초록

본 연구는 일제강점기인 1920년대에 신극단체 토월회가 식민지 조선사회의 축소판인 일본인 소유의 조선극장과 전속되다시피 제휴․계약한 사실에 주목하고, 당시에 제휴의 전말과 토월회의 공연활동 내역 및 양상을 언론자료 및 사료에 기반하여 재구성하는 데 일차적인 목표를 두었다. 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 토월회와 조선극장의 실제적 제휴․계약 기간은 1929년 10월부터 30년 2월까지 5개월간이었으며, 극단이 조선극장에서 공연한 기간은 부흥 제1회 공연(1929.11.1~6)부터 15회 공연(1930.1.22~27)까지 약 3개월에 불과했던 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 당시 조선극장의 흥행 순서는 ‘영화 1편, 연극 1편, 레뷰 수종, 연극 1편, 영화 1편’의 순이었고, 토월회는 영화상영 사이에 배분된 1시간여 동안 통상 단막극 두 편을 공연하였다. 그러나 토월회는 계약상 우위에 있는 조선극장 측의 수익성에 대한 요구로부터 자유롭지 못했으며, 공연목록과 연출에서는 재미와 볼거리에 방점을 둔 희가극과 악극이 절대다수를 차지하였다. 이런 의미에서 토월회의 조선극장 시절은 ‘(희)가․악극 전성기’였다고 할 수 있다. 셋째, 토월회는 ≪아리랑고개≫나 ≪지나간 시대≫ 같은 창작(악)극의 상연에서는 광무대 시절에 ‘고전의 현대화 상연’에 담보된 ‘저항성 전통주의’의 연장선상에 있는 ‘조선정조를 담은 의미심장의 시대극’이라는 이른바 ‘토월회식 근대극’을 창출하는 성과를 거두었다. 그러나 이것은 양식상 아직 근대 서양연극의 요소들과 일본 다이쇼기의 근대적 신게키 형태가 무질서하게 혼종화된 가(假)신극 내지 신극류의 범주에 속한 것이라고 할 수 있다. 마지막으로, 토월회는 조선극장 내에서 약 3개월간 공연하는 동안에도 조선사회의 항일구국을 향한 식민지적 격동에서 비롯된 뜻밖에 사건과 사고를 피할 수 없었다. 이것은 일제치하에서 조선(인)극장은 거의 유일한 종족공간이었으나 식민권력은 예외 없이 돌입․행사되었기 때문이라고 할 수 있다.

영어초록

This study is to explore the history of Shingeuk troupe Towolhoe and Bak, Sunghee’s activities of the performances at the time of Chosun Theathre in 1920’s, focused on Towolhoe’s partnership agreement with the Japanese-owned Chosun Theatre as a microcosm of the Chosun society under the Japanese imperialism. Based on the Press and Historical Documents at that Time, the results of this study are as follows.
First, the actual affiliate contract period of Towolhoe with Chosun Theatre was from October 1929 to February 1930, at most 5 months, but it’s running times were from the ‘Revival of the 1st Performance’(1929.11.1~6) to the ‘Revival of the 15th Performance’(1930.1.22.~27) at least 15 times.
Second, at that time, Chosun Theatre’s entertainment programs and orders were consisted of the ‘motion-picture(movie) 1, theatre 1, several works of revue, theatre 1, motion-picture 1’, and Towolhoe usually showed two plays for about 1 hour among movie screenings. However Towolhoe was never free from the need for the profitability of Chosun Theatre, and it’s repertoires were filled with the majority of the (Hui)Gageuk(operetta) and Akgeuk(musical drama) based on the amusement of fun and attractions. In this sense, the time of Towolhoe in Chosun Theatre could be characterized by ‘it’s heyday of (Hui)Gageuk and Akgeuk’.
Third, Towolhoe invented the ‘meaningful period play with the Chonsun’s sentiment’, so-called the ‘modern theatre of the Towolhoe-style’ in the creative works such as ≪Arirang Hill≫and ≪Past times≫, which was at the extension of the ‘resistance traditionalism’ contained in the ‘staging of the modernization of classic works’ at the time of Gwangmudae. However, it was from the style which belongs to the category of the Shingeuklike as a chaotically hybridized form from the modern theatrical elements of Western and modern Shingeki form of Japan’s Taishow era.
Finally, Towolhoe couldn’t have been avoided also during 3 months in the Chosun Theatre the unexpected incidents and accidents that had come from the colonial turbulence of Chosun society against Japanese imperialism. It was because that Chosun Theatre under the rule of Japanese imperialism was the only space of ethnicity, but the colonial powers in that place was to be broken into and harmed without exception.
