A Study on Learners’ Perceptions of Team Teaching by Korean and Native Speakers in Business English Course

The purpose of this study is to identify student perceptions of adopting a team teaching method for an English course offered by a Department of Secretarial Studies and to suggest its applicability to other courses in secretarial studies. To this end, the team teaching method, taught by a Korean and a native English professor, was utilized in a Business English course for students majoring in Secretarial Studies. This paper investigated 51 students’ satisfaction, preferences, advantages and disadvantages of team teaching.
The results reflected students’ positive stance toward team teaching. A survey on students’ course satisfaction and students’ instructional preferences showed that students actively took part in classes and confirmed that students preferred team teaching over traditional teaching methods. Students’ preference for professors’ focusing areas in class showed a high demand for grammar and vocabulary from the Korean professor and pronunciation and conversation from the native English professor. The researchers found that students were satisfied with the class and their improved language abilities. Some students, however, felt pressure while taking the native English professor’s class due to their insufficient English skills. The results of this study indicates that team teaching of English should be further explored in Secretarial Studies.
