전주국제영화제의 주제의식과 콘텐츠 변화 연구 (A Study on the Variation of Themes and Programs of the Jeonju International Film Festival)

초록

2000년 처음 시작된 전주국제영화제는 부산, 부천에 이어 후발주자로 시작되었으나 대안, 디지털, 독립이라는 주제의식을 내세워 16회 동안 이어져왔다. 영화라는매체를 사용해 대안의 한 형태를 제시해왔고 영화제가 진행되는 동안 다양한 주제를다루었다. 일반적인 주류영화에서는 다루지 않는 소외된 사람, 사물, 가치를 중심으로 한 영화들을 소개했다. 여성, 노인, 청소년, 동성애, 소수민족, 제 3세계, 국가권력과 자본에 의해 고통 받는 일반 시민 등 소외된 대상을 전주국제영화제의 중심으로이끌어냈다.
전주국제영화제가 제시하는 대안은 디지털 기술의 활용과 독립영화 장르의 주목을 통해 가능했다. 전주국제영화제의 세 가지 주제의식은 영화제의 콘텐츠 구성에있어 중요한 역할을 해낸 것이다. 변화기에 놓여있는 전주국제영화제는 세 가지주제의식에서 디지털을 떼어내고 새로운 도약을 준비하고 있다.
대안, 디지털, 독립이라는 주제의식을 중심으로 전주국제영화제의 콘텐츠는 변화했다. 콘텐츠의 변화를 한 눈에 알아볼 수 있는 것은 JIFF 프로젝트인 디지털 삼인삼색과 숏숏숏을 통해 확인할 수 있다. 두 가지 프로그램이 지나온 것을 확인하는것은 곧 전주국제영화제의 콘텐츠의 흐름을 확인할 수 있다.
JIFF 프로젝트는 전주국제영화제에서 직접 생산하는 콘텐츠들을 확인 할 수 있다면, 다른 섹션에서는 대안적 형태의 실험적 성격이 강한 독립영화들이 관객과 만날수 있는 장을 제공하고 있다. 다른 국제영화제에서도 독립영화들에 대한 지지와소개할 수 있는 섹션을 운영하지만, 전주국제영화제는 출범하면서부터 독립영화를주목하고 그에 맞는 정체성을 내세웠다.
결과적으로 전주국제영화제는 16회가 진행되는 동안 주제의식을 중심으로 대안적이고 실험적인 콘텐츠를 생산해왔다. 전주국제영화제의 주제의식이 이제는 기존의 디지털이라는 주제의식을 떼어내고 대안과 독립 두 가지로 주제의식을 수정했다. 제 1회 전주국제영화제가 출범할 당시 디지털이 가지고 있던 의미가 이제는 사라졌지만, 대안으로서의 성격은 유지되고 있다. 전주국제영화제의 대안적 성격은 지금도유효하고 의미 있는 도전으로 여겨지고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 더 많은 대안영화들이 주류 영화제에 진입하기 위해서는 대안문화를 새롭게 해석하는 다양한 도전과시도가 필요한 시점이다.

영어초록

This study analyzed the Jeonju International Film Festival, from the 1st festival held in the year 2000 to the 16th festival held in the year 2015 from an organizational aspect. The Jeonju International Film Festival was a late starter after Busan and Bucheon but with its alternative, digital, and independent themes, it has continued on for 16 years. It has presented alternative forms using film media and it has covered various themes during its progression. It has introduced films that focus on people, objects, and values that are neglected and not covered by general mainstream films. Neglected subjects such as women, the elderly, adolescents, gays, minorities, those in third world countries, and general citizens suffering from government power and capital have been brought out as focused subjects of the Jeonju International Film Festival.
The alternatives proposed by the Jeonju International Film Festival were made possible through the utilization of digital technology and focus placed on the independent film genre. The three themes of the Jeonju International Film Festival played an important role in constructing the contents of the film festival. The Jeonju International Film Festival in its changing phase removes the digital element from three themes and is preparing for a new leap.
The contents of the Jeonju International Film Festival have changed to place focus on alternative, digital, and independent themes. Changes in contents can be seen at a glance through the JIFF projects ‘Digital Short Films by Film Makers’ and ‘Short! Short! Short!’.
The passing of the two kinds of programs shows the flow of Jeonju International Film Festival contents.
However the identity of the Jeonju International Film Festival is yet to become known to many people. Directors and actors who have produced works through the Jeonju International Film Festival and its numerous film contents have only been met by the limited number of people who have sought out the film festival. As a result, while the themes and film contents of the Jeonju International Film Festival have fully been recognized for their value by film festival experts and enthusiasts, it has been pointed out that it lacks popular appeal which would allow it to be experienced by many more people.
In the future, the Jeonju International Film Festival should find ways to bring the contents that it has produced over the past 16 years to a wider public that also includes those who have visited and will visit the film festival. At this, the researcher of this study presented four methods with which to utilize the contents of the Jeonju International Film Festival.
