금관총의 규모와 입지에 관한 고찰 (A Study on the Size and Location of theGold Crown Tomb)

초록

금관총은 일제강점기에 유물수습 수준의 조사가 이뤄진 이후 최근 재발굴 조사를 통해 유구와 유물에 대한 정식 보고서가 출간되면서 무덤에 대한 다양한 정보가 공개되었다. ‘이사지왕’명 대도 편이 새롭게 확인되면서 이를 토대로 무덤의 주인공에 대한 문제에 초점이 맞춰져 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있으나, 쉽게 결론나지 않고 있는 실정이다. 특히, 출토유물 외에 무덤의 규모에 관해서는 재발굴 조사를 통해서도 호석이나 봉토 관련 흔적이 제대로 확인되지 않아 정확한 규모를 확정하기 어려운 상태이다.
본고는 이러한 상황에서 묘광과 적석부의 크기 등을 기준으로 기 조사된 유사한 구조와 규모의 고분을 참조하여 금관총의 봉분 규모를 추정하였다. 구체적으로는 평면 타원형으로 설계되는 적석목곽묘의 봉분설계원리에 따라 봉분의 장･단축 길이와 높이를 추정 복원하였다. 동일한 방식으로 서봉총의 규모도 확인하였는데, 보고된 내용과 달리 서봉총 적석부의 규모는 좀 더 크게 복원해야 함을 지적하였다. 그 결과, 금관총은 장축 48.5m, 단축 43.1m, 높이 12.1m로 장단축 비율 112%의 타원형 봉분으로 복원할 수 있고, 서봉총은 장축 46.7m, 단축 42.2m, 높이 11.6m로 장단축 비율 110%의 타원형 봉분으로 복원하였다. 무덤 규모로만 본다면, 금관총은 경주 중심지 내 적석목곽묘 가운데 70m급의 1그룹(황남대총, 봉황대, 서봉황대)과 50m급의 2그룹(전미추왕릉, 90호, 천마총 등) 아래에 해당하는 40m급의 3그룹에 속하는 것으로 평가할 수 있다.
한편, 금관총이 위치하는 노서･노동동 고분군 일원의 지형을 살펴보면, 북쪽으로는 더 이상 무덤을 조성할 수 없는 습지가 동서방향으로 길게 형성되어 있다. 이에 따라 남쪽에 형성된 독립적인 묘역에는 서봉황대-서봉총-금관총-봉황대가 나란히 입지하고 있음을 확인하였다. 금관총 북쪽에 위치하는 이러한 습지 지형은 묘역과 생활공간을 분리하는 경계 역할을 한다. 또한 습지 내에 식물이 서식했을 당시의 경관을 고려해 보면 고분 주변의 주구와 같은 기능도 한 것으로 추정된다.
이처럼 금관총의 규모와 입지에 관해 새롭게 파악된 내용들은 출토유물 외에도 금관총을 평가할 수 있는 또 다른 자료로서 의미를 가진다.

영어초록

Years after the relics preservation investigation during the Japanese colonial era, the recent rediscovery studies on the Gold Crown Tomb or Geumgwanchong have resulted in a formal report, and a wealth of information was released. Various ongoing studies are conducted based on this, many of which focus on the person buried under Geumgwanchong Tomb, but conducting such studies is not an easy matter. In particular, because the remains, including a stone fence and burial grounds, are not properly identified even after the rediscovery study, it is difficult to determine the exact size of the tomb.
Under such circumstances, this paper has estimated the size of Geumgwanchong with reference to tombs of a similar size that have already been investigated, based on parameters such as the size of the excavation and stone walls. Specifically, the lengths of the major/minor axes and the height of the burial mound were restored according to the principles of burial mound designs of elliptical wooden chamber tombs. Similarly, the size of Seobongchong Tomb was restored. As a result, Geumgwanchong Tomb can be restored as an elliptical burial mound with a 112% ratio between the major and minor axes, a major axis length of 48.5m, a minor axis length of 43.1m, and a height of 12.1m. Seobongchong Tomb is restored as an elliptical burial mound, with a 110% ratio between the major and minor axes, a major axis length of 46.7m, a minor axis length of 42.2m, and a height of 11.6m. In terms of the size of the tombs, Geumgwanchong Tomb can be categorized in Group 3 among the wooden chamber tombs of Gyeongju City, a 40m-class group that is below the 70m-class Group 1 (Hwangnam Daechong, Bonghwangdae, Seo-Bonghwangdae) and the 50m-class Group 2 (including JeonmiChuwang Tomb, Number 90, Cheonmachong).
Meanwhile, an examination of the geological features of ancient tombs in the towns of Noseo and Nodong, where Geumgwanchong is located, shows that wetlands not suitable for the construction of graves formed along the eastern and western directions. Accordingly, it was confirmed that Seo- Bongwhangdae, Seobongchong, Geumwangchong, and Bongwhadae are located side by side in independent burial grounds. The natural wetlands north of Geumgwanchong act as a boundary that separates burial grounds and residential areas. Also, it could have functioned as a drainage around the ancient tombs, considering the environment of the time period when vegetables were grown in the wetlands.
Hence, the newly unearthed information on the size and location of Geumgwanchon Tomb is significant as additional data for evaluating Geumgwanchon Tomb in addition to the exhumed relics.
