김은국의 『순교자』론 ―‘전해들은 자’의 순교, 이산 작가의 글쓰기 (The Martyred of Kim, Eun-kook : The Martyr, the Writing of Diaspora Author)

초록

김은국의 『순교자』는 한국문학사상 최초로 노벨문학상 후보로 추천된 작품이다. 노벨문학상으로 주목을 끌었다는 사실을 언급하지 않더라도 한국전쟁이라는 국지적 소재를 다루면서도 세계 독자들의 감동을 이끌어내었다는 점에서 『순교자』를 재고찰해야 할 필요성은 충분해진다.
그러나 『순교자』에 대한 기존의 논의는 제목의 영향으로 기독교문학으로서의 의의를 밝히는 데에만 집중되어 있었다. 따라서 본 연구는 『순교자』의 원작자 김은국이 이산자라는 점과 연결시켜 작품의 의미구조를 분석하여 작품의 새로운 의의를 도출해보고자 한다.
이산자의 입장에서 불확실한 여정의 근거지인 고국을 잃어버릴 수도 있다는 불안은 전쟁이라는 극한적 상황으로 상징화된다. 그의 이산을 생산한 근원, 그것이 바로 전쟁이었기 때문이다. 이산 작가 김은국은 한국전쟁을 감각적으로 재현하지 않는다. 전쟁은 매우 추상적인 형태의 광기로 전달된다. 『순교자』에서 사건은 감각적이고 구체적인 묘사가 아닌, 편지, 전언, 소문이라는 간접적인 방식으로 진행되고 있다. 이 전언의 설정으로 인해, 김은국의 『순교자』는 객관적이며 냉정한 이산자의 시선이라는 미적 거리를 획득한다.
『순교자』는 실존적 극한 상황 아래 전쟁의 생존자인 우리 모두가 ‘피난민’이라고 말한다. 『순교자』의 내적 서사를 분석한 결과 ‘순교자’는 ‘敎’, 즉 가르침을 위해 죽는 자가 아니라 가르침을 추구하는 방법으로서의 ‘殉’을 실천하는 자라는 결론에 이를 수 있었다. 김은국은 자신이 이산자로서 ‘전해들은’ 고국의 진실을 세계에 전하는 의무를 실천함으로써 ‘순교자’가 될 수 있었던 것이다.

영어초록

The Martyred(『순교자』) of Kim, Eun-kook is recommended as a candidate for the Nobel Prize for the first time in history of Korean literature. The Martyred is required to be reconsidered in term of leading the emotion of the world readers as well as dealing with local material such as the Korean war without mentioning the fact that Nobel Prize draws the attention. Because The Martyred work has directionality for the globalization of the Korea Literature works. This study was started from the hypothesis that a combination of global universality of this work and Korean locality was possible because Kim, Eun-kook, separated person describes Korean War. Anxiety that separated person may lose the country based on an uncertain journey is symbolized as an extreme situation of war. Because the source to produce his separation is just war. The Martyred can be called literature of war which was possible because Kim, Eun-kook was a separated person in the circumstances of the '60s.
In previous study, however, Diaspora identity of Kim, Eun-Kook is slightly overlooked or being processed in the analysis of the work. The existing discussion concerning The Martyred is concentrated as a Christian literature by the influence of the title.
The Korea war is not specific subject to reproduce tastefully to Kim, Eun-Kook who is a separated person. The war is passed with the madness of very abstract form. The case in The Martyred is being processed with the indirect way such as the letters, messages and rumors, not the sensual and concrete descriptions. The narrative force of message or letter in The Martyred of Kim, Eun-kook is very important. Due to set-up of this message, the work of Kim, Eun-kook gets aesthetic distance by the objective and cold eyes. The Martyred says we are all refugees who are survivors under extreme conditions of an existential war. In addition, this work conveys the teachings for survivors who are refugees about how to live and this is the topic that the writer of Diaspora, Kim, Eun-kook pursuits and reaches through the writing.
In the result of internal narrative of The Martyred, the following conclusion could be reached that ‘he Martyred’ is the person to practice ‘殉’ (Die) as the method to pursue teaching, not the person to die for the ‘敎’ (teaching).
Kim, Eun-kook could be ‘The Martyred’ by practicing the responsibility to convey their teachings as a separated person to the country.
