소쇄원의 일원론적 공간관에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Spatial View of Monistic Space Conception in Soswaewon)

초록

(연구배경 및 목적) 한국은 1970년대 이후 단시간의 도시화와 산업화가 이루어지면서 수많은 전통 공간들이 훼손되었다. 새로운 건축물들은 자본주의적 사고와 서양 합리주의의 이원론적 공간관이 반영된 것이며, 그 과정에서 한국 고유의 정체성마저 모호해지는 결과를 초래하였다. 이처럼 20세기 이후 서양의 공간관은 현대 철학과 신(新)물리학의 등장으로 변화하고 있었고, 일원론적 성향을 띄는 철학가, 건축가, 과학자, 예술가 들이 주목받기 시작했다. 서구 사람들은 이를 동양 신비주의라 하여 높은 관심을 보이고 있으며, 이러한 시대적 흐름에 맞추어 동서양을 하나로 묶는 일원론적 공간관의 재해석과 함께 한국 전통공간의 재조명이 필요하다고 판단된다. 이에 따라 본 연구는 한국 소쇄원(瀟灑園)의 공간조영에서 발견되는 현(現)시대의 일원론적 공간관을 밝히는 데에 그 목적이 있다. (연구방법) 첫째, 일원론과 관련하여 동양 사상, 서양 현대철학 그리고 신(新)물리학 등의 이론적 고찰을 통한 비교분석을 한다. 둘째, 일원론적 공간관의 개념을 정의하고 이들 간의 공통된 공간적 특성을 키워드로 도출한다. 셋째, 도출된 키워드들을 기존문헌과 선행연구에 의해 살펴본 소쇄원의 공간조영 영역에 대입하여 실증적 비교·분석을 통해 상호 관련성을 제시한다. (결과) 공간 특성 키워드는 상관성, 무한성, 우연성, 내재성, 가변성, 이중성, 상보성, 정신성으로 분류되며 , 소쇄원의 공간을 5개의 영역으로 분류하여 공통 특성을 대입해 본 결과 일괄적으로 적용된다는 것을 알 수 있었으며 특히 상관적, 가변적, 상보적 특성이 강하게 나타났다. (결론) 본 연구에서 500여 년 전 조영된 소쇄원을 21세기 주목받는 일원론적 공간관과 비교·분석한 결과 모든 특성들의 일치성이 높은 것으로 판단되며, 특히 상호의존적, 가변적, 상호보완적 특성과 함께 필수불가결한 상보적 특성이 강하게 나타남을 알 수 있었다. 결국 소쇄원은 현(現)일원론적 공간관을 대표할 수 있는 매우 중요한 한국의 전통건축문화재로서 지속적인 연구적 가치를 갖는다고 판단되며, 또한 다양하고 독창적인 접근 및 해석을 통해 소쇄원 이외에도 수많은 한국 문화유산들의 가치가 다시 주목되고 활발히 연구되어지길 기대해본다.

영어초록

(Background and Purpose) Since the 1970s, many Korean traditional spaces—such as houses and old roads—have been damaged due to urbanization and industrialization. The new architecture reflects highly capitalist thinking, Western rationalism, and biblical spatiality. As a result of this process, Korea's own identity has become ambiguous. At the time, however, the western spatial view was shaken by the emergence of contemporary philosophy and new physics. Moreover, philosophers, architects, scientists, and artists with tendency toward monism have begun to attract attention in the 21st century. Western people call this oriental mysticism and show significant interest in the trend, necessitating the reinterpretation of the monistic spatial view that bound the East and West together and reexamined the Korean cultural heritage. The purpose of this study is to reveal the current monistic spatial view found in Soswaewon. (Method) For research analysis, we first examine the theoretical considerations of monism theory through a comparative analysis of oriental thought, western modern philosophy, and new physics. Second, the concept of the current monistic spatial perspective is defined, and the common spatial characteristics are derived as a keyword. Third, the derived keywords are assigned to the spatial region of Soswaewon by means of existing literature and previous studies, while the mutual relation is shown through an empirical comparative analysis. (Results) Common characteristic keywords of the monistic spatial view were classified as correlation, infinity, contingency, immanence, changeability, duplicity, complementarity, and enlightenment; and were applied to five space zones of Soswaewon. As a result, it can be seen that all are applied collectively to Soswaewon; and that correlative, changeable, and complementary characteristics are especially strong. (Conclusions) In this study, a high degree of coincidence was found between the traditional spatial perspectives of Soswaewon and the monistic spatial perspectives attracting attention in the 21st century; in which mutual indispensable complementary characteristics showed a strong correlation with interdependent, changeable, and complementary characteristics. Ultimately, Soswaewon is found to have continued research value as a highly significant traditional Korean cultural heritage that can represent the current monistic spatial view. Through a diverse and unique approach of review and interpretation, further attention and active research is expected to add value to many types of cultural heritage in the Korea.
