웹소설 산업화에 대응하는 웹소설 교육과 학문 (Web novel education and academics in response to the industrialization of web novels)

초록

이 연구에서는 최근 빠르게 성장하고 있는 웹소설 산업 현황과 교육 사례를 살펴보며, 향후 웹소설 교육 및 학문의 고도화 방안을 모색하였다. 웹소설 산업은 스마트폰의 등장과 함께 자리 잡은 문자 콘텐츠 시장으로 최근 급성장하고 있다. 대형 플랫폼을 기반으로 유료화 정책에 성공했을 뿐 아니라 웹툰, 영화, 드라마, 굿즈 등의 원작 IP 시장으로 그 부가가치를 더욱 높이고 있다. 이에 따라 관련 산업군으로 진입하고자 하는 교육 수요자의 욕망과 우수 콘텐츠를 선제적으로 확보하고자 하는 시장의 요구가 일치하며, 웹소설 분야의 교육이 확대되고 있다.
하지만 최근 운영되고 있는 웹소설 교육 프로그램의 경우 종류는 다양하지만 대부분 웹소설 창작에만 초점을 맞춘 단기 교육 프로그램으로 운영되고 있어, 웹소설 분야의 체계적 교육으로는 한계가 있다. 이를 극복하기 위해서는 고등교육 수준의 웹소설 교육이 필요하다. 이때 주목할 수 있는 사례가 청강문화산업대학의 웹소설창작전공, 광주대학교 문예창작과, 배재대학교 국어국문한국어교육학과가 있다. 이들 전공은 체계적 교육과정, 학문화를 위한 노력, 지산학 협력 등을 통해 웹소설 교육의 질을 고도화하고 있다.
또한 질 높은 웹소설 교육을 담보할 수 있는 웹소설 분야의 연구가 필요하다. 구체적으로 웹소설 작품 및 연구자료의 아카이빙과 웹소설 이론 확립, 작품 비평 등이 이루어져야 한다. 나아가 웹소설의 학문 정립을 시도해야 한다. 웹소설 분야가 학문화되지 않는다면 웹소설의 학술적 연구와 교육은 시대 유행에 따른 유동적 현상에 그칠 수밖에 없기 때문이다.
급성장하고 있는 웹소설 산업이 더욱 고도화되기 위해서는 필수적으로 교육과 학문이 함께 발전할 필요가 있다. 웹소설의 학술적 연구 결과물이 웹소설 교육의 질을 높일 것이고, 이를 바탕으로 웹소설 산업은 더욱 성장할 수 있을 것이기 때문이다. 이처럼 웹소설의 산업, 교육, 학문의 선순환 체계를 마련하기 위해서, 웹소설 교육과 학문의 체계 정립을 모색해야 할 때이다.

영어초록

This study examines web novel education cases currently being operated in relation to the current status of the rapidly growing web novel industry, and explores ways to advance web novel education and academics in the future. The web novel industry is a well-established text content market that was formed with the advent of smartphones and has recently been growing rapidly. Not only has it succeeded in a paid policy based on large platforms, but it is also increasing its added value with original IPs such as webtoons, movies, dramas, and goods. Accordingly, the desire of education demanders who want to enter the related industry and the market demand to preemptively secure excellent content are in line, and education in the field of web novels is expanding.
Education entities in the field of web novels are diverse, including private academies, publishers and platforms, public institutions, and universities. Recently operated web novel education programs are diverse, but most of them are short-term education programs that focus only on web novel creation, and there are limitations in systematic education in the field of web novels. To overcome this, web novel education at the level of higher education is necessary. At this time, notable cases include the Web Novel Creation Major at Cheonggang Cultural Industry College, the Department of Creative Writing at Gwangju University, and the Department of Korean Language and Literature Education at Paichai University. These majors are improving the quality of web novel education through systematic curriculum, efforts for academicization, and cooperation with local government, research institute, educational institution In addition, research in the field of web novels that can guarantee high-quality web novel education is necessary. Specifically, archiving of web novel works and research materials, establishment of web novel theory, and critique of works should be carried out. Continuous attempts to establish web novels academically should also be made. If this is not guaranteed, not only academic research but also web novel education will inevitably remain as fluid education following the trends of the times.
In order for the rapidly growing web novel industry to become more advanced, education and academia must develop together. If industry, education, and research do not come together, the web novel industry will inevitably exist as fluid education following short-term trends. The results of academic research on web novels will improve the quality of web novel education, and based on this, the web novel industry should seek to establish a virtuous cycle system for further development, and it is time to seek to establish a system for web novel education and academia.
