‘傳’, 歷史와 文學의 境界 (Biography, the boundaries of history and literature)

초록

‘傳’은 개인이나 소수의 기억을 더 큰 집단의 기억으로 바꾸고 싶어 하는 작가의 바람이 투영되는 서사물이다. 사실 이는 본래 歷史의 속성이기도 하다. 그런데 개인이나 특정한 소수의 기억은 역사가 될 수 없고, 혹여 되더라도 그 의미는 개인이 간직하거나 특정 소수가 공유하는 추억일 수밖에 없다. 그런 점에서 보자면, ‘전’은 기억의 확장과 확산을 시도하는 작업이다. 그리고 ‘전’은 작가의 상상이 적극 개입되는, 다르게 말해 문학성이 농후한 글쓰기이다.
‘傳’은 사마천의 『史記列傳』에서 시작되었다. 다른 말로 하자면 태생부터 역사의 일부였던 것이다. 그리고 한걸음 더 나아가 사마천의 『史記』에서 유독 문학적 속성이 두드러지게 빛나는 부분이 ‘列傳’이라는 사실도 굳이 더 말할 필요가 없는 사실임에 다시 주목할 필요가 있다. 인물의 개성을 묘사하거나 當代의 역사적·사회적 상황과 拮抗하는 개인의 분투를 묘사하거나 거역할 수 없는 운명 앞에 처절히 무너지는 인생의 비극을 담아내거나 삶의 기쁨과 환희에 득의연하는 인간의 경박함을 나타내거나 자연과 인생의 오묘한 이치를 꿰뚫어 통찰의 지혜를 보이거나 인격과 도덕·윤리적 표상으로서 감동을 주고 모범이 된 인물 등등, 열전은 그 태생에서부터 역사의 일부이지만 또 한편으로 문학일 수밖에 없는 운명이었다.
‘傳’은 그 시작에서부터 한 인물의 삶을 도덕적·윤리적으로 평가하여 그의 삶을 집단이 공유해야 할 이념적 가치로 윤색해왔다. 사실 조선후기의 ‘전’에는 이러한 이념적 가치를 삶을 통해 실현한 인물들을 형상화한 작품이 많다. 소위 「열녀전」·「절부전」·「효자전」·「충신전」 등이 그것이다. 이러한 이념을 지향하는 작품이 양적으로 증가하는 현상과 그 내용의 특성은 매우 흥미로운 연구주제이다. 이 또한 문학사적 현상의 하나로 보이는데, 별도의 논문에서 다루어야 할 주제이다.

영어초록

Biography is seosamul(敍事物) wind of artists who want to change the memory of an individual or a small number of larger collective memory of that projection. This fact is also the properties of the original history. But it can not be the memory of a person or a particular minority has a history, perhaps even the meaning can only be memories that individuals keep or share a particular minority. From a point like that, 'Biography' is a work that attempts to spread and expansion of memory. And 'Biography' is the one writing me differently, that the artist's imagination is rich literary property aggressive intervention.
Biography began in The Historical Biographies(『史記列傳』) of Sima Qian. In other words, it was part of history from the birth. And there is a further need to step The Records(『史記』)’s shining part is especially prominently in the literary property of Sima Qian back to this remarkable fact is also true to say that there is no more need to bother The Historical Biographies(『史記列傳』).
