초록

4차 산업의 과학기술과 디지털화는 인공지능⋅로봇공학⋅사물인터넷⋅자율주행차량⋅3D프린팅⋅나노기술⋅생명공학⋅재료공학⋅에너지 저장기술⋅양자 컴퓨팅 등의 다양한 영역으로 확대되어 우리의 삶을 완전히 바꿀 기세이다. 이러한 과학기술의 발전과 디지털화는 세계 경제 전반에 영향을 미치면서 인류의 염원인 경제적 풍요를 이룰 수 있다는 낙관적 전망이 지배적이기 까지 하다. 이런 분위기에 편승하여 4차 산업 혁명을 주도하는 일련의 그룹들은 과거의 농업혁명이나 17세기의 산업혁명은 부분적인 변화나 혁신을 추동한데 반해 4차 산업 혁명은 말 그대로 모든 것을 바꿀 것이라고 자신하면서 동시에 4차 산업 혁명의 결과 오히려 빈부격차나 인간소외와 같은 기존의 제반 모순이 더욱 악화될 것이라는 일각의 우려에 대해 ‘이번은 다르다.’(This time is different)고 확신한다. 하지만 4차 산업 혁명이 종전의 혁명과 과연 다 른지 어떤지를 우리는 이 시점에서 다시 묻지 않을 수 없다.
4차 산업 혁명뿐만 아니라 모든 혁명은 문명의 소산이다. 자연과 대비되는 인간의 문명은 근본적으로 두 가지 논리를 지니고 있다. 하나는 최소비용에 최대효과 즉 저비용 고효율을 지향하는 ‘효율성의 논리’와 경쟁력 있는 것은 유용한 것이고 경쟁력 없는 것은 무용한 것이라고 하는 ‘경쟁의 논리’이다. 이러한 두 원리는 근현대 자본주의 사회가 도래하면서 극도로 관철되고 있다. 특히 4차 산업혁명은 효율성을 극대화하는 방향으로 나아가고 경쟁을 궁극에 까지 몰아가고 있다. 결국 우리의 물질적 삶의 편리함과 안락함을 가져오는 4차 산업혁명을 주도하는 기술인 사물인터넷⋅빅데이터⋅자율주행자동차⋅인공지능⋅로봇 등은 효율성의 논리와 경쟁의 논리로 무장하여 편리하고 편안하며 그리고 물질적으로 안락하고 풍요로운 삶을 가져다 줄 것이라는 장밋빛 전망을 피력하지만, 4차 산업혁명 이전의 혁명들이 노정(露呈)한 인간 소외와 빈부의 격차로 인한 빈익빈 부익부의 양극화 현상은 전혀 개선되지 않은 채로 오히려 4차 산업혁명에서는 그 모순들이 더욱 증폭될 수 있다는 어두운 전망도 동시에 나오고 있다.
이러한 시대적 상황에서 4차 산업 기술들이 지향하는 편리하고 편안한 효율적 삶과 물질적으로 안락하고 풍요로운 삶 그 자체가 과연 진정 행복한 삶 인가를 끊임없이 묻는 것, 그리고 그 기술을 만들어 사용하거나 이용하는 주체인 우리 자신의 본래면목을 되돌아보게 하는 것, 아울러 묻지 않고 되돌아 보지 않으면 기술에 예속되어 무기력한 노예상태로 전락하리라는 것을 자각케 하는 것이 바로 불교의 역할인 것이다.

영어초록

The science and technology and digitalization of the 4th industry are becoming expanded into various areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, Internet of Things, autonomous vehicles, 3D printing, nanotechnology, biotechnology, materials engineering, and energy storage technology, It is a moment toward a complete change. The development and digitization of such technology is dominant, with optimistic prospects that it can bring the unprecedented economic prosperity of humanity, which will affect the whole world economy. A series of groups have led the fourth industrial revolution to such an ambience, confident that the past agricultural revolution or the industrial revolution of the 17th century led to partial change or innovation, while the fourth industrial revolution would literally change everything. They appear to be convinced that this time is different as to the concern that some of the existing contradictions such as the gap between the rich and the poor and the human alienation will become worse as a result of the Fourth Industrial Revolution. But at this point we can not help asking whether the fourth industrial revolution is different from the previous revolution.
Not only the Fourth Industrial Revolution but all the revolutions are the products of civilization. Human civilization, in contrast to nature, has two fundamentals. One is the logic of efficiency, which aims at low cost and high efficiency, and the logic of competition, which claims that competitiveness is useful while no competitiveness is useless. These two principles have been extensively pursued with the advent of modern and capitalist societies. In particular, the Fourth Industrial Revolution is moving toward maximizing efficiency and raising competition to the ultimate. After all, the technology that leads the fourth industrial revolution, bringing convenience and comfort of our physical life, such as Internet, Big Data, autonomous driving automobile, artificial intelligence, and robotics, is armed with the logic of efficiency and competition, But we are now facing the polarization of the rich and the poor in addition to the human alienation, while the gap between the rich and the poor since the pre-industrial revolution has not been improved at all. At the same time, there is a dark prediction that the contradictions can be further amplified in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
In such a situation, it is essential that, facing the convenient, comfortable, and efficient life and the materially comfortable and affluent life that are pursued by the 4th industrial technology, we constantly ask whether it is truly a happy life, and whether it maintains our own original and sound state. It is the role of Buddhism that makes people realize that if they do not question anything and look back at themselves profoundly, they might be subordinated to technology and become helpless slaves.
