The three major branches of world Christianity are the Roman Catholic Church, the Eastern Orthodox Church, and the Protestant Church. The Russian Orthodox Church among Eastern Orthodox churches served on the Korean Peninsula.
At the end of the 19th century, when Korea and Russia were in close political affinity, the Korean Mission of the Russian Orthodox Church was formed. The first missionary Khrisanf, who arrived in February 1900, realized that the most urgent task for Korean missions was to learn language and to produce translated books of faith in Korean. He saw the Part 2 of the "Easy Stories of the Great Lord's Work" of Makarij Tomskij as a useful resource for Korean mission. Because this book was a short but easy-to-read booklet that summarizes the Old and New Testaments, he thought it was a good guide for beginners in Korea. However, the translation work was not easily progressed, and because of the Russo-Japanese War, it was not published during his tenure.
In 1907, 『Jaamjinmyong』 was published, which the second missionary, Pavel Ivanovskij revised Khrisaf's translation and combined several other manuscripts into an excellent guide to faith. This book is basically translated into pure Korean letters, which is believed to have been influenced by the Protestant missionary movement in Korea at that time. The contents of 『Jaamjinmyong』 are composed of Shimsangyeoneui (a revised version of the Easy Stories of the Great Lord's Work), baptism questions, lesson books, church calendars, baptismal names, etc. It is regarded as a material that is very substantial both in the variety of materials and in the depth of contents. Since more than 100 years have passed, the book now has a linguistic value in addition to the theological meaning as a missionary material, so it can be further studied from various perspectives.
However, it is not known how much this book was used as missionary material at that time. In the early 20th century, the Russian Orthodox Church of Korea became active, but after that, it declined under rapid political and social changes. In the mid-20th century, the Russian Orthodox church seemed to be cut off.
After a while he has entered into the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of Constantinople, then in early 2019, a new Russian Orthodox missionary era was opened with the installation of the Korean parish under the Patriarch of Moscow. One church in North Korea and one new church in Seoul belong to this Korean parish. The Russian Orthodox missionary work in Korea has begun again, and what will happen in the future is an open matter with time.
