초록

전기, 자서전, 소설은 문학의 세 가지 주요 자기표현 양식이다. 이러
한 양식의 글쓰기는 모두 개인의 삶을 전기적 또는 역사적 시각에서
접근한다는 데 공통점이 있다. 이 연구는 겉으로 다른 것처럼 보이는
이러한 글쓰기 사이의 연관성을 발견하여, 문학에서 삶의 글의 범위를
넓히는 장르의 결합을 목표로 하고 있다. 전기, 자서전, 소설은 개인의
삶이 갖는 주관적 차원을 강조하고, 관찰과 측정이 가능한 사실들을 다
루는 이론적 또는 과학적 글쓰기의 요구에 순응하지 않는 사적 글쓰기
에 속한다. 모든 문학적 글쓰기는 사실상 개인의 삶에 대한 이야기가
된다는 점에서 전기적 또는 자서전적 성격을 갖는다. 이야기 차원에서
실제와 허구 사이의 명확한 구분이 존재하지 않는다는 점을 인정한다
면 이러한 양식의 글쓰기를 장르상으로 구별하는 것은 타당성을 가질
수 없다.
최근 들어 유행하고 있는 전기적 또는 자서전적 소설의 출판은 우리
시대의 전기적 또는 자서전적 경향을 반영한다. 우리 문화는 눈에 보이
는 모든 것을 화자의 전기적 또는 역사적 의식을 통하여 설명하도록
요구한다. 이러한 요구에 따라 전기, 자서전 그리고 소설의 작가들은
자신들이 보거나 체험한 것을 당위적으로 설명하고 해석한다는 데서
공통점을 갖는다. 서로 다른 양식의 삶의 글과 함께, 소설 기법을 실험
적으로 사용하고 있는 작가들로 말미암아 자기표현의 글쓰기도 변화를
하였다. 이러한 변화는 문학 장르가 분화되고 재통합되는 특성과 더불어, 주체와 객체, 사실과 허구, 그리고 공적 영역과 사적 영역의 와해를
통한 보다 실용적인 문학을 유도하고 있다.
전기, 자서전, 소설은 어떤 장르에 속하든 개인의 삶을 서술하는 데
서 오는 복합성과 다양성을 포착하려고 한다. 개인의 삶에는 결코 알
수 없는 점이 존재하기 때문에 이러한 글쓰기는 고유의 기법과 서술
방법을 통하여 인간성의 진실을 모색하려고 한다. 동시에 전통적인 구
분을 거부하는 실험적 양식의 자기표현은 개인의 삶이 갖는 복합성을
서술하기가 더욱 어려워진 우리 시대의 징후로 간주될 수 있다. 결론적
으로 전기, 자서전, 소설의 융합은 삶의 글의 영역을 확대하려고 시도
하는 사적 글쓰기의 뚜렷한 예가 된다.

영어초록

Biography, autobiography and fiction constitute the three major
forms of self-expression in literature. These forms of writing have
a common ground that the individual life can be approached through
a biographical or historical perspective. This study aims to provide
the interconnection between these seemingly different forms of
writing, with a cluster of genres that expand a range of life writing
in literature. Biography, autobiography and fiction, with emphasis on
the subjective dimension of personal life, belong to private writing
that does not subject to the demand of theoretical or scientific
writing that deals with observable and measurable facts. All literary
writings are biographical or autobiographical in the sense that they
actually become a story of individual life. If we admit that there
exists no clear distinction between fiction and non-fiction in terms
of a story, it will lose its validity to make a division among these
forms of writing in genre.
The publication of biographical or autobiographical fiction that has
become popular in recent years reflects biographical or
autobiographical tendency of our time. Our culture requires that
everything visible must be explained through the biographical or
historical consciousness of the narrator. In accordance with this
demand, the authors of biography, autobiography and fiction have
the same purpose in explaining and interpreting what they saw or
experienced as if they were obliged to. With the different forms of
life writing, the writing of self-expression has also changed due to
the writers who are experimenting with the use of fictional
technique. While literary genre has a tendency to be classified and reintegrated, this change leads to the more practical value in
literature along with the disintegration of subject-object, fact-fiction,
and public-private sphere.
Whatever genre they belong to, biography, autobiography and
fiction strive to capture the complexity and diversity involved in
recounting individual life. Since there exists something in individual
life that can never be known, each exercises an approach to finding
truth in humanity through the unique technique and narrative
method. Consequently, the experimental forms of self-expression
that defies the traditional classification can be defined as a sign of
our age in which it becomes more difficult to describe the
complexity of individual life. In conclusion, the amalgamation of
biography, autobiography and fiction is an extraordinary example of
private writing with an attempt to broaden the area of life writing.
