런던에 위치한 웨스트민스터 사원 내부는 영국 역사를 빛낸 수많은 위인들이 묻혀 있고 이들을 추모하는 조형물로 가득하다. 이들 기념물 중 하나가 프랑스 출신 영국 조각가 루비리악(Roubiliac)이 1761년 완성한『나이팅게일 부부 기념상』이다. 본고는 당대인과 현대인 모두에게 적지 않은 정서적 울림을 야기하는 『나이팅게일 부부 기념상』에 대한 문화사적 내지는 미술사적 이해를 추구하려는 노력의 소산이다. 영국조각사에서 가장 뛰어난 작가로 평가받는 루비리악의 많은 작품 중에서도 가장 유명한 『나이팅게일 부부 기념상』은 그 오랜 명성에도 불구하고 근래에 들어서야 본격적인 학술적 조명을 받기 시작했고, 그나마 소수의 영국조각사 전공자들에게만 잘 알려져 있을 뿐 영국문화에 관심이 있는 일반 대중은 물론이려니와 영국사나 영국미술사 전공자들에게도 여전히 상당히 생소한 작품이다. 본고는 나이팅게일 부부는 누구이며 누가 이 작품을 어떤 맥락에서 주문하였는가라는 지극히 단순한 질문에서 출발했다. 이 질문에 대한 해답을 찾아가는 과정에서 필자는 장례 기념물에 얽힌 죽음과 욕망의 변증법이라는 예기치 않은 새로운 도전에 직면하였고, 본고는 이에 대한 필자 나름의 고민과 탐구의 여정을 담고 있다.

영어초록

In the vault of the Westminster Abbey in London lie a number of bodies of great men and women who have made notable contributions to the history of Britain. As a result, the abbey is full of funerary monuments to commemorate them. Amid the sea of effigies stands a marble memorial, commonly known as the Nightingale Monument, dedicated to the memory of Elizabeth Nightingale and her husband Joseph Nightingale. Completed in 1761 by the French born sculptor Louis Francois Roubiliac, it is generally considered an outstanding work of art which has held a long lasting emotional appeal to viewers, contemporary or modern. Despite its fame, however, the monument has until recently tended to elude serious scholarly attention and remained largely unknown to the students of British history and culture except for a handful of specialists. This paper is an attempt to seek a contextual understanding of the monument in its cultural and art historical milieu. Instigated by the simple wish to discover who the Nightingales were and who commissioned the memorial and why, I have quickly realized the complexity of the seemingly straightforward quest. It has become apparent that a number of issues need to be addressed even before trying to make sense of the monument itself. Therefore, a brief history of death in the west, the practice of making funerary monuments, and the iconography of skeleton are explored to account for the embodiment of husband and wife facing impending death. In addition, some detailed reconstruction of the circumstances surrounding multiple deaths of the Nightingale family as well as a summary of contemporary literary trend known as 'graveyard poetry' are provided to relate the monument to the lived experiences of its contemporaries. To put it simply, what lies beneath the cool and sleek surface of an expensive marble statue representing a wealthy English couple is the violent and unpredictable politics of death and desire involving funerary monuments in human history. This paper, therefore, contains a voyage of agonies over and investigations into the eternal theme of death and desire.
