<배비장전>에 나타난 신분의 한계와 극복 방안 (A Study on how to overcome and limit of social standing in Baebijangjeon)

초록

조선후기 신분제의 변화는 사회적․경제적으로 많은 변화를 초래하였다. 양반층의 신분 분화로 권력층과 몰락양반이 양극화되면서 신분은 양반이지만 실생활에서는 무능한 계층이 양산되었다. 이러한 사회적 현상 속에서 사대부들의 타락한 삶과 거짓된 윤리의식을 드러내어 풍자한 소설들이 다수 등장하게 되었다. 그중에 대표적인 작품이 바로 <배비장전>이다. 이 논문은 <배비장전>에 나타난 신분의 한계와 극복 방안에 대해 살펴보았다. 그 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 조선후기는 양반층의 신분 분화로 권력층과 몰락양반이 양극화되면서 신분은 양반이지만 실생활에서는 무능한 계층이 양산되었다. 조선후기에 상․하층이 공모하여 가식적인 양반을 훼절시키는 소설이 유행하였던 근원도 여기에 있다. 이것은 신분제도의 모순을 극복하고 근대의식을 추수(追隨)하여 나타난 결과이다.
둘째, <배비장전>에 나타난 관료들은 권위를 내세우며 군림하지만 실제에 있어서는 무능한 계층이라 할 수 있다. 그래서 제주목사가 하층민을 동원하여 위선적인 인물의 가식을 벗기기로 한다. 이는 양반의 위엄과 권위의 한계를 인식하고 하층민을 주동자로 하여 상․하의 조화를 모색한 것이라 할 수 있다. 또한 평등의 세계로 나가고자 하는 인식의 전환을 확인할 수도 있다.
셋째, <배비장전>에 나타난 신분의 한계와 극복이 갖는 의미를 문학사적으로 조망해 보았다. 이 작품에서는 관리로서 무엇이 정당한지를 모르는 정비장과 가식적인 인물 배비장을 가장 천한 신분인 기생과 방자가 동참하여 풍자․조롱하고 있다. 이것은 이들이 민중을 대변하는 위치에서 강력하게 항변한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 상층 신분의 가식을 끌어내리고 민중의 진정성을 보여줌으로써 중세에서 근대로 전환될 수 있다. 따라서 이 작품은 중세에서 근대사회로 넘어가는 과도기에 주자학적인 이념을 버리고 근대적인 사고를 적절히 수렴한 것으로 볼 수 있다. 한편으로 신분을 벗어던질 때 새로운 시대로 나아갈 수 있음을 일깨워 주고 있다.

영어초록

The change of the class system in the late Joseon Dynasty caused significant change in social and economic ways. Differentiation of yangban class led to polarization of the class with power and fallen yangban, which produced the class with title of yangban but is incompetent in practical life. In this social phenomenon, numerous satirical novels about corrupt life and false ethics of gentry appeared. One of most representative works is Baebijangjeon. This study examines limitation of the class and method to overcome this appeared in Baebijangjeon.
First, differentiation of yangban class led to polarization of theclass with power and fallen yangban, which produced the class with title of yangban but is incompetent in practical life. This is the reason why novels about the upper and lower classes cooperating to surrender integrity of false yangban prevailed in late Joseon dynasty. This is the result of overcoming contradiction of the class system and pursuing modern awareness.
Second, bureaucrats appeared in Baebijangjeon are classes that reign over by asserting their authority, but are incompetent in practical life. Thus Jeju official gathered the lower class and planned to remove affectation of hypocritical character. This can be seen as recognizing limitation of dignity and authority of yangban and groping for harmony of the upper and lower classes with the lower class taking the leading part. Moreover, change of recognition to pursue equal society can be found.
Third, the study examines the meaning of limitation and overcoming of the class in the perspective of literary history. In this novel, Jungbijang who does not know what is right as official and Baebijang who is character with affectation are satire and mocked by the lowest class, gisaeng and bangja. This can be seen that they were strongly protesting, representing the public. This is changeover to modern era from medieval by removing affectation of the upper class and demonstrating sincerity of the public. Therefore, this novel renounced Neo-Confucianism ideology and appropriately applied the modern thought in the transition period to modern era from medieval. On the other hand, it enlightens that when people free themselves from the class, they can proceed to new era.
