융심리학과 성서적 영성 (Jung’s Psychology and Biblical Spirituality)

초록

영성에 대한 보편적이고 원형적인 개념은 융심리학 곳곳에서 발견된다. 하지만 융이 경험한 성서는 전통적 기독교가 그리고 있는 성서 이미지와 확연히 차이가 난다. 교회는 성서를 ‘하나님의 말씀’으로 받아들인다. 그것은 단순히 경전에 대한 이해가 아니라 거의 유일한 신의 계시로 간주된다. 성서를 통해 인간은 신의 뜻을 알고, 신은 성서를 통해 자신의 의지를 전달한다. 자연, 역사, 전통, 그 밖의 다양한 계시 수단이 있음에도 불구하고 신과 인간 사이에서 가장 믿을 만한 계시수단은 성서라고 하는 대전제가 교회전통을 대변한다. 그것은 교회공동체를 형성하는 중심 역할을 한다. 동시에 그것은 성서를 교회와 종교적 경전 안에 가두는 결과를 초래했다. 이와는 달리, 융은 성서를 일단 교회와 기독교로부터 해방시켜 누구나 경험하는 보편적 사건으로 변모시키고자 한다. 융에게 성서는 특정집단의 전유물이 아닌, 인류 모두를 위해 개방되어야 할 소중한 보물이다. 융이 성서를 대하는 기본 원칙은 대략 다음과 같다.
첫째, 성서는 기독교 경전일 뿐만 아니라, 인류 문화가 만들어낸 보편적인 정신세계를 보여주는 풍부한 자료를 지니고 있다. 성서학자가 아닌 심리학자의 눈으로 성서를 보았음에도 불구하고, 융에게 성서는 자신의 심리학을 전개하는 중요한 기반이 되었다.
둘째, 우리는 성서 안에 담긴 다양한 원형상들을 통해 인간의 깊은 내면에 숨겨진 무의식의 내용을 밝혀낼 수 있다. 합리적인 과학적 사고방식과는 달리, 원형상들은 대체로 초월적이며 신비한 존재로 경험된다.
셋째, 성서에 소개된 사건들은 개인적 경험과 인류의 보편적 경험이 서로 만나 전체성으로 상징되는 신을 경험하는 중요한 매체가 된다.
넷째, 성서에 소개된 영적인 사건들은 현대 정신분석과 심리치료에 중요한 통찰력을 제공한다.
성서에 기초한 목회상담은 선교적 목적보다는, 인류의 보편적 정신세계를 반영하는 치유과정으로 인식되어야 한다. 상담 현장에서 흔히 경험하는 것은 개인의 종교체험이 교리나 학문적 이론에 제한되지 않는다는 사실이다. 언어로 규정할 수 없는 미세한 종교체험이 기존 교리와 부합하지 않는다고 해서 그것을 배제할 때, 개인의 경험은 평가 절하되고 심리적 부담은 가중된다. 집단적 규범으로서의 교리와 개인적인 종교체험 사이에 현존하는 괴리가 심리적 질병을 유발하는 경우가 종종 발생한다. 이때 상담자는 열린 마음으로 내담자의 종교체험을 진지하게 공유할 필요가 있다. 성서에 대한 융의 이해는 바로 임상현장에서의 보편적 경험에서 출발한 것임을 기억할 필요가 있다.
<욥기>에 대한 심리학적 해석인 <욥에게의 응답>을 통해, 융은 성서에 대한 자신의 영적 경험을 소개한다. 융은 기독교 전통을 배제한 채 자신만의 주장을 내세우지는 않는다. 오히려 자신과 유사한 경험을 한 사람들도 많이 있을 수 있다는 점을 내세운다. 기독교 공동체는 교회 밖의 목소리에도 귀를 기울일 필요가 있다고 그는 말한다. 기독교의 하나님이 온전한 신이라면, 그 안에 밝은 면(선)과 어두운 면(악)으로 대변되는 대극의 성향이 존재해야한다. 전통적으로 인간은 신의 섭리를 깨닫거나, 더욱 더 값진 것을 얻기 위해 고난을 받아야만 한다고 여겨왔다. 어느새 고통은 인간의 몫이 되었고, 신은 인간이 당해야하는 고통에 대한 평가자로 남아있다. 이제 신도 인간처럼 고통을 온전히 경험할 때 대극은 통합된다. 욥이 야훼에게 항의한 것은 고통 그 자체보다는 고통에 대한 정당한 가치를 요구한 것 같다. 모든 어두움의 대명사인 고통은 인간의 몫이라는 전통적 견해에 대항하여, 욥은 인간과 운명을 같이 하는 신의 고통을 역설한다. 그것은 그리스도의 십자가 고난으로 현실화된다. 이점에서 볼 때, 길과 진리와 생명으로 대변되는 성서의 영성은 치유와 생명을 추구하는 융심리학의 정신세계와 만난다.

