초록

본 논문은 원불교 敎義사상을 민중성의 관점에서 검토하여 그 성립 배경과 민중종교사상으로서의 구조와 특징을 밝혀보려고 한 것이다.
19세기 말의 한국은 나라 내외에서 미증유의 동요와 전환을 겪었다. 그 속에서 민중은 억압을 당하고 사상적으로 혼미하면서도 변혁의 다양한 모색을 시도하고 있었다. 그러한 민중의 구제를 목적으로 창시된 것이 동학과 증산교 등 근대한국 민중종교이다. 원불교 또한 이러한 민중종교의 사상적 흐름 속에서 탄생하였다. 이들 민중종교의 창시나 활동의 무대가 모두 호남지방에 있었던 것은 주목할 만한 사실이다.
원불교 교의의 중심적인 사상으로서 불법이념과 함께 후천개벽사상이 있다. 후천개벽사상은 현실생활의 변혁을 대망하는 민중의식이나 그 종교사상을 받아들이고 그것에 적극적인 가치를 부여하여 체계화한 종교사상이다. 한국근대 민중종교는 공통적으로 후천개벽의 낙원세계와 거기에 이르는 길을 추구하여 이를 제시하여 왔다. 원불교는 선행 민중종교들과 후천개벽사상을 공유하면서 후천세계 실현의 계기가 정신개벽에 있음을 가장 명확하게 밝히고 그것을 위한 구체적인 방법론까지 제시하였다.
원불교 교의에서 정신개벽의 실천적인 방법론으로서 제시된 것이 ‘진리적 종교의 신앙과 사실적 도덕의 훈련’이다. 그것은 법신불一圓相을 신앙의 대상과 수행의 표본으로 삼아서 신앙문의 ‘四恩ㆍ四要’와 수행문의 ‘三學ㆍ八條’의 교리로서 원불교 교리의 핵심을 이루고 있다. 그것은 보다 구체적으로 恩思想의 실천(법신불일원상의 현현인 사은에 대한 報恩)에 의한 상생과 평화의 세계 건설과 삼학의 수행에 의한 정신의 주체성 확립을 의미한다. 삼학은 다시 구체적인 실천 요목으로 체계화되어 있고 거기에는 원불교 교의사상의 민중성이 자세하게 나타나고 있다.
원불교의 창시자 少太山 朴重彬이 당시의 현실 사회에 대하여 ‘식민지지배하’라고 하는 시대인식과 자신이 호남출신이라는 사실인식을 확실히 가졌던 것이 후천개벽사상의 사실적이고 합리적이며 실천적인 특징을 갖는 근거가 되었으리라 보아진다.
원불교 후천개벽사상의 핵심적 내용의 하나로 은사상에 바탕을 둔 상생과 평화 이념이 있다. 그것은 강자ㆍ약자의 대립과 항쟁의 역사를 극복하려는 少太山의 역사관이며 평화적인 삶에 대한 민중의 대망이 반영된 평화 이념이다. 그의 민족관은 민족주의적인 성향이 강하면서도 동시에 상생과 평화 이념이라는 보편주의적인 성향을 지니는 것이다.
少太山은 후천의 문명세계를 이상적 佛國土라고 표현함으로써 민중의 當來佛思想을 수용하고 그 개념을 창조적으로 전환시켰다. 그것은 한 부처가 주재하는 불국토라는 개념을 민중의 보편적 자각에 의한 불국토라는 의미로 재생시켰다는 뜻이 된다. 여기에 역사의 주체는 각성한 민중이라는 소태산의 민중관이 나타나고 있으며 그것이 소태산의 민중종교사상의 기저를 이르고 있다고 하겠다.

영어초록

This thesis is to clarify the background of foundation of Won-Buddhism and its structure and character as a popular religious thought by an investigation on the tenet and thought of Won-Buddhism from the viewpoint of people in general.
At the end of 19th century Korea experienced unprecedented tremble and change in inside of the country, as well as outside. While public were suppressed and ideologically confused, they were trying to search various ways of solution. Among those ways, modern Korean popular religions, including Dong-Hak, Jeung-San-Kyo and others, were established for the purpose of salvation of the public. Won-Buddhism also born in this theoretical current of popular religions. It is quite significant fact that Ho-Nam region was the main stage of foundations or activities of those religion.
The thought of Buddha Dharma and the thought of Future Great Opening are the central idea of Won-Buddhist tenet. The thought of Future Great Opening was systemized by accepting public consciousness of strong eagerness on reform of reality of life as a religious thought and giving positive value to it. Korean modern popular religions commonly present and seek the paradise of Future Great Opening and the way to reach there. Won-Buddhism, possessing similar thought of Future Great Opening of which other popular religions had, most clearly clarifies the spiritual Great Opening as an opportunity to realize the Future Great Opening world, and suggests definite methodologies for it.
In the tenet of Won-Buddhism, the suggested practical method for realization of spiritual Great Opening is ‘the faith on truthful religion and the discipline of practical moral.’
The core of Won-Buddhist tenet is composed of the Gateway of Faith with ‘Fourfold Grace and Four Essence’ and the Gateway of Practice with ‘Three Studies and Eight Articles’ by putting Dharmakāya Buddha and Il-Won-Sang as the object of faith and the model of practice. It is more concretely signifying the construction of the reciprocal and peaceful world through the practice of the grace thought — as a gratitude for Fourfold Grace, the manifestation of Dharmakāya Buddha and Il-Won-Sang, and the establishment of spiritual identity by practice of the Three Studies. The Three Studies is systemized as specific articles of practice which contain the popular character of the tenet and the thought of Won-Buddhism in detail.
It seems to be the reason to have the real, rational and practical character of the Future Great Opening thought that Sot’aesan Park Chung Bin, the founder of Won-Buddhism, had the conscious of the age as ‘the under colonial government’ and the consciousness of reality that he himself is from Ho-Nam region.
One of the core of Future Great Opening thought of Won-Buddhism is the idea of reciprocity and peace based on Grace thought. It is the Sot‘aesan’s historical view to overcome the history of antagonism and struggle between the strong and the weak, and also the idea of peace that great wish of public for peaceful life was reflected. His ethnic view simultaneously contains the strong nationalism and the universalism of the idea of reciprocity and peace.
Sot'aesan expressed the future civilized world as an ideal Buddha world by accepting the thought of future Buddha of public and creatively converted it. It means that the concept of Buddha world, presided by a Buddha, was reformed into the meaning of by universal self-realization of public.
In this idea, it can be found that Sot‘aesan’s view of public is the awakened public as the subject of history, and that flows the base of the his thought of popular religion.
