최미나 소설 연구 - 첫 소설집 『합류』를 중심으로 (A Study of Choi Mina’s Novel - On Choi Mina’s First Novel Confluence)

초록

이 글은 50년대 후반 등단하여 80년대까지 지속적인 활동을 한 여성 작가 최미나 소설에 대한 연구이다. 최미나는 문학사에서 별로 주목받지 못했다. 따라서 첫 소설집 『합류』에 주목함으로써, 50.60년대 문학적 특징을 확인하고 여성문학사에서 작가군에 올릴 수 있는 가능성을 타진한다.
문학사에서 50년대는 역사의 수난과 가치체계의 변화를 포착하는 특성을 지닌다. 「만학선생」과 「전족」은 가치체계의 전환을 나타내는 지점인 한말과 일제, 해방공간과 전쟁 그리고 60년대를 여는 근대사의 지도를 보여준다. 특히 가치체계의 변화를 언어와 계층 변화로 읽어내는 점은 눈여겨 볼 만한데 이를 통해 시대의 격동을, 서민들의 삶을 조망한다.
50년대 후반부터 60년대 초반까지의 한국은 산업혁명화를 실현하기 위한 준비의 기간이었다. 작가는 노동시장에 내몰린 여성들에 주목하여 순탄치 않은 입상과정을 포착해냄으로써, 당대 여성성의 층위와 함께 여성에 대한 사회적 인식을 담아낸다. 「그림자」, 「등반」, 「고갯길」, 「반전」의 여성들은 자본의 폭력성과 남성들의 왜곡된 시선이 주는 교란 작용을 이겨내고자 하는 서사 속에서 정체성과 존재감을 자각한다. 따라서 한국 경제 정책의 전환점이 사회구성원들의 가치체제의 변화를 이끈 것처럼, 50년대에서 60년대로 넘어가는 길목에서 여성성도 생존에의 위기의식에서 벗어나 확고한 입상을 세워나가는 전환점에 서 있다.
「고독의 성곽」, 「합류」, 「불협화음」, 『결론 없는 종장』은 정신적 혹은 육체적으로 훼손된 여성들이 포괄적으로 낭만적 사랑의 범주에서 삶의 위로를 찾는다. 낭만적 사랑은 모든 제도와 윤리로부터 벗어나고픈 욕망이자, 상처받은 심신을 위로받고자 하는 치유의 성격을 갖는다. 결국 가족제도 안에서 해답을 찾을 수 없었던 여성들의 자기 찾기라는 의미를 지닌다.
역사의 수난과 가치체계의 변화를 포착하고 당대 여성성의 층위와 함께 여성에 대한 사회적 인식을 담아낼 뿐만 아니라 전환기에 나타날 수 있는 구성원들의 성향을 읽어낸 것은 민족의 운명과 사회 변화에 관심을 게을리 하지 않았던 작가의식에 기인한다. 따라서 『합류』는 50ㆍ60년대 여성문학적 특징을 짚어낼 수 있으면서 동시에 최미나를 여성작가군에서 주목해야 하는 이유 또한 제공한다.

This study is on the novel of Choi Mina, who made her literary debut as a novelist in the late 1950’s and continued to work till the 1980’s. It is said that she was not prominent in the history of Korean literature. However, focusing on her first novel Confluence, this study investigates Korean literary characteristics in the 1950’s and the 1960’s, and aims to show the possibility of putting her on the list of outstanding Korean female writers.
The Korean literature of the 1950’s had the characteristic of describing the changes of a historical ordeal and its value system. Especially her two novels A Man Who Became a Teacher in His Later Years and Foot-binding are noticeable because the two works deal with three generations of the historial ordeal. She described the end of Korea, Japanese colonial era, liberation, war and the modern history of the 1960’s. Such description represents the change of social value system. Regarding the change of the value system as the change of language and social class, she wrote the Korean historical ordeal.
The time of the late 1950’s to the early 1960’s in Korea was the preparation time for Koreans to realize its industrial revolution. By focusing on female workers, who was forced to work in the labor market, and capturing their rough life, she dealt with the social recognition towards female, as well as their social standing at that time. The female characters from her works like Shadow, Climbing, Mountain Pass, and Reverse, realized their own identity and their sense of presence in the conflict with their economical role and sexual sensation. Their intricate mental state resulted from overcoming the capital strength and male’s distorted thought. As the time of the late 1950’s to the early 1960’s in Korea was the turning point of femininity which got out of a survival crisis and showed its firm standing. It’s as if the turning point of Korean economic policy led to the change of the value system of social constituent members.
Choi Mina’s novels, A Castle of Solitude, Confluence, The Closing with Conclusion, are about the stories that mentally and physically damaged females generally found their life comfort in the category of romantic love. So their romantic love was a desire to escape from all the systems and morality, and had a characteristic of healing their injured mind and body. Finally, female characters, who couldn’t get a good answer in their family, left to find out their identity.
Choi Mina captured Korean historical ordeal and the change of its value system at that time, and showed the public recognition towards female along with the concept of femininity. Actually she had a great interest in the national destiny and the social change along with a strong consciousness. In this respect, her novel Confluence enables us to see her authorial spirit, and makes us think of her as one of outstanding Korean female writers.
