崔致遠 저술의 번역 현황 및 과제 (Assignment & Translation Status of Writing of Choi, Chi Won)

초록

孤雲 崔致遠은 신라에서 태어나, 일찍이 중국으로 건너가 文才를 떨친 인물이다. 그의 저술들은 文史哲 연구자들에게 두루 활용가치가 높은 자료이다. 儒･佛･仙 3敎의 사상이 담겨 있을 뿐만 아니라, 당시 국내외적인 사회, 문화, 정치 등과 관련된 가치 있는 정보들이 내포되어 있다. 완성도 높은 문학 작품도 감상할 수 있다. 고대사 관련 자료가 많이 남아있지 않은 상황에서 그의 저술들을 번역하는 작업은 매우 중요한 의미가 있다. 본고에서는 이처럼 가치가 있는 고운의 저술들이 현재까지 어떻게 번역되어 왔는지, 어떤 장단점이 있는지를 검토하여, 향후에 있을 번역 작업의 방향성을 제시해 보고자 한다.
고운은 많은 저술을 남겼다. 생전에 이미 『桂苑筆耕集』20권, 『今體詩』 1권(5수), 『五言七言今體詩』 1권(100수), 『雜詩賦』 1권(30수), 『中山覆簣集』 5권을 스스로 편집하여 나라에 바쳤다. 또한 『三國史記』의 <崔致遠傳> 기록에 의하면 문집 30권이 있었고, 그것이 사라진 뒤 世祖의 어명으로 편찬한 12권의 문집이 있었다. 그러나 이 문집들은 모두 佚失되었고, 1926년에 후손인 崔國述, 崔勉植이 각각 간행한 문집이 현재 세상에 유행하고 있다. 또한 조선 광해군 연간에 鐵面老人이라는 승려가 그의 저술 중에서 高僧의 碑銘 4편을 따로 발췌하여『 四山碑銘』을 편찬하였다. 지금 남아 있는 것은 이들『 桂苑筆耕集』,『 孤雲先生文集』,『 四山碑銘』 뿐이다. 따라서 고운의 저술에 대한 번역 현황 검토는 이 세 종류의 번역서에 한정될 수밖에 없다.『桂苑筆耕集』의 번역은 모두 2차의 성과가 있었다. 1972년 崔濬玉 등이 편역한『國譯 孤雲先生文集』에 포함된『桂苑筆耕集』이 최초의 성과물이다. 다음으로 금년에 한국고전번역원에서 李相鉉의 번역으로 독립적인 번역서가 출간되었다.『孤雲先生文集』의 번역 성과는『桂苑筆耕集』의 경우와 같다. 다만, 崔英成이 1999년에 大東文化硏究院에서 영인한『崔文昌侯全集』을 저본으로 하여『譯註 崔致遠全集』을 간행한 것이 추가된다. 기존 번역서와 다른 점은 <孤雲先生事績>을 제외하고, <孤雲先生續集>이 추가되었다는 것이다.『四山碑銘』은 다른 저술들에 비해 번역서가 많이 출간되었다. 1972년 洪震杓에 의해 처음으로 이루어졌다. 1973 『국역 고운선생문집』이 번역되면서 그 안에 포함되어 있던 사산비명도 자연스레 번역이 되었다. 1987년에 와서 최영성이 전문적으로 연구, 번역한 『註解四山碑銘』을 내놓았다. 그는 3년 뒤 1990년에『최치원의 사상연구』의 부록인 <주해사산비명>에서 일부 오류를 바로 잡았다.
1992년에 韓國古代社會硏究所에서 韓國古代金石文을 譯註하였는데, 사산비명 또한 그 속에 포함되었다. 1993년 李智冠이『校勘譯註 歷代高僧碑文』에서 사산비명을 번역하였다. 1995년에는 李佑成이 문하생들과『新羅四山碑銘』을 번역하여 출간하였다. 1998년에는 다시 최영성이 본인의 기존 번역서를 증보하여『譯註 崔致遠全集』 속에 포함하여 간행하였다. 금년에 간행된 한국고전번역원의『고운집』 속에도 사산비명이 모두 포함되어 있다.
기존 번역서를 검토하면서 내린 결론은 학계연구자와 전문번역자의 작업이 유기적인 관계를 이루지 못하고 있다는 것이다. 기존 성과의 축적이 이루어져서 후속 작업이 이전 작업의 토대 위에서 출발할 수 있지 못하는 비효율적인 구조이다. 학계의 연구자와 전문 번역자가 지닌 각각의 장점을 살리지 못하고 있는 것에서 기인한 것이다.
가장 바람직한 것은 수준 높은 한문 원전 해독 능력을 갖춘 연구자가 학계에서 다년간 관련 분야를 전문적으로 연구한 결과를 바탕으로 번역을 진행하는 것이다. 그러나 이런 조건을 구비하는 것은 현실적으로 어렵다. 학계의 연구자나 전문 번역자가 각자의 분야에서 자신의 특장을 최대한 발휘하는 것이 중요하다. 엄밀하게 선후를 구분해보자면, 연구가 선행되어야 한다. 소논문 분량의 주석 자료가 활발하게 만들어져야 한다.
번역서의 질적 향상을 위해서는 고사 용어의 주석 처리 여부, 적절한 주석량의 산정, 고사나 용어의 출전이 되는 原文의 인용 범위 등에 대한 기준을 명확히 하는 작업도 병행되어야 할 것이다.
현전하는 고운의 저술은 오래된 저작 연대만큼이나 많은 異本이 존재한다. 또한 초기에 간행되었던 원본은 대부분 전래 과정에서 佚失되고, 먼 후대에 이곳저곳에 산재되어 있던 것들을 일부 수습한 것이 전부이다. 당연히 내용상에서도 많은 오류와 착간이 발견되고 있다. 표준 텍스트의 비정이 시급한 실정이다.
번역서가 연구 활동에 미치는 영향은 지대하다. 고전번역원에서 번역한『계원필경집』과『고운문집』을 계기로 고운 저술의 번역은 한층 더 발전할 수 있는 전기가 마련되었다. 향후로도 기존 번역서들의 단점을 지속적으로 보충하여 완정한 번역서가 나오기를 기대해 본다.

