시경･서경의 인격적 천관(天觀) 연구 (The Study on the Personal Characteristic of T’ien(天) in The Book of Poetry(詩經) and The Book of Documents(書經))

초록

유교의 기본 경전인 오경(五經) 중에서도 시경･서경에는 천(天)에 대한 고대 중국인들의 관념을 알 수 있는 내용들이 풍부하게 담겨 있다. 시경과 서경에 나타나는 천(天)의 인격적 특성에 대해 살펴보는 것이 본고의 목적이다. 유교에서 절대자를 지칭하는 대표적 호칭은 ‘천’과 ‘상제’이다. 그래서 본고는 시경･서경에 나타난 천･상제의 성격을 일곱 가지 측면에서 살펴보고자 한다.
① 천은 최고신이고, 공경과 제사의 대상이다. 유교 경전에서 천은 유일무이한 최고신이지만 또한 수많은 신들을 거느린 천상의 임금으로, 천에 대한 인간의 자세는 경천(敬天)･외천(畏天)･봉천(奉天)･사천(事天)･제천(祭天) 등으로 표현되었다. ② 천은 조물주이고, 만물의 존재 근원이다. 그래서 인간은 천이 부여한 법칙이나 질서에 따라 삶을 영위해 나가야만 된다고 믿었다. ③ 천은 의지와 감정을 지닌 영명한 존재이다. 천의 인격적 특성은 그의 호의･분노･연민과 같은 감정의 표현과, 전지(全知)한 속성을 통해서 드러난다. ④ 천은 천명(天命)을 내리고 거두는 절대자이다. 나라의 건국, 군주의 임명, 도읍의 건설, 전쟁, 혼인, 수명, 길흉 모든 것이 천명에 의해 이루어진다고 믿었다. ⑤ 천은 상선벌악의 주재신(主宰神)이다. 천･상제의 권능은 자연현상과 인생만사를 주재하는 것으로 나타나는데, 무엇보다도 천은 인간의 선악에 따라 상벌을 내리는 존재로 신앙되었다. ⑥ 천은 기도･탄원･신앙의 대상이다. 『시경』 곳곳에는 긍휼히 여겨달라고 하늘의 이름을 부르며 호소하거나, 슬픔을 토로하는 등의 탄원 시편들이 보인다. ⑦ 천은 도덕･가치의 근원자이다. 천은 또한 내재적이고 도덕적인 존재로서, 인간의 본성이 선한 근거는 바로 천으로부터 그것을 부여받은 데서 확보될 수 있다.
이상 살펴본 천의 속성들은 모두 그 ‘인격성’을 드러낸다. 명말청초(明末淸初)에 중국에 온 예수회 선교사들은 유교 경전을 깊이 연구하던 중에, 시경･서경 등의 경전에 나타나는 인격신 신앙에 주목하였다. 유교 경전의 천 사상에 대한 그들의 새로운 인식은 그들의 적응주의적 선교방법, 곧 보유론(補儒論)의 바탕이 되었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this study is to examine the personal characteristic of T’ien as found in the two books among The Five Classics of Confucian scriptures, namely The Book of Poetry(詩經) and The Book of Documents(書經). In Confucianism the absolute being is expressed as T’ien and Shing-ti(Emperor Above). In Korean ‘T’ien’ means ‘Heaven’ and ‘Shing-ti’ means ‘God’. The characteristic of T’ien and Shing-ti in The Book of Poetry and The Book of Documents have been examined under the following seven aspects.
T’ien is the supreme God subject to reverence and rite. In Confucian scriptures T’ien is the supreme God and also is the heavenly King who commands other gods. Human attitudes toward T’ien are expressed by reverence, fear, worship.
T’ien is the creator and the source of all material being. Because it is thought that the life of Human’s was derived from T’ien, it is believed that one needs to follow the law and order set by T’ien.
T’ien is a spiritual being with will and emotion. T’ien’s personal characteristic is revealed in his emotion(kindness, anger, sympathy) and property(all knowing).
T’ien is an absolute being that commands with his will(T’ien-ming, will of T’ien). It is believed that the establishment of a nation and city, appointment of a king, war, divorce are due to the T’ien-ming(will of T’ien).
T’ien rewards good and punishes evil. T’ien and Shing-ti’s power preside over nature and life. Since T’ien is a being who rewards good and punishes evil, one needs to be faithful to him.
T’ien is a being subject to prayer, petition and faith. In the Book of Documents there are passages where one calls to heaven for mercy and petition poems expressing sorrow.
T’ien is the source of moral values. T’ien is also a immanent and moral being in whom the goodness of human nature is rooted.
The above attributes reveal the ‘personality’ of T’ien. In the late Ming and early Qing dynasty the missionaries of the Jesuit Order who came to China studied Confucius scriptures and payed attention to The Book of Poetry and The Book of Documents where one can find faith in a personal God. The awareness of the idea of T’ien as found in Confucius scriptures became the foundation of the Jesuit’s adaptionism and theory compliments confucianism. Thus, the Jesuits were able to present God in more familiar way to the Chinese through the concept of T’ien and Shing-ti as found in confucius scriptures.
