생전예수재 설행의 다양성과 설행 주체 (The diversity and principal agent of practicing the commemorative rites for oneself)

이 글은 생전예수재의 전승 양상을 바탕으로 설행이 다양하게 이루어지고 있음을 살핀 글이다. 특히 설행 주체에 주목하여 어산 스님), 공동체를 중심으로 보고 살폈다. 어산 스님을 설행 주체로 보게 되면, 생전예수재는 범패와 작법무가 중심이 되는 의례로, 특정 집단이 중심이 되는 의례가 된다. 반면 사찰 내부의 모든 구성원을 설행 주체로 보면 생전예수재는 의례의 형식이나 설단과 장엄에 중심을 두지 않고 생전예수재를 설행하는 그 자체가 핵심이 된다. 이 글에서는 명칭, 의례집, 설행 공동체, 어산 스님, 재차의 준수, 금은전 이운, 지화 제작, 조전(造錢) 작업을 생전예수재 전승의 핵심요소로 보고 전승 양상을 살폈다. 생전예수재는 매우 가치있는 의례이다. 어산 스님과 사찰공동체가 힘을 모아 여는 의례로 전국 여러 사찰에서 현재도 전승되고 있다. 생전예수재의 전승 주체를 어떻게 보는가에 따라 생전예수재 무형유산 지정의 방향성이 달라질 수 있고, 앞으로 지속될 생전예수재의 전승에도 영향을 줄 것이다. 무형유산은 국가와 시도의 정책을 기반으로 하고 있으며, 정책 담당자가 의례를 바라보는 인식과 긴밀하게 연결되어 있어 앞으로 생전예수재의 전승 방향에 큰 영향을 줄 것이다. 종목의 지정 방향과 무관하게 생전예수재가 가지고 있는 공동체성의 가치를 진작하는 방안은 반드시 마련되어야 할 것이다.

영어초록

This study clarifies the practice diversity of the commemorative rites for oneself (the performance of The commemorative rites for oneself according to the designated procedures) based on its transmitted aspects (Buddhist rituals for fortune in life and morals after death). Particularly with the focus on the principal agent of its practice, this study examines the actual cases of Eosan monks (Monks performing the music 'Beompae' and the dance 'Babeopmu' in Buddhist rituals) and communities concerned. As Eosan monks are the very principal agent of its practice, the commemorative rites for oneself is a form of ritual consisting mainly of Beompae and Jakbeopmu, performed by a specific group. In contrast, if it is assumed that all members of a temple are the principal agent of practicing it, the key element of the commemorative rites for oneself is practicing the rites itself, with no specific focus on the form of rituals or the preparation ("Seoldan") or decoration ("Jangeom") of the commemorative rites for oneself. This study examines the succeeded aspects, focusing on the key elements of the commemorative rites for oneself: the titles, collection of rituals, practicing communities, Eosan monks, compliance with procedures, paper money necessary for the rites ("Geumeunjeon") Iun, paper flower production, and fake money production. The commemorative rites for oneself are of significant value. This ritual is held cooperatively by Eosan monks and temple communities, being succeeded currently by a number of temples around the country. Depending on who are viewed as the succeeding agents of the commemorative rites for oneself, the direction for its registration as an intangible heritage and the definition for the continuous practice of these rites will be different. Intangible heritages are based on policies of the nation, cities, and provinces. As they are closely related with how policy makers view affected rituals, this view on the principal agents will affect the direction of succeeding the commemorative rites for oneself significantly. Regardless of the direction for specification of the item, ways to enhance the community value of the commemorative rites for oneself need to be established.
