한국 근대소설 장르 형성과정 논의의 제 문제 (On the Formative Process of the Genre of Modern Korean Novel)

초록

본고는 한국 근대소설 장르의 형성과정을 검토하는 데 필요한 방법론적 구도를 모색하고 근대소설 장르 형성기의 특징을 지적한 뒤 향후 연구가 필요한 지점들을 제시함으로써, 관련 논의를 생산적으로 발전시킬 수 있는 바탕을 구축해 보았다.
초창기 근대소설사가 그대로 장르 형성기와 맞물리는 한국 근대소설의 특징을 왜곡하지 않기 위해서는 포괄적인 연구방법론이 필요하다. 소설작품들의 특성과 문인들의 장르 의식, 독자들의 문학 수용 관습, 소설의 매체 및 환경이라는 네 가지를 포괄적으로 검토하여 상호영향관계에 따른 특징을 규명해야 한다.
한국 근대소설 장르는 작가들의 장르 의식과 문학 환경 사이의 긴장관계 속에서 형성되었다. 사정이 이러하였기에 작가들이 의식한 근대소설 장르와 그들이 발표한 작품의 실제 사이에 거리가 존재하게 되었는데, 이러한 점은 애국계몽기의 소설에서 1920년대에 이르기까지 지속적으로 확인된다.
위의 거리에 의해 형성기 한국 근대소설은 장르적 동요 양상을 보이는데 이는 `분량 면에서의 불안정성`과 `다양한 장르 교섭 양상`으로 확인된다. 전자는 소품과 단편, 중편, 장편이 혼재하는 양상을 통해 명확히 확인되는데, 이를 통해서, 1920년대에 이르기까지 중편소설이나 장단편의 장르적 안정성이 확보되지 못했음을 알 수 있다. 후자는 형성과정에 있는 근대소설에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 특징으로 한국 근대소설의 경우도 여타 문학 장르나 서사 요소가 혼합되다시피 한 양상을 보인다.
1930년대 소설계가 보이는 근대소설의 정립상을 근대소설 장르의 형성이라는 면에서 확증하기 위해서는 다음에 주목할 필요가 있다. 첫째는 분량 면에서의 장르규범의 구축 양상이고, 둘째는 대중문학의 타자화 현상을 통해 확인할 수 있는 구성 면에서의 규범화 양상이며, 셋째는 발표 매체 등 문학 환경의 변화 양상이고, 끝으로 넷째는 `작가의 언어`의 증감 양상 등 소설 언어의 분석이다. 이상 네 가지는 한국 근대소설 장르의 형성과정을 밝히는 추후의 연구들이 발전시켜야 할 문제 영역이라 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study aims to make a proper methodology for investigating the formative process of the modern Korean novel, to make clear the peculiarities of that process and to suggest the themes which should be studied henceforth. In short, the end of this study is to provide a framework for future research.
In order not to misunderstand the peculiarity that the formative process of the modern novel genre in Korea is at thesame time the history of the modern Korean novel, a comprehensive research method is needed. The new method should cover these four elements: features of works, authors’ genre consciousness, readers’ customs for appreciating works and media environment. Using this method, it will be possible to investigate the peculiarities which come from the interaction of those four elements.
The genre of the modern Korean novel has been formed in the conflict between authors’ consciousness and the environment of literature. So the reality of the modern Korean novel genre can be described properly only in the consideration of the gap between the two elements which is continuously found until the 1920’s. Due to the conflict there happened a generic instability which resulted in the inconsistency in length of a work’ and ‘the interaction with various texts’. The former can be found in the coexistence of very short narratives, short stories, novelettes and novels, none of which had normative rules in narrative length. This coexistence shows that there were not apparent borderlines among these narratives and that the identity of the sub-genres of novelette or short story were not formed until the 1920’s. The latter is such a common feature of the modern novel in the formative process that various narratives, lyrics and other texts are utilized in the formation of the genre of the modern Korean novel.
The fact that the genre of the modern Korean novel was established in the 1930’s can be confirmed by further studies on these four themes: (1) the formative process of the rules in the
length of work, (2) the standardization of narrative formation in sub-genres which may be reasoned by confirming the advent of discourses excluding popular literature, (3) the changes of the environments of literature and (4) the analysis of the voices of a work especially the variations of ‘the voice of narrator-author’.
