In A.D 661, the Tang Dynasty invaded the Goguryeo Kingdom. In the massive campaign, Tang used a strategy of direct attack targeting Goguryeo’s capital, Pyeongyang. Therefore, Tang army marched eastward leaving Goguryeo’s forts with strategic significance unattacked while its naval forces sailed against Daedong River to directly hit Pyeongyang Fortress. Tang naval forces under the direction of admirals Su Dingfang and Pang Xiaotai succeeded to place Pyeongyang Fortress under siege. But Yeongaesomun of Goguryeo installed the commanding center at Daeseong Mountain Fortress which was more suitable for a long term battles and operated a dualistic capital defense system to efficiently manage the resistance against Tang. Due to the lack of proper communication with the Silla Kingdom, military aid from Silla for the campaign was passive. In this situation, th unexpected riot of Tiele had Tang to withdraw its army who had already broken through Daedong River.


Tang, in need of securing the safe withdrawal of its army, had to have naval forces to continue attacking on Pyeongyang Fortress and require Silla to dispatch quartermaster corps instead of combat units. However, Goguryeo withered Tang’s navy with a strong resistance and thus Tang soldiers were demoralized under the harsh winer and hunger. While Su Dingfang’s forces attacking Pyeongyang Fortress from all sides, Pang Xiaotai’s unit stationed at the bank of Hapcheon River to disconnect the link between Fortresses of Pyeongyang and to hold Yeongaesomun in check. Yeongaesomun, with a profound understanding on the progress of a battle, heard the news of Silla support unit’s approach and ordered to attack Pang Xiaotai’s forces. The demoralized and tired soldiers of Pang Xiaotai could not even lunch a counterattack and experienced a total defeat. The remaining naval forces of Tang was forced to withdraw without any results of its efforts.
