초록

이 논문은 이진상(1818-1886)이 편찬한 춘추학 저술인 『춘추집전』과 『춘추익전』 을 통해 당시 척사파 유학자들이 가지고 있었던 역사의식을 살펴보려는데 연구의 목표가 있다. 이진상은 조선 성리학의 6대가 가운데 한 사람으로 지목될 정도로 사상적으로 독자적 영역을 지닌 학자였다. 이진상은 주자와 이황의 학문을 조술하면서도 선진의 경학으로까지 나아가려고 하였다.
그의 학문적 성과 가운데 주목되는 것은 거질의 『춘추』 연구서의 편찬이다. 『춘추집전』에서는 『춘추』에 대한 전문을 수집하고 안설을 덧붙여 경세經世와 존군부尊君 父의 대의를 밝혔다. 『춘추익전』에서는 춘추 전후의 시대사 편찬을 통해 존주尊周와대일통大㊀統의 대의를 천명하였다. 이진상은 사실에 대한 측면은 『좌전』의 기록을취하고 의리적인 측면에서는 『호전』의 기록을 취하여 책을 편찬하였다. 이는 조선 중후기 주자학자들이 『좌전』을 위주로 하면서도 『호전』을 수용한 것의 연장선상에 있다.
다만 정조 이후 중국으로부터 고증학 서적이 도입되고 독자적인 경학 연구가 진행되면서 『좌전』 수용의 흐름이 정조와 일부 유신 사이에서 나타났다. 이진상은 결과적으로 이러한 흐름에서 다시 『호전』 위주로 갔다고 할 수 있다.
경학의 측면에서 본다면 이진상의 춘추학은 청대 고증학의 경전에 대한 주석 연구를따라가지 못하고 있다. 이진상은 『호전』을 위주로 하면서도 안설을 통해 자신의 의견을 제기하고 있으며, 『호전』의 해석 가운데 경문의 뜻에 부합하지 않는 부분을 비판하였다. 춘추학사적 측면에서 본다면 『호전』에 대한 비판과 변화 모색이라고 할 수 있다.
이러한 변화가 필요하였던 현실적 배경에는 당시 제국주의 침략이 있었다. 이진상은 지방의 한미한 유학자이었지만 시대적 소명의식을 가지고 있었다. 이진상의 위정척사적 행동의 이론적 배경에는 춘추학이 있었다. 이진상이 생애의 말기에 『춘추집전』 과 『춘추익전』를 통해 경세의식과 존주의식을 보이려고 한 것은 이러한 위기에 대한학문적 대응이었다. 이진상은 자신의 척사적 입장이 『춘추』 의리에 닿아 있음을 『춘추』 연구를 통해 표방함으로써 경학적 측면에서 행동의 정당성을 뒷받침하였다.

영어초록

This study analyzes the historical awareness of Confucian scholars from the rejecting heterodoxy group (cheoksapa) based on the <Chunchu jipjeon)> and <Chunchu ikjeon>, writings on the <Spring and Autumn Annals>, compiled by Yi Jinsang (1818-1886). Yi Jinsang was an independent scholar who has been hailed as one of the six masters of Joseon Neo-Confucianism. Yi propagated the study of Zhou Xi and Yi Hwang and even pursued the study of early Confucian Classics (gyeonghak).
The highlight of Yi Jinsang’s academic achievements was his compilation of books on the <Spring and Autumn Annals>. While Yi emphasized the great cause of statecraft (gyeongse) and respect for king and father (jongunbu) in his work, <Chunchu jipjeon> created by collecting the main texts of <Spring and Autumn Annals> and adding his commentaries, he highlighted the great cause of respecting the Zhoudynasty (jonju) and great unity (daeiltong) in <Chunchu ikjeon>, a compilation of history before and after the Spring and Autumn Period.
Yi’s books were motivated by his acceptance of the records found in the <Commentary of Zuo (Zuo Zhuan)> as pertained to the notion of truth and in <Hu Anguo’s Commentary (Hu Zhuan)> as pertained to righteousness. This was an extension of the Neo-Confucian scholars of mid and late Joseon’s acceptance of <Hu Anguo’s Commentary (Hu Zhuan)> as an accompaniment to the traditionally accepted <Commentary of Zuo (Zuo Zhuan)>. However, there emerged a trend towards the renewed acceptance of the <Commentary of Zuo (Zuo Zhuan)> among King Jeongjo and some of his meritorious subjects. This trend emerged as books for the bibliographical study of Chinese classics were introduced from China, and the independent study of Chinese classics became more popular. Yi Jinsang’s study can be regarded as a throwback to the study of <Hu Anguo’s Commentary (Hu Zhuan)>.
Viewed from the standpoint of the study of Chinese classics, Yi’s study of the <Spring and Autumn Annals> did not keep up with the study of annotations of Chinese classics established during the Qing period in terms of bibliographical studies. While his study was mainly based on <Hu Anguo’s Commentary (Hu Zhuan)>, Yi nevertheless revealed his own opinions through commentaries. He criticized aspects of the interpretation of <Hu Anguo’s Commentary (Hu Zhuan)> that did not coincide with the meaning found in Chinese classics texts. In terms of the study of the <Spring and Autumn Annals>, Yi criticized <Hu Anguo’s Commentary (Hu Zhuan)> and searched for alternatives.
The necessity for this change in ideology was rooted in the imperialist invasions of the time. Although Yi was a local Confucian scholar, he had a clear awareness of the times. He either participated in or expressed his support to people’s request for Jeong Gu’s registration to Confucius at the State Shrine (munmyo) to conduct a rite, opposed the eradication of private academies (seowon), and supported the submission of the Memorial of Ten Thousand Men from Gyeongsang Province (Yeongnam maninso). He also raised a righteous army in Seongju when the Unyo incident emerged in 1876. The theoretical background to Yi Jinsang’s actions in support of the rejection of heterodoxy (cheoksa) was rooted in his study of the <Spring and Autumn Annals>. Yi’s exhibition of respect for the Zhou dynasty (jonju) and its statecraft (gyeongse) based on the <Chunchu jipjeon)> and <Chunchu ikjeon> during the latter period of his life can also be seen as his academic response to the ongoing national crisis. Yi Jinsang sought to justify his actions taken under the guise of his study of Chinese classics by claiming that his position of rejecting heterodoxy (cheoksa) was connected to the righteousness embedded in the <Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunchu)>.
