신라의 태자 책봉제 수용 과정 고찰 (The Implementation of the Crown Prince Installation System(太子冊封制) in the Silla Kingdom)

초록

신라 상고기의 왕위는 현왕의 죽음에 임박해 왕의 고명이나 국인 추대를 통해 왕의 자나 손 또는 사위에게 계승되었다. 이러한 상고기에는 현왕 재위기 왕의 의지에 의해 계위자가 결정되고, 책봉 범위도 왕의 적장자나 직계 자손에 한정되는 태자제가 수용될 수 없었다. 그런데 신라는 4세기말 5세기 초 고구려에 대한 인질 외교의 와중에 고구려를 통해 간접적으로 본 제도를 경험하였다. 더 나아가 눌지왕은 고구려 태자 공과의 대면을 통해 태자가 지니는 정치적 위상을 숙지하기도 했다. 또한 눌지왕대부터 장자에 의한 왕위 계승이 이루어졌지만, 법흥왕대에 이르기까지 귀족을 초월하는 왕권의 미성숙으로 태자 책봉이 시행되지 못했다.
법흥왕대의 법제적 정비를 기반으로 영토 팽창을 통해 비약적인 왕권의 성장을 이루어낸 진흥왕은 적극적인 대중국외교의 와중에 북제로부터 ‘사지절동이교위낙랑군공신라왕’에 책봉되었다. 이 과정에서 일반 왕족과 구별될 만한 외교적 권위를 확보한 진흥왕은 중국적인 책봉 예제의 효용성을 알게 된다. 이의 연장선상에서 왕위 계승의 안정을 담보할 수 있는 태자 책봉제를 도입하여 장자 동륜을 왕태자로 책봉하였다. 다만 동륜 태자는 부왕보다 조사하여 즉위하지 못하고, 진흥왕의 고명을 통해 계위한 진지왕은 왕자가 있었지만 예상치 못한 폐위로 책봉을 실시하지 못하였다. 이후 진평왕은 진지왕을 폐위시킨 국인들의 추대를 통해 즉위함으로 거듭 재래의 계승 방식이 등장하였다. 이후 진평왕은 장녀 덕만의 유례없는 즉위를 위해 동륜태자의 직계 비속인 성골만이 왕이 된다는 새로운 계위 방식을 창출했다. 그러나 이렇게 즉위했던 선덕은 적자가 부재했고 현실적인 ‘여주불능선리’라는 구호를 내세워 왕권에 도전했던 비담의 행적에서 알 수 있듯이 성골 계위의 방식은 지속되지 못하였다. 그리고 진덕여왕의 사후 구습인 국인추대를 통해 무열왕이 즉위하였고, 무열왕은 재위 2년 장남 김법민을 태자로 책봉하며 본 제도가 정착된다. 이후 역대 왕들은 무자나 시해 그리고 급사 등의 특별한 경우를 제외하고 재위기 태자를 책봉했다.

영어초록

In the ancient Silla period, when it was close to King's last moments of life, the King turned over the throne to his son, grandson, or his son in law through acknowledgment or aristocrat’s recommendation. Therefore the Crown Prince installation system, by which the range of a successor to the throne is limited to King's legal posterity or direct descendants and the existing King could choose his successor, could not accepted. However, Silla people indirectly experienced the Crown Prince installation system through diplomatic contact with Goguryeo Kingdom(高句麗) during the late 4th and early 5th century. Furthermore, King Nulji(訥祗王) of Silla met Crown Princess Hong(太子 恭) of Goguryeo and witnessed the political stature of the Crown Princess. Even though, the oldest son of the King started to inherit the throne since the era of King Nulji, the royal authority was not strong enough to transcend aristocrats until the era of King Beopheung(法興王) so that the Crown Prince installation system could not be implemented. On the basis of the legislative reform of King Beopheung, King Jinheung(眞興王) expanded the territory of the Silla Kingdom and rapidly strengthened the royal authority and, as a result of an active diplomacy, he could officially acquired the title of 'Sajijeoldongyikyowuinakranggungongsillawang (使持節東夷校尉樂浪郡公新羅王)' from the Nothern Je Kingdom(北齊). Through this process, he attained a distinctive political authority and recognized the political effect of the Crown Prince installation system. Therefore, he accepted the system in the following year and invested his oldest son Dongryun(銅輪) as the Crown Princess. But Crown Princess Dongryun passed away at an early age. Thus King Jinji(眞智王), who inherited the throne through the acknowledgment of King Jinheung, could not implement the Crown Prince installation system even though he had a prince. It was because of his sudden dethronement. After this, King Jinpyeong(眞平王) inherited the throne by the recommendation of aristocrats, who dethroned the former King, and this means that the old succession system was revived. Since then, King Jinpeyong’s daughter Deokman(德曼) inherited the throne unprecedentedly, and for her enthronement, the new succession system, by which only Seongol(聖骨) class could inherit the throne, was implemented. But this system could not last long since Bidam(毗曇) revolted against the Queen while she was trying to turn over the throne to Queen Jindeok(眞德女王). Bidam claimed that a Queen could not govern the state well enough. After the death of Queen Jindeok, King Muyeol(武烈王) inherited the throne by aristocrats' recommendation, and the King invested his second son as the Crown Princess. This means that the Crown Prince installation system was finally settled down in Silla government. Since then, successive Kings continuously invested their own Crown Princess while they were upon the throne, unless they did not have any son or they got assassinated or died suddenly.
