초록

이 글은 새로 발견된 조선전기 改名牒을 소개하고, 아울러 조선시대 개명 문서의 통시적 변화를 살펴본 것이다. 조선시대 개명 문서는 조선 전기에는 牒, 조선 후기에는 대개 帖으로 발급되었다. 조선전기 개명첩은 그간 알려지지 않았으나, 이번 조사를 통해 옥천향토전시관에 1582년 발급된 鄭雴(1554~1640)의 改名牒이 소장되어있음이 확인되었다.
해당 문서는 조선후기와 달리 목판에 문서 틀을 새겨 인출하고, 발급 시기나 이름 등을 붓으로 기입하는 방식으로 제작되었다. 또, 문서에서 ‘知申事’와 같이 1433년(세종 15) 이후 사라진 용어가 나타나는 점과 1415년(태종 15) 관련 논의가 반영되어 있는 점을 보아 1433년 이전 문서의 양식이 정해진 뒤 현전 문서가 발급된 1582년까지 같은 양식의 개명첩이 발급된 것으로 보인다.
본고에서는 새로 발견된 조선시대 개명 문서 4점과 기존에 알려진 개명문서를 아울러 살펴보고, 시기별 양식 변화를 살펴보았다. 그 결과 임진왜란 이후인 17세기에는 문서가 牒에서 帖으로 변화하는 과도기적 특성이 보였으며, 18세기 무렵 양식이 정착되어 19세기까지 이어지는 특성을 확인할 수 있었다.
정립의 개명첩은 현재 알려진 개명 문서 중 가장 이른 시기의 자료이면서, 故牒式으로 된 문서 중 발급시기가 가장 늦으므로 현전 자료의 상․하한선을 넓혔다는 점과 제작 방식, 내용 등에서 가치를 지닌다.

영어초록

This article first examines the newly uncovered gaemyeongcheop(改名牒, official note of name change) from the early Joseon period and then the diachronic changes of name change documents across the Joseon period. The name change documents of the Joseon period were usually issued as cheop(牒) in the early Joseon period and cheop(帖) in the late Joseon period. Although the gaemyeongcheop of the early Joseon period have been hitherto unknown, the present study confirmed the presence of the gaemyeongcheop of Jeong Lip(1554–1640) at the Okcheon Rural Exhibition Hall, which was issued in 1582.
Unlike documents from the late Joseon period, this document was printed from woodblocks that were used to carve out the document template after which the time of issue and names were filled in using a brush. Furthermore, considering the fact that terms that disappeared after 1433(Sejong year 15), such as jishinsa(知申事, the name of a government post), appear in the document, and that the discussion pertaining to 1415(Taejong year 15) are reflected in the document, it seems the same format of gaemyeongcheop had been issued up to 1582 when the present document was issued after the document format had been determined prior to 1433.
The present article examines four newly discovered name change documents from the Joseon period together with previously known name change documents and analyzes changes in format by period. The results show that documents from the 17th century after the Japanese invasions of Korea exhibit transitional characteristics wherein the documents change from cheop(牒) to cheop (帖), with the format becoming established in the 18th century and continuing on into the 19th century.
The present document is material from the earliest period out of all known name change documents and the latest in terms of issue date out of all documents in the gocheop format(故牒式, an official document issued from a government agency to an individual), so it carries value with regard to its method of production, content, and for having extended the upper and lower limits of all documents transmitted to the present time.
