바라춤 연구－인천수륙재의 바라춤을 중심으로－ (A Study on the Bara Dance－Especially on Bara Dance of Incheon Surukjae－)

초록

불교의 영향으로 이어져 내려온 불교의식 중에서도 수륙재(水陸齋)는 음악과 무용의 예술적 가치가 매우 높은 한국 전통 문화의 한 부분을 차지하고 있다. 또한 수륙재에서 행해지는 불교의식무는 불교와 예술의 밀접한 관계를 잘 보여주고 있다.
본 논문에서는 많은 지역의 수륙재 중 인천수륙재(仁川水陸齋)에서 작법되어지고 있는 불교의식무 중 바라춤의 연구를 통하여 우리나라 불교의식무의 사상과 정신을 이해하고자 하였다. 또한 본 연구자는 쇠퇴해지고 있는 불교의 사상과 문화를 되찾을 필요가 있다고 생각하여 인천수륙재에 대한 정리와 바라춤의 동작 분석을 통해 인천수륙재와 바라춤의 전통을 유지ㆍ보존하고 발전시키는데 필요한 기초자료를 제공하고자 본 논문의 연구를 시작하였다.
인천수륙재의 바라춤을 분석하여 다음과 같은 특징을 추출하였다.
첫째, 많은 지역에서 수륙재가 행하여지고 있지만 문화재로 지정되어 있는 지역은 ‘인천’ 뿐이다.
둘째, 인천수륙재에서 행해지고 있는 바라춤의 종류 중 오방잡과 회향성바라는 타 지역에서 행해지지 않는다. 그러므로 오방잡과 회향성바라는 인천수륙재만의 특징이라 하겠다.
셋째, 인천수륙재에서 행하여지고 있는 바라춤은 타 지역에 비해 춤의 동작이 크고, 역동적이며, 화려하다. 그 이유는 인천은 바다와 근접해있는 지역으로 바다에서 불어오는 바람으로 인해 바라가 빠르고 크게 돌아가며, 바라춤을 출 때 바람이 세게 불어 바라를 역동적으로 돌리지 않으면 바라가 의도하지 않게 움직이기 때문이다.
넷째, 인천수륙재에서는 타 지역과 같이 스님의 바라춤 복식과 나비춤 복식이 다르다. 그러나 재가(在家)에서 작법무(作法舞)를 시연할 때에는 바라춤과 나비춤의 복식을 동일하게 한다. 그 이유는 스님들은 사미계나 비구계를 수지하기 때문에 회색 장삼(長衫)과 홍가사(紅袈裟)를 수하(입)고 불교의식무를 시연하지만, 재가는 그러한 절차를 거치지 않았으므로 표현적 및 상징적인 최소한의 복식만 갖추고 작법무를 시연하게 된다. 또한 재가는 동일한 작법무 의상에 고깔을 바꾸어 시연하게 되는데, 나비무 고깔은 승가와 재가가 동일하게 갖추고, 재가자가 바라무를 할 때에는 승가의 삭발염의를 뜻하는 의미로 백색고깔을 바꾸어 쓰고 시연한다.
앞으로 무대 예술로서의 불교의식무를 더욱 연구ㆍ발전시키고, 창작 무용과 불교의식무를 결합시켜 많은 관객들에게 쉽게 다가갈 수 있도록 하여 대중문화적인 예술로 만들어 나아간다면 불교문화를 발전시키는 초석이 될 뿐만 아니라 우리나라 무용을 발전시킬 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

영어초록

Among the Buddhist ritual ceremonies that have come down from the influence of Buddhism, Surukjae is known for its high artistic values of music and dance. For this reason, it is sharing a portion of the whole Korean traditional culture. In addition, the Buddhist ritual dance played in the Surukjae clearly presents the close relationship between Buddhism and art.
In this very research, a study on the origin, and composition of Incheon Surukjae, among many other regional Surukjae, commenced in Incheon area will be discussed in addition to a research on the Bara Dance, which is known as a type of Buddhist ritual dances that are performed at the Incheon Surukjae, in order to understand the thoughts and spirits of South Korean Buddhist Ritual Dance. Furthermore, the author in this research finds it necessary for regaining of the thoughts and the culture of decaying Buddhism. In this sense, this research is executed to provide a fundamental data that is required for an improvement, preservation, and maintenance of Incheon Surukjae and the traditions of Bara Dance by analyzing the movements of Bara Dance and by defining the details of Incheon Surukjae.
Following characteristics of Incheon Surukjae as well as the unique characteristics that are presented in Bara Dance of Incheon Surukjae have been extracted by analyzing the dance and the costume shown in the Bara dance in addition to the origin and the composition Incheon Surukjae.
First of all, although Surukjae are held in many regions, the only area that recognizes it as a cultural property is Incheon.
Second of all, among the types of Bara Dance performed at Incheon Surukjae, Obangjab and Hwaehyangsung Bara Dances are not performed in any other region. For this reason, these two types of Bara Dances may be considered the unique characteristics of Incheon Surukjae.
Third of all, Bara Dance performed at Incheon Surukjaehas a relatively larger dance routines and it is dynamic and fancy when compared to the ones from other regions. The reason for this is because of the wind blowing from sea and inwards to the areas adjacent to the sea that allows Bara to spin quicker with a larger radius. Also, the condition in which the performer needs to spin the Bara in a dynamic way to avoid unintended movements of the Bara due from strong winds during the performance makes its dance different from other regions’.
Fourth of all, at the Incheon Surukjae, costumes of Bara Dance and Butterfly Dance for monks are different from each other just like in other regions. However, in a Jakbeopmu demonstrated at a Buddhist home, costumes used in Bara Dance and Butterfly Dance are the similar to each other. The reason for this is because of the fact that monks tend to practice either the Sramanere-pravrajya or the Bhiksu-pravrajya, thus monks wear the formal monastic robes and the Red Kasa to demonstrate a Buddhist ritual dance. However, as for the Buddhist home, it does not go through this very same process, thus it demonstrates the Jakbeopmu only with the minimum costume required for expressive and symbolic purposes. In addition, a Buddhist home conducts its demonstration with the same Jakbeopmu costume by switching the conical hat in which the conical hat for the Butterfly Dance is similarly prepared both for monk and a Buddhist home, but a Buddhistwears a white conical hat during Bara Dance to project a meaning of the tonsure of monk.
In the future, the Buddhist ritual danceas a performing art must be further studied and developed as well as to bring about a combination of the interpretative dance and the Buddhist ritual dance so that a large number of audiences may easily access it. By doing so, Buddhist ritual dance may not only be developed into a pop-cultural art, which will then act as a foundation for developing Buddhist culture but it will also further develop Korean dances.
