마을제 제천시설의 유형 연구 (A Study on the Types of Heaven Ritual祭天 Facilities for the Village Rites)

초록

한국 제천문화의 원형기인 서기전 4000년∼600년경 백두산 서편 지역에서 시작한 ‘(환호를 두른) 구릉성 제천시설’은 한반도 남부로 계승되어 청동기∼초기철기시대 다양한 유형의 ‘(환호를 두른) 구릉성 제천시설(적석단ㆍ선돌ㆍ고인돌ㆍ나무솟대ㆍ제천사류)’로 이어졌다. 현존하는 마을제에 나타난 제천시설 유형은 청동기∼초기철기시대부터 이어지는 ‘(환호를 두른) 구릉성 제천시설’의 원형을 그대로 계승한 형태와 제천의 뜻이 희석되고 편의성이 부각되면서 여러 가지 현실적 이유로 민인들의 생활터전인 마을로 내려와 자리 잡은 제천시설 즉 구릉성 제천시설의 변형적 형태 두 가지 계통으로 구분하여 볼 수 있다. 이들 계통은 각각 단종(제단ㆍ신목ㆍ선돌ㆍ제천사ㆍ산) 유형과 서로 중첩되어 나타난 2종 복합 유형, 3종 이상 복합 유형으로 구분해서 나누어 볼수 있는데, ‘구릉성 제천시설’ 계통의 경우 야트막한 산등성이에 위치한 구릉성이라는 입지 조건하에 제단(적석탑), 신목, 선돌, 제천사, 산 등이 각각 또는 복합되어 나타나며 솟대와 장승은 희박한 편이다. 반면 ‘(환호를 두른) 구릉성 제천시설’의 변형적 형태인 ‘마을로 내려온 제천시설’ 계통의 경우 ‘구릉성 제천시설’ 계통과 비슷한 양상을 띄지만, 상대적으로 제천사의 숫자가 줄어들고 솟대와 장승이 더해져 형태상으로 더 다양하게 나타난다. ‘마을로 내려온 제천시설’ 계통이 ‘구릉성 제천시설’ 계통보다 형태상으로 다변화되는 이유는 산등성이 신성하고 정갈한 터에 자리 잡은 신목과 제천사에서 제천하던 전통이 후대로 갈수록 민인들의 삶의 터전 가까이로 내려와 제천의 신성성은 희석되지만 민인들의 다양한 기원과 바램을 담아 다양한 형태의 제천시설을 만들었기때문으로 짐작해 볼 수 있다.

영어초록

The hilly heaven ritual facilities(with a moat) which had been started in the west of Mt. BaekDu around B.C. 4000 and kept to A.D. 600, the archetypal era of heaven rituals, was succeeded to the southern Korean peninsula as various types of hilly heaven ritual facilities( the stone-mound altar․ the menhir․ the dolmen․ the tree Sotdae(heavenly pole)․ the shrine for heaven ritual) with a moat in the bronze and early iron ages.


The existent heaven ritual facilities for the village rites can be divided into two types. One is the type that inherited the original form of ‘hilly heaven ritual facilities (with a moat)’ in the bronze and early iron ages. The other is the modified types of ritual facilities (with a moat) that came down to the villages, people’s site of living for several realistic reasons such as the dilution of heaven ritual’s meaning and the emphasis on the convenience. The latter also can be divided into three types. The first one is the simple type (including only one among the altar, the holy tree, the menhir, the shrine and the mountain). The second one is the double compound type. The third is the type of more than triple compound.


In case of ‘hilly heaven ritual facilities’ under the geographical condition of hills located in low ridges, the altars and the like( the stone mound, the holy tree, the menhir, the shrine, and the mountain) appear either respectively or in compound. SotDaes(heavenly poles) and JangSeungs(Korean traditional totem poles at the village entrance) are sort of rare. On the other hand, the modified types of ‘hilly heaven ritual facilities(with a moat)’ that came down to the village have similar aspects with hilly ritual facilities. But instead of the number of the shrines being decreased relatively, SotDaes and JangSeungs have been added to make more variety in the appearance of facilities.


Why do ritual facilities which came down to the villages have more diversified forms than hilly heaven ritual facilities? As time went by, the heaven ritual tradition which had been held in the shrine or in front of the holy tree of the sacred clean ground on the ridge came down near to the people’s living foundation. In the meanwhile the divineness of the heaven ritual has been thinned, they have built various forms of heaven ritual facilities including their diverse wishes and desires. These are the reckonable reasons.
