마주침을 둘러싼 신화와 노동소설의 문법 ‑ 1980년대 후반 공지영, 방현석, 김한수의 데뷔작을 중심으로 (The myths surrounding the ‘encounter’ and a rule of labor novels - Focusing on the debut works of Gong Ji-young, Bang Hyun-seok, and Kim Han-soo in the late 1980s)

초록

1987년 전후, 창작과 비평(연구) 양쪽 모두에서 한국소설의 지배적인 장르로 인식되었던 노동소설은 1990년대 초반 현실 사회주의의 몰락과 함께, 짧은 전성기가 무색할 만큼 급격하게 청산·망각된다. 그러나 이러한 급격한 청산과 망각은 그것을 직간접적으로 경험한 사람들에게 심리적 외상으로 남아 귀환하기 마련이다. 최근, 1980-90년대 문학에 대한 연구자들의 폭발적인 관심과 일련의 연구에서 감지되는 어떤 공통된 정동은 당대의 급격한 청산과 망각으로부터 비롯된, ‘억압된 것의 귀환’처럼 보인다는 점에서 각별한 주목과 관찰이 요청된다. 본고에서는 이 공통된 정동을 이질적인 것들을 접속시키려는 ‘마주침의 동역학’으로 규정함으로써 이 ‘마주침의 동역학’으로부터 추동된 1980-90년대 한국문학 연구의 성과와 한계를 87년 6월항쟁 직후 발표된 노동소설에 대한 재해석을 통해 가늠해보고자 하였다.
항쟁 직후 발표된 노동소설에서 특히 주목되는 점은 지금/여기의 연구자들뿐만 아니라 당대의 노동소설 역시 ‘마주침’이라는 테마에 빈틈없이 긴박되어 있었다는 사실이다. 1988년에 발표된 공지영의 「동트는 새벽」, 방현석의 「내딛는 첫발은」, 김한수의 「성장」 등은 1980년대 노동소설의 이념적 도식성에 대한 일반화된 비판과는 달리 ‘학출’과 노동자, 선진 노동자와 일반 노동자, 구세대와 신세대 등 다양한 ‘사회적 세력’들 간의 마주침을 서사의 구성적 토대이자 주체 각성의 계기로 활용하고 있다. 그런 의미에서 1980년대 노동소설은 최근 1980-90년대 연구에서 확인되는 ‘마주침의 동역학’과 그로부터 비롯되는 복원과 애도의 서사, 그 원본에 해당한다고 볼 수 있겠다.
물론 본고에서 다룬 노동소설에서의 마주침이란 결국 일시적이었고, 제대로 응고되지 못한 채 ‘체제’에 흡수되었다는 점에서 그 한계가 분명하다. 그러나 단지 다양한 사회세력들 간의 마주침-응고에 주목할 것이 아니라, 그 마주침을 통해 각각의 원자들이 보다 잘 식별될 수 있었다는 점을 고려할 때에야 비로소 그 항쟁의 시간 동안 우발했거나 혹은 우발하지 않았던 마주침의 의미 또한 거리감을 갖고 평가할 수 있게 될 것이다.

영어초록

Around 1987, labor novels, which were recognized as the dominant genre of Korean novels in both creation and criticism, are suddenly forgotten in a short heyday with the fall of real socialism in the early 1990s. However, such rapid liquidation and forgetfulness are bound to return as psychological trauma to those who have experienced it directly or indirectly. In recent years, the explosive interest of researchers in literature in the 1980s and 90s and some common affects in a series of studies needs special attention and observation in that it looks like the ‘return of the oppressed’ from the rapid liquidation and oblivion of the 1980s and 1990s. In this paper, this common affect is defined as the ‘The dynamics of encountering’ that tries to connect heterogeneous things. In addition, this study attempted to assess the achievements and limitations of Korean literature research in the 1980s and 1990s, driven by the ‘The dynamics of encountering’, through a reinterpretation of a labor novel published immediately after the June Uprising in 1987.
What is particularly noticeable in the labor novels released immediately after the June Uprising is the fact that not only the researchers here and now, but also the labor novels of the time were tightly tackled by the theme of ‘encountering’. Unlike the generalized criticism of the ideological schematicity of labor novels in the 1980s, Gong Ji-young's “Dawn”, Bang Hyun-seok’s “The first step we take”, and Kim Han-soo’s “Growth” uses the confrontation between various “social forces” as a constituent foundation of the narrative and an opportunity for awakening. In this sense, it can be said that the labor novels of the 1980s correspond to the archetypes of ‘the dynamics of encountering’ identified in recent studies in the 1980s and 90s.
Of course, the limit is clear in that the encounters in the labor novels covered in this paper were temporary in the end and were absorbed into the ‘system’ without being properly solidified. However, it is not only when we pay attention to the encounter-solidification between various social forces, but only when we consider that each atom could be better identified through the encounter, We will be able to objectively evaluate encounters that occurred or did not occur during the time of the uprising.