영어초록

Gowoon(孤雲) Choi, Chi Won(崔致遠) was born in Shinra(新羅) and he was known for his literary talent after he moved to China. His writings are highly assessed data for 文･史･哲 researchers. It contains philosophy of 儒･佛･仙 3敎 as well as valuable information related to society, culture, and politics in home and foreign at the time. Literary works of high quality can be monitored. The process of translating his works is very meaningful since not so much of data on ancient history remains. In this manuscript, the direction for future translation is to be proposed by reviewing how the writings of Gowoon has been translated and what merits are being held at present.
Gowoon has left many writings. He edited and dedicated many writings to nation such as 20『桂苑筆耕集』, 1『今體詩』(5 pieces), 1『五言七言今體詩』(100 pieces), 1『雜詩賦』(30 pieces), and 5『中山覆簣集』. In addition, according to the record on <崔致遠傳> of『三國史記』, 30 ≪collection of works≫ existed. However, when it disappeared, 12 pieces of collection of works edited in accordance to royal order of Sejo(世祖) existed. Unfortunately all collections of such works have been lost and collections of works issued in 1926 respectively by descendants of 崔國述 and 崔勉植 are in fashion at present. In addition, during the years of Joseon(朝鮮) Gwang-Hae Gun(光海君), a Buddhist monk named 鐵面老人 edited ≪四山碑銘≫ by individually extracting 4 series of 碑銘 of religious dignitary. The only remaining writings are『桂苑筆耕集』,『孤雲先生文集』, and ≪四山碑銘≫. Hence, the translation status review on writings of Gowoon is limited to three kinds of translated version.
The translation of『桂苑筆耕集』 had 2nd outcome in overall. The initial outcome is『桂苑筆耕集』 included in『國譯 孤雲先生文集』 translated by 崔濬玉 and others in 1972. The 2nd outcome is the independently translated version established this year by Institute for Translation of Korean Classics as translation of 李相鉉.
The translation outcome of『孤雲先生文集』 is similar to that of『桂苑筆耕集』. However, 崔英成 issued『譯註 崔致遠全集』 in 1999 by using『崔文昌侯全集』 photoprinted from 大東文化硏究院 as a draft and this has been added. The difference from preexisting translated version is that <孤雲先生事績> has been excluded and <孤雲先生續集> has been added.
Compared to other writings, many translated versions of『四山碑銘』have been established. Initial translation was done by 洪震杓 in 1972. In 1973,『國譯 孤雲先生文集』 was translated and 四山碑銘 which was included in it was also naturally translated. In 1987, Choi, Young Sung issued『註解 四山碑銘』 after performing professional research and translation of it. 3 years later, he corrected partial fallacy of <註解 四山碑銘> which was an appendix of ≪Choi, Chi Won's Philosophy Research≫In 1992,『The Korean Ancient Epigraph』 was translated and annotated by Researching Institute of Korean Ancient Society and 四山碑銘 was included as well. In 1993, 李智冠 translated 四山碑銘 in『校勘譯註 歷代高僧碑文』. In 1995, 李佑成 and disciples translated and issued『新羅四山碑銘』. In 1998, Choi, Young Sung enlarged his preexisting translated version and included it in『譯註 崔致遠全集』for establishment. In this year, 四山碑銘 is also included in『孤雲文集』 issued by Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics.
The conclusion resulted by reviewing preexisting translated versions is that organic relationship isn't formed between the works of researchers of academic world and professional translators. It is an inefficient system that follow-up process cannot be built on top of what has been accumulated as outcome in prior to it. The cause of it is that merits held respectively by researchers of academic world and professional translators aren't sufficiently applied.
The most appropriate way is to process translation based on result of professional research on field experienced by academic world that is researched by the researcher holding high level of capability in decoding the original text of Chinese writing. However, it is difficult to possess such condition in reality. It is important that researcher of academic world and professional translator should optimize their strong points to maximum in their own fields. To precisely distinguish the priority, the research must be preceded. The explanation data should be actively developed in quantity of short thesis.
To enhance the quality of translated version, explanatory management of terms of Gowoon, calculation of appropriate explanation, and process to set accurate standard upon range of citation from original text being source of the term or Gowoon are to be done.
Many different versions for existing writings of ancient history exist along with its age. In addition, most of the original texts issued have disappeared during the course of transmission, and all existing texts are those partially being scattered about from long after. It is obvious that many errors and misunderstandings are being found. The correction on standard text must be made immediately.
The influence of translated version on activity of research is considerable. Based on event of『桂苑筆耕集』 and『孤雲文集』 being translated by Institute for the Translation of Korean Classics, opportunity to develop translation of Gowoon's writings has been set. The weaknesses of preexisting translated versions should be supplemented in future and complete translated version is expected to be issued.
