초록

이 연구는 박완서의 「엄마의 말뚝」 연작에 나타난 잠 모티프에 주목하여 가부장적 근대의 성취와 한계를 살펴보는 동시에 이로부터 나아가는 가능성을 살펴본다. 말뚝이 근대적 성취를 표상한다면, 잠은 이에 반하는 자연, 비행동, 비생산을 의미한다는 사실에 기초하여 잠의 비가시화와 가시화가 함축하고 있는 의미를 천착한다. 잠의 비가시화는 가부장적 근대로의 포획과 연동되고 잠의 가시화는 이에 대한 비판과 일탈을 매개한다는 사실을 밝혀냄으로써 잠이 함축하는 가부장적 근대에 대한 반담론과 대안적 가능성을 규명한다.
「엄마의 말뚝」 1편에서는 근대도시에 말뚝을 박는 과정과 잠의 비가시화를 살펴본다. 과거를 반복하는 무지와 야만의 전근대적 공동체로부터 일탈하여 문명도시로 편입하여 이루어낸 근대적 성취를 주목하되, 잠의 비가시화를 통해 그 한계를 읽어낸다. 개인의 노력에 기초한 성취라는 근대적 이상의 담지자이자 이를 실현한 주체인 엄마의 궤적에 잠이 비가시화되어 있다는 사실을 초점화함으로써 아들의 성공이라는 미래를 위해 도구화된 엄마의 입지를 비롯한 가부장적 근대의 결여지점을 추적한다.
「엄마의 말뚝」 2편에서는 악몽으로 가시화되기 시작하는 잠 소동을 매개로 허물어진 말뚝과의 대면을 살펴 본다. 86세 엄마의 수술후유증인 불면과 악몽을 통해 30년 전의 전쟁기에 겪은 아들의 죽음에 대한 뒤늦은 분노와 애도의 과정을 천착한다. 악몽은 종교에 귀의한 노년 혹은 의료와 보호의 대상인 노년이 아니라, 허물어진 말뚝에 대한 분노와 원한을 표출하는 주체로서의 엄마를 드러내는 중요한 경로임을 살핀다. 나아가, 분노의 출구 역할을 하는 딸의 개입을 통해 아들의 죽음에 대한 애도를 실현하는 과정을 드러낸다.
「엄마의 말뚝」 3편에서는 잠이 엄마의 임종과 그 이후를 매개한다는 사실에 토대하여 근대적 삶과 근대에 대한 반담론의 가능성을 살펴 보았다. 잠으로 일관하는 엄마의 말년과 임종의 의미를 약화시키는 에피소드들에서 이성적 주체의 자율성과 이에 기반한 근대적 성취에 대한 균열을 읽어내는 한편, 무덤의 임시말뚝에 기입된 엄마의 함자에서 죽음 이후에도 연속되는 잠의 위상을 살펴 본다. 말뚝의 최종심급인 비석에 새겨진 몸 기자, 잘 숙자라는 이름의 부각에서 가부장적 근대라는 악력으로부터의 일탈과 근대를 이상으로 삼은 삶의 재조명을 천착한다.

영어초록

This study analyses from Park Wan-seo's achievement and limitations in overcoming patriarchal modernity by paying attention to the sleep motif in her serial novel, 『Mother’s Stake』. While her stake represents modern achievements, sleep means nature, non-action, and non-production; this study adheres to the implications of sleep's invisibility and visualization based on such a fact. By finding that the novel’s in-visualization of sleep is linked to being captured by patriarchal modernity. where as visualization of sleep mediates criticism and deviance from it, this study can identify antithesis and alternative possibilities for the patriarchal modernity that sleep implies.
In 『Mother’s Stake I』, this study look at the process of mom’s putting stake in a modern city(Seoul) and the in-visualization of sleep. Attention is paid to the modern achievement achieved by incorporating the past into a civilized city, deviating from the pre-modern community of stupidity and barbarism, with meaninful finding that the process has its own limitations. The mom is characterised as a supporter and a executor of a modern ideal of rational achievement based on individual effort, but she has little time to sleep which means her whole life has been committed for her son’s future of secular success. The chapter 2 will focus to trace out such processes and tries to find out failure and shortcomings of modern project of development.
The Chater 3, which deals with 『Mother’s Stake II』, tries to analyse the collapsed stake from Mom’s of sleep disturbance that begins to become visible due to nightmares. The 86-year-old mom's postoperative perimortem, "Insomnia" and "Nightmare," casts a belated process of anger and condolences on her son's death during the Korean War of 30 years ago. Nightmare is not caused by her old age of turning to religion nor by senile weakness in need of medical care and protection. It represents an important way to reveal her own self as a person expressing anger and resentment against the collapsed stake. Furthermore, it reveals the process of realizing condolences for the death of a son through the intervention of his daughter, who acts as an outlet for anger.
In the Chater 3 for 『Mother’s Stake III』, the possibility of counter-narratives on modern lives and modernity are traced based on the fact that sleep can mediate the mom's death and her aftermath. Mom has slept all day long in her last years, and there happen several episodes which weaken the meaning of her death. This study tries to read out some critical cracks in the autonomy of rational subjects and modern achievements based on them, while it pays special attention to mom’s name which is carved on her gravestone “Ki” and “Sook” which has meaning of ‘body’ and ‘sleep’ each. Park’s serial nover of 『Mom’s Stake』 casts some significant insights of reflection for deviations from the grip of patriarchal modernity and the re-thinking of life beyond modernity.
