초록

This paper is a review of Manu Song ChangGeun’s Ph.D dissertation, “The Pauline idea of salvation by faith on bases of Jewish conception” which was written in 1931. Manu is not only one of the founders HanKook Theological Seminary (now Hanshin University) but also an important person in the early days of the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea. Although his dissertation is not free from the methodological and hermeneutic problem of the 1930s, contains insights in line with a significant portion of today’s Pauline scholarship.
Firstly, to find the origin of Paul’s theology, he adopts Jewish legalism which was formed in the Second Temple Period. He insists that Paul’s concept of salva-tion is the result of this legalism, an idea which is represented in modern scholar-ship.
Secondly, to interpret ‘justification by faith,’ he connects it to Jesus’ spiritual communion and moral revival which is a main point of Minjung theology.
Thirdly, his view of Law in Paul’s thought is very similar to views held in modern scholarship. He insists that the idea of law and moral values in Paul is valid. However the notion of the cosmic ubiquity of sin challenges the notion of eschatological justice. So an experience of the death and resurrection of Christ should bring all the Christians to the awareness of a new creation. The notion of the work of the Spirit of God work should be in harmony with the work of the human spirit.
Finally, he insists that a unification with the Spirit of Christ is the main point of Paul’s theory of salvation. Manu’s conclusion is consistent with the new trends in research.
Manu’s research shows us that the study of Pauline theology should not be focused on one point but on a variety of points, for example, an understanding of God and Christ, God’s salvation through Jesus Christ, the Easter event and its implications, the second coming of Christ and salvation.
