〈변강쇠가〉의 죽음을 중심으로 한 서사 논리 연구 (A Study on the Narrative Logic Centered on the Death of Byeongangsoe-ga)

초록

이 글은 〈변강쇠가〉 서사의 논리가 어떻게 구성되어 있는지를 살펴본 것이다. 우리 문학에서 〈변강쇠가〉는 성적 내용이나 죽음과 관련된 내용 등 파격적인 성격으로 주목받아 왔으며 해석상 많은 논란이 있는 작품이었다. 특히 남성 인물의 죽음과 그 원인에 대한 다양한 해석이 이루어져 왔다. 또한 〈변강쇠가〉는 창(唱)이 전승되지 않는 실전 판소리인데, 실전된 이유가 작품의 내용과 형식의 특징과 관련되어 논해졌다.
이 글에서는 〈변강쇠가〉 서사의 논리 구성 과정을 가추법으로 접근하고자 한다. 가추법은 개연적 규칙을 세우고 이에 따라 어떤 확실한 결과를 끌어내고, 이를 통해 다시 개연적 규칙을 검증하는 방법이다. 서사 초반 월경촌에서 옹녀의 여섯 남편과 옹녀를 성적으로 탐했던 남성들은 모두 죽는다. 이를 바탕으로 ‘남성이 옹녀를 성적으로 취하거나 탐하면 죽는다.’는 규칙을 설정하고 서사가 개진되지만, 옹녀가 강쇠를 만남으로써 이 규칙과는 정반대의 상황이 펼쳐진다. 그러나 결과적으로 강쇠 또한 비참하게 죽고 옹녀를 도와 강쇠의 시신을 치상하려던 일곱 남성마저 죽게 되면서 이 규칙은 서사 세계 내에서 유효한 것으로 강조된다.
서술자나 등장인물을 통해 옹녀와 접한 모든 남성의 죽음이 옹녀로 인한 것이라고 규정짓고 있으나, 강쇠의 죽음은 장승들의 판결에서 직접 드러나듯이 강쇠 스스로 저지른 난봉짓에 대한 대가임이 분명하다. 그런데도 강쇠와 일곱 남성의 시신을 처리하는 대목에서는 강쇠마저 옹녀를 탐하다 원통하게 죽어간 협기 있는 남자로 규정하는 비논리적 언술이 펼쳐진다. 또한 옹녀를 탐하고도 죽지 않은 뎁득이로 인해, 남성들의 죽음과 옹녀 간의 새로운 규칙이 필요한데도 이는 묵과된다. 〈변강쇠가〉는 서사 세계에서 진행되는 사건과 이로 인한 변화를 논리적으로 전달하기보다는 이야기 초반에 수립된 서사 규칙을 무리하게 강요하며 경계(儆戒)적 목소리로 마무리한다. 이러한 서사의 논리 구성은 독자(청자)로 하여금 작품을 온전히 수용하는데 어렵게 만들며, 실전하게 된 원인으로 작용하였을 것이다.

영어초록

This article examines the composition of Byeongangsoe-ga’s narrative logic. In Korean literature, Byeongangsoe-ga has been noted for its unconventional characteristic, such as sexual content and content related to death, and it is a work with much controversy in terms of interpretation. There have been various interpretations, especially regarding the death of the male character and its cause. In addition, Byeongangsoe-ga has now lost its performance, and the reason for loss of its performance has been discussed in relation to the characteristics of the work's content and form.
In this article, I would like to approach the logical composition process of the narrative of Byeongangsoe-ga using the abductive method. The abduction is a method of establishing a probable rule, deriving a certain result based on it, and then verifying the probable rule again through this. In the early part of the narrative, in Wolgyeongchon, Ongnyeo’s six husbands and the men who sexually coveted her all die. Based on this, the rule that “Men who sexually take or covet Ongnyeo will die.” is established and the narrative progresses, but when Ongnyeo meets Gangsoe, a situation unfolds that is the exact opposite of the rule. However, as a result, Gangsoe also dies miserably, and the seven men who tried to help Ongnyeo bury Gangsoe’s corpse also die, emphasizing that the rule is valid within the narrative world.
Although the narrator and the characters determine that all the men’s deaths were caused by Ongnyeo, it is clear that Gangsoe’s death was the price for his own debauchery, as revealed directly in the Jangseungs’ judgment. However, in the section where Gangsoe and the seven men’s bodies are disposed of, an illogical statement is made that even Gangsoe is defined as a man of virtue who lusted after Ongnyeo and died a cruel death. In addition, although a new rule between Men's Death and Ongnyeo is needed due to Deppdgi, who did not die after coveting the Ongnyeo, this is ignored. Rather than logically conveying the events that unfold in the narrative world and the changes that result from them, Byeongangsoe-ga ends with a warning tone, forcibly enforcing the narrative rules established at the beginning of the story. This composition of narrative logic makes it difficult for readers(listeners) to fully accept the work, and may have been a reason for loss of its performance.
