드라마에 재현된 다문화 수용성과 상호문화 소통 양상 연구 — 「쌉니다 천리마마트」를 중심으로 (The Study on Aspects of Multicultural Acceptance and Intercultural Communication Reproduced in Drama — Focusing on “the Pegasus Mart”)

초록

본 연구는 「쌉니다 천리마마트」에 재현된 다문화 수용성과 상호문화 소통 양상을 문화 연구의 관점에서 비판적으로 분석하고 평가하여 다문화 국가 한국이 현실과 미디어 재현에서 나아가야 할 바람직한 방향을 모색해 보고자 하였다.
첫째 이 드라마는 한국 사회의 다문화 수용성에 대한 비판을 드러내고 있다. 외국인이나 이주민을 부수적인 존재로 객체화한 동시대 드라마들과는 달리, 외국인 노동자 빠야족을 주체적인 존재로 형상화하고 다른 구성원들과 의미 있게 소통하는 사회구성원으로 재현하고 있다. 또한 천리마마트 공동체 구성원들의 태도 변화에서 볼 수 있듯 다문화 수용성을 제고하기 위해다문화 수용성을 저해하는 한국 중심, 서구 중심 세계화에 대한 문제 제기를 보여준다. 세계화는 미국화, 서구화라는 고정관념을 벗어나 진정한 세계화의 실천으로 다양한 외국식 이름이나 이슬람과의 교류, 한국과 미국 문화가 상호소통하는 새로운 핼러윈 축제를 예시로 보여주며, 시청자들의 인식 개선에 도움을 주고 있다.
둘째 이 드라마는 다양한 문화의 단순한 공존을 넘어 상호문화 소통을 모색하고 있다. 다문화사회 다양성의 원천은 민족이나 인종으로만 한정되지 않고 폭넓게 파악할 수 있다. 이 드라마에서는 주류 사회에서 실패하고 배제된 다양한 문화 배경을 가진 천리마마트 직원들의 연대와 성장을 마살라 영화와 유사한 뮤지컬 형식의 춤과 노래의 삽입을 통해 효과적으로 표현하고 있다. 한편 가족 같은 공동체 천리마마트의 성공은 지속가능한 발전을 이끄는 상생의 경영이라는 더 큰 사회의 차원으로 확대된다. 주류 사회인 대마그룹에 손해를 끼치기 위한 방법은 역설적이게도 정과 따뜻함의 공동체 문화가 담긴 사람을 위한 경영으로 이끈다. 등장인물의 의도와 결과가 일치하지 않는 아이러니한 상황을 통해 시청자들은 웃음과 함께 사회비판적인 통찰을 얻을 수 있다.
외국인이나 이주민과의 밀도 있는 직접 접촉 빈도가 낮은 한국 상황에서 드라마 「쌉니다 천리마마트」는 현실의 다문화 수용성과 상호문화 소통의 한계를 비판적으로 보여주는 한편 현실에서 모색할 수 있는 구체적인 사례를 제시해 준다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 갖는다. 드라마를 통해 살펴본 것처럼 다양한 다문화 구성원들이 지속적으로 서로를 깊이 있게 이해하고 소통하며 다문화 수용성이나 상호문화 소통 능력을 위한 인식과 태도가 변화하는 것이 중요한 만큼, 직접 만날 수 있는 소통의 장과 인식 개선 교육 등이 지원되어야 할 것이다. 또한 미디어의 재현이 다문화 인식에 큰 영향을 미치는 만큼 드라마 제작 시 관련 제작 가이드라인이나 심의 규정을 준수해야 할 것이다. 드라마 관계자인 드라마 제작자, 한국인 시청자, 외국인과 이주민 시청자, 드라마 심의기구의 인식 개선과 의미 있는 소통도 필요하다. 특히 「쌉니다 천리마마트」에서 한계로 지적된 외국인 재현의 차별적 요소와 희화화의 문제는 적극적인 개선이 필요하다. 방송 관계자 대상 다문화 인식 개선 교육, 방송심의 과정에서 외국인이나 이주민 당사자의 의견 반영, 외국인이나 이주민 연기자의 발굴과 드라마 참여 확대 등이 요청된다.

This study critically analyzes and evaluates aspects of multicultural acceptance and intercultural communication reproduced in “the Pegasus Mart” from the perspective of cultural studies to find a desirable direction for Korea, a multicultural country, to move forward in reality and media reproduction.
First, the drama “the Pegasus Mart” reveals a critique of the multicultural acceptance of Korean society. Unlike typical dramas that relegate immigrants to marginalized roles, this depiction presents the foreign worker Paya as an autonomous member of society, engaging in meaningful interactions with fellow members. This drama raises inquiries about the concept of globalization centered on Korea and the West. It exemplifies this through a novel Halloween festival, where diverse foreign names, interactions involving Islam, and a blend of Korean and American cultures converge, serving as an embodiment of genuine globalization.
Secondly, this drama aims to foster meaningful cross-cultural communication that goes beyond the mere coexistence of diverse cultures. The wellspring of diversity within a multicultural society extends beyond ethnicity or race to encompass a broader spectrum. Through its narrative, the drama underscores the solidarity and development of the Pegasus Mart’s employees representing a range of cultural origins, individuals who have faced setbacks and exclusion within mainstream society. Moreover, it introduces the concept of co-prosperity, win-win management, a strategy conducive to sustainable progress.
As seen through this drama, it is necessary for members of various cultures to continuously understand each other, communicate deeply, and change their perceptions and attitudes toward multicultural acceptance. Opportunities to communicate directly with each other and awareness-raising training should be supported for this. Furthermore, strict adherence to the relevant production guidelines and screening regulations should be considered as a top priority in the drama production process. Efforts to promote multicultural awareness and meaningful communication between drama creators, domestic viewers, foreign and migrant viewers, and the Korea Communications Standards Commission are equally important. Particularly noteworthy is the urgent need for active measures to solve the limitations of “the Pegasus Mart”, that is, the problem of discriminatory expression and intentional ridicule against foreigners. This means raising multicultural awareness in the broadcasting industry, reflecting the perspectives of foreigners and migrants in the broadcast screening process, discovering foreign and migrant actors, and providing opportunities to participate.
