영화 <고려장>에 나타난 권력 구도와 지식의 연관성 고찰 (An Examination of the Connection between Power Structures and Knowledge in the Film )

초록

본고는 <고려장> 속 지배자와 종속자의 관계 양상에서 발생하는 권력의 구도와 지식의 연관성에 관하여 고찰해 보고자 하였다. 이 텍스트는 지배자와 종속자를 양분시키는 권력의 구도가 발생하고 변화하는 과정을 보여준다. 이때 지배자와 종속자 간 권력의 구도는 이를 수행하고 받아들이는 과정에서 인식한 지식을 어떻게 대처하는지에 따라서 전혀 다른 방식으로 드러난다. 이처럼 지배자와 종속자가 각기 마주하는 권력의 구도와 지식의 연관성을 통하여 드러나는 진실의 의미는 다음과 같다.
무당과 십 형제는 각각 규율 권력과 주권 권력을 지닌 지배자의 위치에 해당하며, 이들은 자신들의 권력을 유지하기 위하여 끊임없이 종속자에 해당하는 화전민 부락 사람들에게 강제적인 복종을 강요한다. 그러나 무당과 십 형제는 강제적인 복종을 강요하는 과정에서 그들에게 저항을 시도하는 종속자라는 위험 요소를 대수롭지 않게 여김으로써 사전에 처단할 수 있는 기회를 상실한다. 결국, 지배자로서 무당과 십 형제가 상실한 기회는 위험 요소인 종속자의 저항 시도가 성공함으로써 권력 구도가 바뀌고, 그로 인하여 그들이 죽음을 피할 수 없는 결과로 나타난다.
반면, 구룡은 종속자와 지배자라는 두 가지 위치를 함께 지니고 있으며, 그가 어떠한 위치에 있느냐에 따라서 전혀 다른 모습을 보여준다. 먼저 구룡이 무당과 십 형제로부터 강제적인 복종을 강요당하는 종속자의 위치일 경우 권력의 구도를 바꾸기 위하여 끊임없이 저항을 시도한다. 그러나 구룡이 화전민 부락 사람들과의 관계 양상에서 지배자의 위치에 해당할 경우 철저하게 그들을 억압하고 폭력을 행사하는 이중적인 모습을 드러낸다. 이처럼 구룡의 경우 종속자와 지배자라는 두 가지 위치를 지니고 있음에도 불구하고, 결국 지배자로서 지니고 있던 모든 것을 잃게 되는 순간 종속자의 위치만 남게 된다. 그러나 구룡은 지배자인 무당과 십 형제에게 끊임없이 시도했던 저항을 성공시킴으로써 권력 구도가 영원하지 않다는 진실과 마주한다. 즉, 종속자인 구룡 스스로 권력 구도를 무너뜨림으로써 결코 지식과 떨어질 수 없으며, 나아가 얼마든지 변화를 이끌어낼 수 있음을 증명한다. 이처럼 <고려장>은 권력 구도와 지식의 연관성, 나아가 그 안에 감추어진 진실의 의미를 확인할 수 있다는 점에서 가치 있는 텍스트라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

The present study seeks to examine the connection between power structures and knowledge generated by the relationship between the ruler and the ruled in the film <Goryeojang> (directed by Kim Ki-young; 1963). This text shows the process through which the power structure that divides the ruler and the ruled comes into being and changes. Here, the power structure between the ruler and the ruled differs completely according to how one responds to the knowledge perceived in the process of practicing and accepting that structure. The significance of the truth that emerges from the connection between the power structure and knowledge that the ruler and the ruled each face is as follows.
The female shaman and the ten brothers are rulers possessing disciplinary power and sovereign power, respectively. In order to maintain their power, these characters ceaselessly force obedience from the slash-and-burn farmers living in a village, who are the ruled. However, in the process of thus forcing obedience on the villagers, the shaman and the ten brothers lose opportunities to prevent resistance from the ruled by disregarding the danger of the villagers’ attempts at resistance. In the end, the chances thus missed by the shaman and the ten brothers as rulers affect changes in the power structure as the villagers’ attempts at resistance succeed and, at the same time, lead to irreversible results as the rulers meet with death.
In contrast, Gu-ryeong is both rules and is ruled and exhibits very different aspects according to his position. First, when he is a member of the ruled forced to obey the shaman and the ten brothers, this figure unceasingly attempts resistance in order to change the power structure. However, when Gu-ryeong is the ruler in his relationship with the villagers, he ruthlessly oppresses and inflicts violence on them, thus exhibiting a dual nature. Although this character thus possesses a dual status in both ruling and being ruled, the moment he loses everything that he has possessed as a ruler, he becomes nothing but a member of the ruled. However, by successfully executing resistance against the shaman and the ten brothers, or the rulers, which he has ceaselessly attempted, Gu-ryeong comes to face the truth that power structures are not perpetual. In other words, a member of the ruled, this figure proves that knowledge is inseparable and that he can amply bring about change by breaking down power structures himself. In that the connection between power structures and knowledge and, furthermore, the significance of the truth hidden within them can be confirmed, <Goryeojang> is a valuable text.
