초록

김득련의 『환구음초』는 그가 1896년 4월 1일에 한양을 출발하여 10월 20일 복명하기까지의 민영환(閔泳煥)을 따라 러시아황제의 대관식에 참석하고 오면서 쓴 기행시집으로 사행 과정에서 지은 작품을 모아 사행시로 엮은 것이다. 여기에는 총 111제(題) 136수(首)로 사행의 일정대로 작품을 싣고 있다. 사행이 중국, 일본, 미국, 영국, 네델란드, 독일, 러시아, 몽골의 8개국을 7개월동안 여행하는 것이었는데 사행기록을 담당했던 김득련이 그동안의 견문과 감상을 한시로 옮긴 것이다. 『환구음초』에는 김득련이 지닌 문학적 재능과 시적 감수성이 작품 전반에 나타나며 여행과정에서 보았던 도시와 도로, 교통과 통신, 철도와 기차, 건물과 호텔, 영화와 연극 등을 담았다. 박물관과 미술관, 도서관, 예배당, 전화기나 전등과 같은 전기 시설, 동물원과 식물원, 천문대와 조선소 등을 방문하여 그 내용을 시로 기록하였다. 주로 비유적 표현을 사용하여 황홀하고 신기한 경험을 집약적으로 설명하고자 하였다. 아울러 『환구음초』는 우리 한문학사의 마지막 시기에 이루어진 작품이라는 점에서 의미가 있다. 한시와 사행이라는 전통과 새로운 문화적 환경의 경험이라는 대비적 요소를 중심으로 19세기 말의 격동기 조선의 지식인 김득련이 자신이 체험한 서양문명과 그에 대한 인식을 작품 전반에 선명하게 그리고 있다. 또한 이국에서의 경험을 서술하면서 그속에 그가 접한 서양의 문화 체험과 충격을 사실적으로 형상화되어 있다.
여기에는 19세기 말의 격동기 조선의 지식인의 일면을 보여주었다. 그가 경험한 서양문명과 제도를 통해 그가 바라보는 신문명에 대한 인식과 낙후된 조선의 환경과 시대에 대한 복잡한 심경을 짐작할 수 있다. 특히 서구의 발전된 문물을 접하면서 문명 담론을 형성하는 동시에 낙후된 조국의 현실을 되돌아보면서 갖게된 다양한 심정을 알 수 있다. 그러나 서구 체험과 견문(見聞)의 기록인 김득련의 『환구음초』는 조선이 새로운 근대 문명을 만나고 확장시키는 계기가 되는 발판으로 작용하였다.

영어초록

Hwanjinkeumcho by Kim Deuk Nyon is a traveler's collection of poems he wrote during the period between April 1, 1896, when he started from the then capital Hanyang, and October 20, 1896, when he submitted a report of his mission - he accompanied Min Yeong Hwan (閔泳煥) on the travel for the coronation of the then Russian emperor. The collection consists of quatrains he wrote during his private travel. It contains a total of 111 topics (題) and 136 poems (首) according to the travel schedule. As for 7 months of the private travel around 8 countries (China, Japan, America, Britain, the Netherlands, Germany, Russia, Mongolia), he in charge of recording the travel expressed the experiences and knowledge, and the impressions in the Chinese poems.
The overall work shows his literary talent and poetic sensibility and contains the cities, roads, transportation and communication, railways and trains, buildings and hotels, films and plays, etc. he saw during the travel. They visited museum, art gallery, library, church, electrical facility (e.g. telephone, light), zoo and botanical garden, observatory and dockyard, etc. and recorded the details in the poems. He intended to describe the blissful and novel experiences intensively by mainly using figurative expressions.
In addition, it is significant in that it was created at the end of our history of Chinese literature. With the tradition - Chinese poetry and private travel - and experiences of new cultural environments as the center (the tradition and the experiences of the new cultural environments are an contradistinctive element), Kim Deuk Nyon (the intellectual of the turbulent Chosun Dynasty at the end of the 19th century) is vividly portraying the Western civilization he experienced and his perceptions of it in the overall work. Also in the description of his experiences in the foreign countries, his experiences of the western culture and the culture shock are realistically represented as imagery.
Here one side of an intellectual of the turbulent Dynasty then was shown. Through his experiences of the Western civilization and systems, we can guess at his complex state of mind about his perceptions of the new civilization and about the backward Chosun environment and age. Notably, He not only forms a civilization discourse while encountering the Western advanced culture, but we can know about various feelings he came to have while he reflected on the reality of his backward homeland. But the work, a record of his experiences and knowledge (見聞) of the West, served as a stepping stone to Chosun encountering new modern civilization and furthering it.
