염상섭 소설의 전쟁 미망인 (The War Widows in Yeom Sang-seop's Novels)

초록

‘리얼리즘’과 ‘민족문학’은 해방 이후에도 여전히 염상섭의 소설들을 지탱하고 있는 두 기둥으로 기능하고 있다. 이 글은 이러한 문제의식을 가지고 출발했고 그러한 문제의식을 논증하기 위해 연작 소설에 해당하는 두 장편인 『미망인』과 『화관』을 집중적인 분석 대상으로 소환했다.
무엇보다 이 두 작품을 민족문학과 리얼리즘의 해석 코드로 접근하게 만든 가장 중요한 이유는 그 두 장편이 전후 한국사회의 가장 심각한 사회적 증상 가운데하나였던 ‘전쟁 미망인’의 문제를 서사의 전면에 소환하여 적극적인 애정과 관심을가지고서 그들의 운명의 추이를 추적하고 있기 때문이다. 전후 한국사회에서 전쟁미망인들은 한국전쟁의 직접적인 피해자였다. 따라서 이들을 지원하고 보호하는것은 국가 사회가 짊어져야 할 마땅한 책임이었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 당시 사회구성원들은 전쟁 미망인들을 차별과 배제의 대상으로 타자화했다.
그 연장선에서 당시 사회구성원들은 전후의 사회적 혼란이나 무질서의 책임을전가할 수 있는 희생양이나 완충지대를 필요로 했다. 그 희생양이나 완충지대로지목된 대상은 당시 한국사회의 권력 위계에서 최하위 포식자의 자리에 위치했던전쟁 미망인들이었다. 전쟁 미망인들이야말로 사회 구성원들의 심리적 충격이나공격성의 독소나 악취를 흡수하거나 완화시켜 줄 수 있는 가장 만만한 집단이었기때문이다.
등단 이후 일관되게 리얼리스트로서의 세계관과 창작 방법을 작가적 화두로 삼아 온 염상섭에게 이와 같은 전쟁 미망인의 문제는 결코 외면해서도 안 되고 외면할 수도 없는 문제였다. 『미망인』과 『화관』 두 연작 장편은 바로 그러한 작가적 관심을 적극적으로 반영하고 있는 작품들이다. 그 두 장편을 통해 염상섭은 당시 전쟁 미망인을 방치하는 것은 국가·사회의 직무유기이며, 따라서 그들을 적극적으로 지원하고 보호해야 하는 일은 국가·사회적 책무임을 환기하고자 하는 문제의식을 반영하고 있다. 그리고 그러한 사회적 책임을 이행하는 구체적인 방법이나 해법으로 전쟁 미망인의 결혼을 제시하고 있다.

영어초록

It is not easy to deny the criticism that Yeom Sang-seop's novels, especially full-length novels, after liberation in 1945 are relatively less dense in style or the perfection of the narrative compared to his previous works. Nevertheless, his novels after liberation are still working in the fields of realism and ethnic minorities functioning as two pillars supporting his literature. This paper started with this sense of problem and two novels 『The Widow』, 『The Wreath』 are called out for intensive analysis to demonstrate the awareness.
Above all, the most important factor leading the two works to the interpretation code of ethnic literature and realism is to summon the issue of ‘war widows’ to the front of the narrative which was one of the most serious social symptoms in the post-war Korean society and track the changes of their fate. Supporting and protecting war widows in post-war Korean society was a proper responsibility for the nation. Nevertheless, the work was forced to fall behind in the priorities. However, despite such realistic circumstances, it could not but be a problem to otherize these war widows, who are direct victims of the Korean War, as objects of exclusion and discrimination. Nevertheless, members of the society at that time consistently treated war widows with discrimination and coldness.
In that extension, members of Korean society at the time needed a scapegoat or buffer zone where the responsibility of social chaos or disorder caused by the degradation of social customs or sexual ethics could be shifted. The victims or objects targeted as buffer zone were war widows who were at the bottom of the predators in the Korean social hierarchy. It was because war widows were the easiest group to absorb or alleviate the psychological shock or toxins and odors of aggression from members of the society.
For Yeom Sang-seop, who consistently used his view of the world as a realist and creative method as a writer's topic since his debut, the issue of war widows like this was something he should never disregard or could not turn away. The works 『The Widow』 and 『The Wreath』 actively reflect such writer's interest. Through those two works, Yeom Sang-seop reflected his awareness of the problem that leaving war widows unattended is a dereliction of duty for the state and society and actively supporting and protecting them was a national and social responsibility. And it suggests marriage of war widows as a concrete way or solution to fulfill such social responsibilities.
