출애굽의 기억공동체와 5･18 기억공동체 (The Remembering Community of the Exodus and Another Remembering Community of the 5·18 People’s Uprising)

초록

본고의 목적은 출애굽 공동체가 출애굽 사건을 어떻게 진술하고, 기억하며 전유하였는지를 살펴봄으로써 5·18 공동체의 체험을 현재화 하는 데 필요한 지혜와 영감을 얻는 것이다. 이 목적을 위하여 먼저 출애굽 사건과 그 사건의 진술 방식을 검토하고, 그것에 대한 고찰을 바탕으로 5·18 공동체의 체험을 현재화하기 위한 방안을 모색해 볼 것이다.
출애굽 기억공동체란 출애굽 사건을 진술한 설화적 주체를 말하며, 탈출기 1-24장의 형태로 그 체험을 전달해 준 ‘기억공동체’를 말한다. 우리는 다음 질문을 토대로 설화적･신학적 방법으로 이 기억공동체가 전승을 전달한 방식에 접근한다. ① 출애굽 공동체의 구성원은 누구이며, 이들이 겪었던 억압과 착취의 경험은 어떤 것인가? ② 그들은 이 체험에 어떻게 대응하였는가? ③ 그들은 해방을 어떻게 이해하는가? 그들이 목표로 하는 해방이란 무엇인가? ④ 그들의 해방 체험은 어떤 과정을 거쳤는가? ⑤ 이스라엘 백성은 그들의 해방 체험을 어떻게 지속적으로 현재화 하였는가? 출애굽의 기억공동체는 이스라엘이 이집트로부터 구원된 사건은 전적으로 하느님이 주도하셨고 하느님이 시작하신 일임을 강조한다. 그래서 해방 체험과 관련하여 이 기억공동체는 어떤 영웅도 제시하지 않는다. 그들에게 해방의 목표는 단지 억압에서 벗어나는 것이 아니라 참된 힘의 주인이신 하느님을 예배하는 공동체가 되어 약속의 땅으로 들어가는 것이다. 그들은 또한 광야 여정에 대한 이야기를 통하여 해방이 내외적 억압의 구조를 벗어나기 위한 일련의 과정이요, 지속적인 자기 절제와 훈련이 필요한 일임을 분명히 한다. 이스라엘은 시나이 계약을 통하여 하느님의 계약 상대자가 됨으로써 비로소 진정한 자유의 길로 들어서게 되었다. 이 계약의 조건으로 주어진 십계명과 계약법전은 하느님을 예배하는 계약의 공동체가 그 결속을 유지하기 위하여 필요한 것이 무엇인지를 제시한다. 출애굽의 기억공동체는 출애굽 체험이 현재 진행형으로 지속될 수 있도록, 체험에 대한 지속적인 나눔과 전례 의식을 통한 기억, 교육, 그 체험에 바탕을 둔 윤리적, 도덕적 정체성의 확립과 그것을 실천하기 위한 법과 규칙의 제정 등과 같은 기억 장치들을 마련하였다. 출애굽 기억공동체의 이런 노력은 5·18 기억공동체가 5·18 체험을 어떻게 기억하고, 어떻게 현재화해야 하는지 모색하는 현시점에서 적절한 방향을 제시해 준다고 본다.

영어초록

This article aims to find an inspiration and wisdom from the Exodus story and its remembering community to contextualize the experiences of the 5·18 People’s Uprising. For this purpose, a careful attention is to be paid to the ways in which the remembering community of the Exodus narrates, remembers and appropriates their Exodus events. The Exodus events is defined here as a series of acts that happened when the Israelites were liberated from their slavery in Egypt, and went through the wilderness journey to reach Mount Sinai where they made a covenant with God, as narrated in Chapters 12-24 of the book of Exodus. The remembering community of the Exodus is the subject who narrated these experiences and transmitted them to us in the present form of Exod 1-24. Narratological and theological approaches are to be applied to the text of the Exodus 12-24. The following five questions play a key role to find narratological strategies that the remembering community employed in their recounting the Exodus events: ① Who were the members of the Exodus community? Why did they experience oppressions and exploitations in Egypt? ② How did they react to such horrible experiences? ③ What kind of liberation did they dream about? What did they understand about liberation? ④ How did they experience their liberation from the oppression in Egypt? ⑤ What sorts of efforts did they make in order to contextualize their experiences of liberation continuiously? The remembering community of the Exodus put an emphasis on the fact that their liberation from violence and oppression in Egypt has been initiated and led only by God. The community does not show up any hero in regard to their liberation experiences. Their goal for liberation is not only to be released from the oppression that they experienced but also to enter into the Promised Land as a community of worshipping God who is the author of the true power. The remembering community also narrates their liberation experiences as a process of being freed from their innate structure of oppression as well as from the oppression from the outside. This process requires persistent self-discipline and efforts to overcome the oppressive structure. The Israelites, by making the covenant with God at Mt. Sinai, became a covenantal partner with God and entered on the path towards true freedom. The Ten Commandments and the Covenant Code, given to them as the conditions of the covenant relationship with God, indicate the ways in which they build a covenantal community and keep solid bonds among them and with God. The remembering community of the Exodus instituted a practical and a conducive apparatuses to commemorate the Exodus events, such as liturgy, annual recitation of credo which retells the Exodus experiences, education through generations, laws and regulations which demand remembering the events, and the like. This effort to remember their experiences through generations helped them to form moral ethos which extends their hands willingly to the oppressed and prevents them from being the oppressor. Such efforts that the Exodus community made to remember the event certainly give an inspiration and helpful guide to another remembering community of the 5·18 People’s Uprising when they now try to form their memories and contextualize their experiences.
