5월 소설에 나타난 복수 서사의 형상화 연구 (A Study on the Shape of Revenge Narratives in the May Novel)

초록

80년 ‘5월’은 시작부터 왜곡되었고 거짓으로 증폭되었고, 이제 망각으로 역사화되고있다. 시작의 왜곡에 저항하기 위해서 재현과 증언은 필수적 과정처럼 보였고, 거짓의증폭에 대항하기 위해서 부끄러움의 자기 고백적 서사는 당연한 듯 보였다. 그러나 재현과 증언의 글쓰기로 ‘부끄러움’을 치유하기에는 ‘그때 너는 어디에 있었는가’에 대답할수 없었고, 일인칭 고백체 역시 ‘무고함’을 증명하기에는 무기력했다. 그럼에도 불구하고5월은 언제나 옳고, 혁명적이고, 진보적이고, 민주적이어야 하기에 5월과 복수를 연결하는 것이 그리 쉽지는 않았다. 하지만 단죄의 기능을 상실한 국가로 인하여 끊임없이유예되었던 복수는, 이제 소설에서나마 그것이 사적 복수임에도 불구하고 정당성을 지니려 하고 있다.
의문은 ‘국가적 폭력은 아직 끝나지 않았다’는 점에서부터 시작되었다. 80년의 물리적 폭력에서 이제는 눈에 보이지 않는 정신적 폭력이 계속되고 있는 것은 아닌가 하는의심 때문이었다. 국가적 폭력은 계속되는데 개인적 폭력(사적 복수)은 철저하게 봉쇄되고 있는 상황에서 오히려 사적 복수를 이야기한다면 그 역설적 의미로 인하여 복수는https://doi.org/10.31929/namdo.2022.46.91 92 남도문화연구 제46집(2022.8) 정당성을 얻게 될지도 모른다. 이 5월의 복수가 지닌 공공성, 대체(불)가능성, 낭만성의특성을 토대로 사적 복수의 정당함을 이야기하는 것, 그것은 공공의 영역에서 배제되었던 개인 주체들의 경험을 소환하는 것이다.
공공 담론의 영역에 있어야 할 많은 문제들이 사적인 영역으로 배제되어 개인이 풀어야 할 것으로 바뀌었듯이, 5월의 복수 역시 공공의 영역에서 배제되었다. 그러나 이해경의 『사슴 사냥꾼의 당겨지지 않은 방아쇠』(2013)에서는 개인의 기억과 역사적 기억이겹치는 현상, 즉 복수(複數)적 복수를 통해 5월의 복수가 공공성을 지니고 있으며, 이공공성은 5월에 대한 기억을 끊임없이 재생산하고 있음을 이야기한다. 또한 죄의식과부끄러움에 사로잡혔던 5월의 주체들은 거대한 5월에 억눌려 주체적인 인간으로 살지못했으나, 김경욱의 『야구란 무엇인가』(2013)에서는 아이러니적 복수를 통해 5월 복수의 대체(불)가능성이 인물의 성찰과 화해를 이끌어 내고 있음을 이야기한다. 그리고 낭만주의적 혁명성이 제거된 채 순수와 향수만 남았을지라도 낭만은 언제나 체제 바깥을꿈꾸게 하여 ‘악’을 막을 수 있게 하듯이, 손흥규의 「최초의 테러리스트」, 「최후의 테러리스트」(2008)에서는 끊임없이 실패하고 지연되는 5월의 낭만적 복수를 통해 5월의역사화를 막아내고 희망을 이끌어내고 있음을 이야기한다.
아직도 5월을 이야기하는 이유는, ‘미완의 해결’에 대한 억울함 때문만은 아닐 것이다. 인간이 인간일 수 있었던 찬란했던 시간에 대한 기억도, 그때의 아픔도, 그때의 기쁨도 공유되고 있지 못한 현실 때문일 것이다. 그 기억의 보존을 위해서, 그 공감의 정서를위해서, 이제 5월 문학은 새롭게 변신할 것을 믿는다.

영어초록

‘May’ in 1980 was distorted from the beginning and duplicated falsely, and now it is being historicalized as oblivion. In order to resist the distortion of the beginning, representation and testimony seemed essential processes, in order to counteract the amplification of lies, the self-confessed narrative of shame seemed natural. However, the writing of representation and testimony could not answer ‘where were you then’ to heal ‘shame’, and the first person confession was also helpless to prove ‘innocence’.
Nevertheless, linking May with revenge was not easy, as May should always be right, revolutionary, progressive and democratic. But revenge, which has been constantly suspended due to a state that has lost its function of conviction, is trying to have justification, even though it is private revenge in the novel. In this paper, I would like to describe the revenge narratives of the May novels, which talked about the reason why private revenge has no choice but to have justification.
The question began with the fact that ‘national violence is not over yet’. It was because of the suspicion that mental violence, which is now invisible, continues from 80 years of physical violence. With national violence continuing and personal violence (private revenge) being completely blocked, 5월 소설에 나타난 복수 서사의 형상화 연구 121 someone may gain strength if they talk about the legitimacy of private revenge. Therefore, I would like to recall the experiences of individual subjects who were excluded from the public domain through multiple narratives of May novels based on the characteristics of May’s revenge, the possibility of replacement, and romance.
Just as many problems that should be in the realm of public discourse have been excluded from the private sphere, so has May’s revenge, too, been excluded from the public realm. However, Lee Hae-kyung’s 『Unpulled Trigger』(2013) tells that the revenge of May has publicity through the overlapping of individual and historical memories, and this publicity constantly reproduces memories of May. In addition, May’s subjects, who were obsessed with guilt and shame, were suppressed in May and could not live as independent humans, but Kim Kyung-wook’s 『What is Baseball』 (2013) says that the possibility of revenge in May is leading to reflection and reconciliation. And just as romance can always dream outside the system to prevent evil, even if only purity and nostalgia remain removed, Son Heung-kyu’s 「First Terrorist」(2008) says that the ever-failing and delayed May’s romantic revenge is preventing May’s historicalization and drawing hope.
The reason why we are still talking about May is probably not just because of the resentment of the ‘unfinished resolution’. It is probably because of the reality that neither the memories of the glorious times when humans could be human nor the pains of those days nor the joys of those days were shared. For the preservation of that memory, for the emotion of sympathy, I believe that May literature will be transformed anew.
