초록

웹3.0에서 현대시라는 장르는 어떻게 될까 라는 간단한 질문으로부터 연구가 시작되었다. 인간과 AI가 가장 큰 차이를 보이는 창의성의 영역이라 할 수 있는 글쓰기 혹은 문학의 영역에서 또한 AI가 인간의 능력을 곧 따라잡을 것처럼 보인다. 이제, 인간과 비인간 AI가 협력하고 초연결되는 현시대에서 AI를 활용하여 예술작품을 창작하는 광경은 낯선 일이 아닐 것이다.
AI와 공존해야 하는 현 상황에서 본고는 시와 이미지를 동시에 결합하는 시 쓰기에 주목하였다. 리듬과 더불어 이미지는 관념과 사물이 만나는 곳이자 시인의 주관적 감정에 따라 선택된 것으로서 시의 가장 중요한 요소이기 때문이다. 따라서 시의 이미지가 형성되는 과정은 인간과 AI와의 차이를 극명하게 잘 보여줄뿐더러, 인간이 어느 지점에서 AI를 적극적으로 활용할 수 있는지를 살펴볼 수 있다. 이에 따라 본고는 최근 AI혁명을 주도하고 있는 초거대 AI 언어모델 ‘ChatGPT’와 AI 이미지 생성 프로그램 ‘Midjourney’를 디카시 창작 과정과 연관지어 살펴보았다.
가장 먼저, 디카시는 이미지(사진)와 시(문자)가 ‘동시에’ 결합하여 5행 이내로 창작되는 시임을 확인하였다. 문제는 이미지에 붙어 있는 잉여의 의미는 인간 개인적 기억에서 구성해 낸 것이라는 점이다. 이 과정까지는 우리가 일반적으로 볼 수 있는 인간만의 창의적인 영역이라 할 수 있다.
초거대 언어모델 ChatGPT를 활용한 경우, 인간은 AI와의 상호작용이 실시간으로 진행되면서 인간이 만족할 만큼의 ‘생성 시(generative poem)’와 ‘AI 예술’로서의 이미지를 동시에 결과물로 얻어낼 수 있다. 물론, 아직까지 AI Image Generator의 이미지는 인간의 예술작품과 이질적일뿐더러 딥 러닝된 데이터들의 ‘조합’에 해당하지만, 머지않아 AI의 기술이 더욱 발전하면서 ‘창작’에 가까운 결과물을 내놓게 될 것이다.
Midjourney는 ChatGPT와 다르게 그래픽 디자이너의 창작물이라 할 만큼 완성도 있는 이미지를 생성해 낸다. Midjourney는 ChatGPT처럼 시를 생성해 낼 수 없으나, 시에 관한 구체적인 설명을 입력하면 인간의 창작물에 가까운 이미지를 결과물로 내놓는다. 그러나 만약 시인 혹은 사용자가 추상적이고 관념적인 작품을 Midjourney에 입력하거나, 보다 자유롭게 이미지를 얻기 위해 피상적으로 시를 설명한다면, 작품과 동떨어지거나 뜻하지 않은 이미지를 결과물로 얻게 될 것이다. 이때의 Midjourney의 창작물은 인간의 ‘창작’에 가까울 것이다.
요컨대, 이미지를 선택하고 시를 쓰는 행위는 인간만의 작업이지만, AI를 활용하여 예술작품을 창작하는 것도 얼마든지 가능하다. 이때, 우리는 어디까지의 작업을 인간의 영역이라고 불러야 할지 심각하게 고민해야 할 것이다.

영어초록

The research started from a simple question: What will the genre of modern poetry look like in Web 3.0? Writing, or the domain of literature, is considered an area of creativity where humans and AI show the most significant difference, yet it seems that AI will soon catch up to human abilities in this domain as well. In today’s era, where humans and non-human AI cooperate and are hyperconnected, creating art using AI is no longer a strange sight.
In this context, where coexistence with AI is inevitable, this study focuses on poetry writing that combines both poetry and images simultaneously. Along with rhythm, imagery is one of the most critical elements of poetry, as it is where abstract ideas and tangible objects meet, selected based on the poet's subjective emotions. Thus, the process of forming poetic images sharply illustrates the differences between humans and AI, while also revealing where humans can actively harness AI. Accordingly, this paper examines the process of creating digital poetry (dica-poetry) in connection with ChatGPT, a leading large-scale AI language model in the current AI revolution, and Midjourney, an AI image generation program.
First, it was confirmed that digital poetry is a form of poetry where an image (a photograph) and words (text) are created simultaneously within five lines. The issue lies in the fact that the surplus meaning attached to the image is derived from personal human memory. Up to this point, we can still see this as a purely creative domain unique to humans.
When using large-scale language models like ChatGPT, humans can interact with AI in real-time and obtain results that are satisfactory as both a 'generative poem' and 'AI art.' Although, for now, AI-generated images still feel unfamiliar and different from human-made artworks, being more like combinations of deep-learned data. However, it won’t be long before AI technology evolves to produce results that are much closer to genuine "creation.“ Unlike ChatGPT, which generates text, Midjourney creates highly complete images, resembling those crafted by graphic designers. While Midjourney cannot generate poems, it can produce images close to human creativity when provided with detailed descriptions of a poem. However, if the poet or user inputs an abstract or conceptual work into Midjourney, or provides superficial descriptions to obtain a more free-form image, the resulting image may deviate from or be unrelated to the original work. In such cases, Midjourney's creations may come closer to human "creation.“ In summary, selecting images and writing poetry are fundamentally human tasks, but creating art using AI is entirely possible. At this point, we must seriously consider which parts of the process should still be called human work.
