한국 로맨틱 코미디 영화에 나타난 여성성 재현의 변화 연구 : <엽기적인 그녀>와 <싱글즈>를 중심으로 (A Study on the Transition of Femininity Representation in Korean Romantic Comedies : focusing on My Sassy Girl and Singles)

초록

스크루볼 코미디(Screwball Comedy)에서 비롯된 로맨틱 코미디는
현재까지 계속 제작되고 있는 인기 영화 장르임에도 불구하고 여남간
의 가벼운 연애담 정도로만 경시되면서 그 의미작용이나 사회문화적
가치가 제대로 연구되지 않아왔다. 그러나 로맨틱 코미디는 단순한
로맨스의 서사에만 그치는 것이 아니라 그 안에는 당대의 사회문화적
상황과 함께 여성성, 남성성 재현의 변화를 담지하고 있으며 내러티
브 구조 안에는 그 사회에서 작동하고 있는 이데올로기를 보여주고
있다.
한국의 로맨틱 코미디는〈결혼 이야기〉의 성공을 기점으로 90년대
이후 늦게 발현됐다. 로맨틱 코미디가 성공할 수 있었던 이유는 소비
적 욕망이 주체가 되는 당대의 사회문화적 상황과 관객의 성향에 중
점을 두는 영화제작 환경의 변화에 있었다. 로맨틱 코미디는 세련된
도시풍경을 배경으로 전문직종에 종사하는 자의식 강한 여남 주인공
들의 좌충우돌 로맨스를 경쾌하면서도 화려하게 그리고 있다. 여기에
서 재현된 여성성은 이전의 한국영화에서 보여준 수동적이고 유약한
모습에서 벗어나 자신의 일과 사랑의 선택에 있어 능동적이고 주체적
인 모습을 보여준다. 그러나 영화의 종결은 사랑의 확인을 통한 결혼
이나 결합의 암시를 보여줌으로써 전통적인 이성애에 기반한 사랑과
가족중심주의를 정당화하는 담론을 벗어나지 못했다.
90년대 중반이후 관객의 관심에서 멀어졌던 로맨틱 코미디는 2000
년대에 이미지와 서사구축에 있어 새로운 재현형식을 가지고 다시 흥
행의 중심을 차지한다.〈 엽기적인 그녀〉는 그 첫 작품으로, 두 주인공
의 캐릭터에 의존해 관습적인 여남의 성역할 전복을 영화의 핵심코드
로 이야기를 이끌어가고 있다. 그러나 영화에서‘엽기적’이라고 표현
될 정도로 강하고 적극적으로 재현된 여성상은 내러티브 구조상 일관성을 유지하지 못하고 영화 후반부에서 멜로드라마 구조로 변하면서,
엽기적인 그녀의 엽기성은 성역할 전복을 어설프면서도 균열이 일어
나는 모순적인 작인으로 만든다. 그러나 대중텍스트의 틈새와 여백은
장르를 유동적으로 만들고 산업적인 측면에서는 좀 더 많은 관객을
효과적으로 끌어들일 수 있는 전략이 될 수 있다.
로맨틱 코미디는〈싱글즈〉에 이르러서는 단순히 여남의 로맨스에
만 중점을 두지 않고, 이와 관련된 현실의 문제에 많이 다가선다.〈 싱
글즈〉는 여성의 일과 사랑에 연관된 성차 이데올로기, 가족 이데올로
기와 같은 문제들을 드러내며 이와 관련된 사회적 제도를 여성 스스
로 주체적으로 선택하는 모습을 그리고 있다. 이는 지금까지의 로맨
틱 코미디가 보여주었던 관습적인 해피엔딩의 귀결로부터 벗어나 여
성이 자신만의 독자적인 공간을 만드는 진일보한 내러티브 구조를 보
여주고 있다.
이와 같이 로맨틱 코미디는 나름의 영화 재현 논리 안에서 여남의
로맨스라는 서사의 변화와 의미, 차이 그리고 그 안에서 발생하는 다
양한 담론과 권력의 역학을 시대적 맥락과 사회문화적 상황에서 낙관
적으로 풀어나가는 성 정치학을 내포하고 있다. 따라서 재현이 수많
은 지배이데올로기와 반지배이데올로기의 갈등과 협상의 장이라고
볼 때, 로맨틱 코미디에서의 여성성 재현의 변화는 우리의 욕망의 추
이와 함께 헤게모니적 관심사가 변화하는 것을 보여주고 있다

영어초록

Though romantic comedy originated in screwball comedy is popular
film genre which has been produced to now, being belittled only light
love talk, its implication, social and cultural value have not been studied
properly. However, romantic comedy, not remaining in simple narrative
of romance, shows that it connotes transition of representation of
femininity and masculinity with contemporary social and cultural
situation and its narrative structure shows ideologies which function in
the society.
Korean romantic comedy which started from success of Wedding
Story was revealed late in 1990s. The reason why romantic comedy
could succeed was social and cultural situation of the 90’s which
consumptive desire became the subject and change of film industry
environment which focused on inclination of audience. Romantic
comedies with refined cityscape as its setting depict airily and
splendidly dramatic romance of highly self-conscious hero and heroine
which are engaged in a special line of business. Femininity which appears in these romantic comedies breaks away from passive and weak
characters represented in korean films before the 90's and shows active
and subjective characters in choice of work and love of women’s own.
However, ending of film showed marriage or cue of marriage through
confirmation of love and didn’t break away from discourses justifying
love and family-centered ideologies based heterosexuality.
After in the middle 1990s, romantic comedies fallen away from
interest of audience hold dominant positions again in box-office record
with new representation form in image and narrative structure in 2000s.
My Sassy Girl is that first film, depends upon unique character of hero
and heroine and makes the reversed gender role the core of narrative.
However, female character represented strongly and actively to the
extent that this film depicts heroine as ‘sassy’ fails to maintain
coherence in narrative structure, being changed into melodramatic
narrative structure in the latter half of the film, character of heroine
makes the reversed gender role contradictory mechanism principle from
which superficiality and rupture arise. However, aperture and space of
popular film text make genre fluid situation and can be strategy which
attracts a large audience effectively in the film industry.
Romantic comedy don't lay emphasis on only romance at Singles and
approaches much real matter related to romance. Singles reveals
problems like gender ideology and family ideology related to occupation
and love of women and depicts women as characters which choose
subjectively for herself social regimes associated with these. This,
breaking away from customary happy ending in romantic comedy having
showed till now, shows progressive narrative structure making special
sphere of women’s own only.
As stated above, romantic comedy, in logic of its film representation
with the context of the times and social and cultural situation,
implicates gender politics clearing optimistically transition,
signification and difference of romance narrative and various discourses
and power mechanism which occur in that. So, regarding representation
as the field of conflict and negotiation of a lot of dominant ideologies and anti-dominant ideologies, the transition of femininity representation
in korean romantic comedies shows changes of hegemonic interests
with changes of desires.
