남해안별신굿 손님풀이 무가 텍스트 이본비교와 서사구조 (South Coast Byeolsingut ‘Sonnim Puri’ Comparison oral texts and Narrative Structure)

초록

본고는 국가무형문화재 남해안별신굿의 손님풀이 무가 텍스트를 분석한 것이다. 손님풀이는 천연두 질병에 관한 본풀이자, 역병에 대처하는 인간의 의례담이다. 현재 손님풀이는 전국적으로 전승확인이 되는 대표적인 무가텍스트이다. 이에 본고에서는 채록된 남해안별신굿(이하 ‘남별’) 무가텍스트 이본을 비교분석하는 작업을 기반으로 그 서사구조와 의미를 고찰하고자 한다.
본고에서 다루고 있는 손님풀이 사설은 ‘남해안필사본 무가’에 수록된 3종과 1982년 정모연이 거제 죽림마을에서 연행된 음원을 채록한 것이다. 그리고 총 4종의 손님풀이를 비교분석한 결과, ‘남별’의 손님풀이는 손님네 도래 시도와 좌절, 도술로 육지도래와 역경, 수명장자의 박대와 노기의 환대, 노기의 소원수행, 수명장자 징치와 공수라는 서사구조에서 벗어나지 않고 있다. 이는 동해안별신굿 손님풀이와 양상이 사뭇 다르다. 특히 동해안별신굿에서 수명장자의 아들 철룡이의 죽음은 처음부터 계획된 징벌이고 선한 노고할매(노구할미)의 이타정신이 드러나지만, 남해안별신굿은 수명장자와 옥동이, 노기댁의 쇠덕이는 부모의 업보를 철저히 수행하는 존재로 등장한다.
남해안별신굿은 마마신의 위력과 복종의 구조라는 종교적 측면은 약화되고 있고, 선악대립구조가 극명하게 전개된다. 이러한 선악구조의 핵심은 수명장자와 손님의 대립으로 환언되며 이것은 남해안별신굿 손님풀이가 지향하는 주제의식과도 밀접한 연관을 맺는다. 남해안별신굿의 서사구조는 동해안별신굿에 비해 마마신의 위력은 약화되며 가난하고 정성스러운 노기댁의 선행으로 구제되는 성격이 두드러진다. 수명장자는 시종일관 손님의 위협을 감지하지 못하는 오만함과 자기중심적 세계에 갇힌 인물이다. 수명장자의 독선은 외동아들의 죽음을 초래하며 패가망신의 결과를 얻게한다.
수명장자와 노기댁의 신세역전은 손님의 도래로 얻은 결과물이다. 이때 손님의 도래는 죽음이라는 불행을 의미하는데 수명장자는 손님이 오기 전까지는 절대적인 자아도취적 만족감으로 살았던 인물이다. 수명장자의 견고한 자기확신은 죽음도 이길만큼 강한 것이었다. 이에 비해 노기댁은 하나밖에 없는 아들이 가난 때문에 종살이를 해야하는 상황에서 손님의 방문으로 신분해방의 기회를 얻게 된다. 손님의 도래가 가져온 결과는 기존의 질서를 역전시키고 세속적인 가치를 전복시키는 축제적 성격을 지닌 것이다. 이러한 남해안별신굿 손님풀이 성격은 굿판에서 더욱 더 호응을 얻는 오락적 기능을 담당하고 있음을 연행현장에서도 확인할 수 있다.

영어초록

This paper is an analysis of ‘Sonnim Puri’ from Namhaean(meaning Southern Coast) Byeolsingut, the national intangible cultural property. Sonnim (meaning guest) Puri(meaning origin story) is a main puri on smallpox diseases and a human ritual story about coping with plague. Currently, the Sonnim Puri is a representative shamanic text that its transmission is found nationwide. Therefore, this paper intends to examine the narrative structure and meaning based on the comparative analysis of the recorded Namhaean Byeolsingut (hereinafter referred to as 'Nambyeol') shamanic text.
The Sonnim Puri editorials covered in this paper are the three types contained in the ‘Namhaean based copied version of Muga’ and the music performed by Jeong Mo-yeon in Jukrim Village, Geoje, in 1982. And as a result of comparative analysis of a total of four types of Sonnim Puri, Nambyeol's Sonnim Puri has not deviated from the narrative structure of attempting and frustration of guest arrival, land arrival by Taoist magic and adversity, inhospitality of Sumyeong-jangja and hospitality of Noki (meaning an old Kisaeng). This is quite different from the Donghaean (meaning East Coast) Byeolsingut Sonnim Puri. In particular, the death of Cheolryong, the son of Sumyeong-jangja, in Donghaean Byeolsingut, is a planned punishment from the beginning and reveals the altruism of Nogo-halmae(meaning old goddess of mountain), but Namhaean Byeolsingut shows Sumyeong-jangja, Okdong-i, and Noki-daek’s Soedeogi as a person who thoroughly performs parental karma.
The religious aspect of the Namhaean Byeolsingut, showing the power of the Mamasin and people’s obedience is weaker and the confrontation or vice and virtue is clear. The core of this structure is said to be a confrontation between the Sumyeong-jangja and the guest, which is closely related to the theme of the Namhaean Byeolsingut Sonnim Puri. The narrative structure of Namhaean Byeolsingut reflects weaker power of Mamasin and more saved by the poor and careful Noki-daek than Donghaean Byeolsingut. Sumyeong-jangja is a person trapped in an arrogant and egocentric world that can not detect the threat toward guest all the time. The self-righteousness of Sumyeong-jangja leads to the death of his only child and brings disgrace to the pedigree.
The reversal of Sumyeong-jangja and Noki-daek is the result of the arrival of guest. At this time, the arrival of guest means death. Before the arrival of guest, Sumyeong-jangja was a person who lived with absolute narcissistic satisfaction. The strong self-confidence of Sumyeong-jangja was strong enough to beat death. On the other hand, Noki-daek, who is in the situation where the only son has to live as slave due to poverty, gets a chance to be emancipated as guest visits. The result of guest visiting has festive aspect, brings changeover of present order and overturns the secular values. This characteristic of the Namhaean Byeolsingut Sonnim Puri is in charge of an entertainment function and well-received, and it can be also found on the ground.