영어초록

A universal and archetypal concept of spirituality is found throughout Jung's psychology. However, Jung's experience of the Bible is distinct from that of traditional Christianity. The Church accepts the Bible as the Word of God. It is not simply an understanding of the scriptures, but a revelation of the Divine Almighty. Through the Bible, God conveys his will and man knows the will of God. Despite the nature, history, tradition, and various other means of revelation, it has been accepted that the most reliable means of communication between God and human beings is the Bible, which represents the church tradition. It plays a central role in forming the church community. At the same time, it has resulted in confining the Bible within the church and for religious traditions. On the other hand, Jung tries to transform the Bible into a universal event that is freed from the circle of Christianity, and that can be experienced by all. For Jung, the Bible is a precious treasure that must be opened for all mankind, not just for a particular group. From the view of Jung, the basic principles of the Bible are as follows.
First, the Bible is not only the Christian scriptures, but it also has a wealth of materials that show the universal spiritual world created by human culture. Despite seeing the Bible through the eyes of a non-biblical scholar, the Bible became an important foundation for the development of Jung's psychology.
Second, we can find the unconscious contents hidden deep inside of man through the various archetypes in the Bible. Unlike rational scientific thinking, archetypal images are often experienced as transcendent and mysterious beings.
Third, the individual as well as the universal experiences in the Bible are important means to meet God, who is symbolized as the whole.
Fourth, spiritual events introduced in the Bible provide important insights into modern psychotherapy.
Bible-based pastoral counseling should be perceived as a healing process that reflects the universal mental world of mankind rather than as having only a missionary purpose. What we often experience at counseling sessions is the fact that individual religious experiences are not limited to any doctrinal or academic theories. When a religious experience cannot be defined in language, it is often devalued and the psychological burden is increased. At this time, the therapist needs to openly accept the client's religious experiences seriously. It is worth remembering that Jung's understanding of the Bible begins with his universal experience in clinical practice, regardless of any religious beliefs.
Through his psychological interpretation of the Book of Job, Jung introduces his spiritual experience of the Bible. Jung excludes the Christian traditions and does not make his own claims. Rather, he argues that many others have have had experiences similar to his own. The Christian community needs to listen to the voice outside the church, he says. If the God of Christianity is the whole, there must be a tendency of the opposites to be represented by the light side (good) and the dark side (evil). Traditionally, humans have seen that they must suffer to understand the providence of God. Suffering has become a part of mankind, and God remains an appraiser of the suffering that man must undergo. Now, when God is fully experiencing suffering as a human being, the opposites are integrated. Job's appeal to the LORD seems to have requested fair value for suffering rather than accepting suffering itself. Against the traditional view that suffering, the synonym of all darkness, is man's part, Job emphasizes the suffering of God in destiny. It becomes a reality of the crucifixion of Christ. In Christ, the opposites, which are represented as the divine and the human, have been harmonized. From this point of view, the spirituality of the Bible, represented by the Way, the Truth, and the Life, which unite the whole, meets with the spiritual world of healing and the life-seeking dimension of Jung's psychology.
