카페의 식민지근대, 식민지근대의 카페: 재조일본인 사회, 카페/여급, 경성 (Colonial Modernity of Cafe in Korea Under Japanese Rule: Japanese Settler Society and Cafe/Waitress in Seoul)

초록

본 논문은 일제강점기 재조일본인 사회와 카페/여급에 관한 연구이다. 식민지조선의카페와 카페여급에 관하여 그동안 여성학, 문학, 역사학 등의 분야에서 많은 논의가 있어 왔다. 본 연구는 기존의 논의에서 아직 다루어지지 않은 문제, 즉, 재조일본인 사회가바라본 식민지 조선의 카페와 카페여급에 관하여 논하고자 한다. 이를 위해서 재조일본인 사회의 대표적인 종합잡지라고 할 수 있는 『조선공론(朝鮮公論)』(1913-1944)에 나타난 카페, 카페여급, 그리고 카페가 위치하였던 경성의 도시공간에 관한 기사를 분석한다. 특별히 본 논문은 카페와 카페가 위치한 도시공간의 ‘혼혈성’, ‘혼종성’을 중심으로논의를 진행한다. 카페는 서구의 산물이지만, 일본을 거쳐 식민지조선에 들어오면서 카페여급이 서비스를 제공하는 혼성적 성격을 가지게 되었다. 1920년대 일본인 거류지인경성의 남촌(본정)을 중심으로 카페영업이 활발하였으나 1926년 총독부 광화문 이전과함께 종로가 개발됨에 따라 북촌에도 대형카페가 들어서게 된다. 본 논문은 재조일본인사회의 재력가와 실업자들의 북촌진출과 그들이 어떠한 방식으로 근대의 총아이자 자본주의 소비사회의 핵심적 장소로 부상한 카페를 개발, 운영하는지를 보여준다. 카페는 근대의 유흥공간으로서 식민자와 피식민자의 명확한 경계를 그려내기 힘든 식민지의 혼혈적 공간이었음을 밝히고, 이것이 여성주의 역사연구에 가지는 함의를 짚어보고자 한다.

영어초록

This paper examines Japanese settler society, cafe, and cafe waitress in colonial Seoul under Japanese rule (1910-1945). Over the last two decades, scholars in various disciplines including women’s and gender studies, literature, and history have probed the evolution of cafe and the rise of cafe waitress as a new profession in colonial Korea. This study explores these issues from a different perspective, which takes seriously how Japanese settler society viewed colonial cafe and cafe waitress. It does so by focusing on Chōsen Korōn (Korea Review, 1913-1944), colonial monthly magazine published by Japanese settler society. Along with its coverage on cafe and cafe waitress, this paper interrogates the development of urban spaces of both namchŏn(South Village) and bukchŏn(North Village) in colonial Seoul, and seeks to recontextualize the modern cafe and cafe waitress, especially in bukchŏn as emblematic of the capitalist work of Japanese settler society. In particular, this paper utilizes notions of “cultural hybridity” and “mixed-bloodedness” of cafe in the transformaing urban space of bukchŏn. In colonial Korea and Seoul, cafe was built as a cultural hybrid that mixed the Western forms of architecture and its interior with the Japanese appropriation of Western culture which had the young cafe waitress serving the male customer. It has been typically believed that colonial cafe was first built in the lucrative commercial area of namchŏn under heavy control of Japanese settler society and later on spread out to bukchŏn known as the main business district of Koreans. This study showcases how aggressively profit-minded Japanese businessmen developed colonial Seoul and bukchŏn, building cafe chains in Chŏngro of North Village to expand their market into the Korean communities. This essay demonstrates how these Japanese businessmen established and operated modern cafe as the visible symbol of modernity, capitalism, and civilization. Colonial cafe as the icons of both decadence culture and the economy of pleasure mirror an ambiguous urban space of modern “mixed-bloods” in which one could not easily draw boundaries of colonizer and colonized. This point has further implications for critical feminist scholarship on gender history and colonial modernity of Korea.
