장녀 됨에 관한 자문화교육기술지: 모녀의 일기를 중심으로 (Autoeducography on being the First Daughter: Centered on the Dairies of a Mother and a Daughter)

초록

이 연구는 연구자 자신의 장녀 됨에 단초가 된 담론과 이데올로기를 파악함으로써 여성이 성차별에 크게 노출되는 관계가 가족 내부임을 드러내었다. 그리고 성차별을 그대로 답습하는 문화화 “된” 나가 아닌 기존의 체제에 대한 반성 속에서 문화화 “하는” 나를 교육적으로 재구성하고자 한 자문화교육기술지(auto educo-graphy)이다. 이 연구에서 나는 장녀 됨을 강조하는 문화적 틀에 거리 두기를 하는 것이 아닌, 자기분석을 통해 선지식과 선경험을 깊이 있게 직관함으로써 문화적 억압으로부터 자유로워질 수 있었다. 즉, 장녀 됨에 대한 의식을 확장하여 세계를 이전과는 다르게 지각하는 힘은 문화가 아닌 나에게 있었다.
이 연구는 연구자의 체험을 드러낼 수 있는 방법으로 일기라는 자전적 자료를 활용했다. 일기 자료는 엄마의 육아일기, 연구자의 6년간의 일기, 엄마의 편지식 일기의 세 유형을 활용해 엄마가 첫 자녀로써 딸을 가지게 된 순간의 기록부터 남동생이 태어난 후로의 8년 후까지의 과정을 연행적으로 기술했다. 연구 결과 장녀 됨의 체험은 예비 누나(“동생은 꼭 남동생”), 일등 자식(“엄마 저만 믿으세요”), 작은 엄마(“은지의 육아일기”), 딸이니까(“항상 아들인 제홍이”)로 주제화되었다. 그리고 이 과정에서 장녀 됨을 성찰하는 과정은 ‘순응: “장녀”라는 호명과의 동일시’, ‘저항: 길들여짐에 대한 내면적 불편함’, ‘물음: 진정한 나 자신이 되려면?’으로 이어졌다. 이 연구는 엄마의 삶에 영향을 미친 가족 이데올로기가 딸(여성)의 장녀 됨을 재생산하고 있으며, 고정된 남성·여성 이미지가 아들(남성)에게까지 폭력으로 다가옴을 드러냈다. 그리고 이를 통해 성차별이 인간 차별로 이어질 수 있음을 논의하였다.

영어초록

This study revealed that it is in a family relationship where women are heavily exposed to gender discrimination by identifying the discourses and ideologies that served as the foundation for the writer being the first daughter. And it is an autoeducography which was intended to restructure myself who “enculturates” by reflecting on the existing system, not myself who “is enculturated” by simply following the practice of gender discrimination. The writer became free from cultural oppression through self-reflection of deeply intuitive preconceptions and experiences, not by distancing oneself from the cultural framework that emphasizes the status of being the eldest daughter. In other words, the power to perceive the world differently by extending the consciousness of being the eldest daughter is found within oneself, not in the culture. This study utilized the autobiographical data of diary as a way to expose the writer’s own experiences. The diary is a chronological depiction of the events between mother’s conception of the daughter as first child and eight years after the birth of younger brother. It is a collection of records from the baby book, the writer’s diary for six years and mother’s diary in letter format. Through this research, the experience of being the eldest daughter was topicalized under the following headings: Preparing to be the older sister (“Younger one has to be a brother”); Best child (“You can count on me mother”); Second mother (“Eun-ji’s baby book”); and Because you are a daughter (“Jae-hong is always the son”). The reflection on being the eldest daughter then continued under: ‘Conformity: equate to the title as the eldest daughter’; ‘Resistance: inner discomfort towards conformity’; and ‘Questioning: how to be myself’. This study shows that the family ideology that affected the mother’s life then continues to reproduce the image for the eldest daughter in the daughter’s (female) life. It is also revealed that fixed imagery of men and women also confronts the son (male) as a form of violence. Moreover, it was argued that gender discrimination then could also lead to discrimination of humans in broader sense.
