‘국학’에서 ‘한국학’으로, 새로운 진로의 모색—『민족문화연구』 한국사(전근대) 연구의 회고— (From ‘National Studies’ to ‘Korean Studies’: Exploring New Paths ―A Retrospective on Pre-modern Korean History Research in Korean Cultural Studies)

초록

본고는 고려대학교 민족문화연구원에서 발행하는 『민족문화연구』의 창간호부터 99호까지의 논문 가운데 한국사 전근대사 분야에 한정하여 연구성과를 돌아보는데 목적을 두었다. 이것은 『민족문화연구』의 100호 발간을 기념하고, 한편으로는 1964년에 창간된 이후 2024년을 앞두고 60년의 연구사를 검토하는 의미도 있다.
정량적으로 검토한 결과 전근대사 분야의 글은 총 186편에 이르며, 이 가운데 자료해제는 17편이 있다. 논문을 분야별로 나누어 보면 고고학 5편, 미술사 7편, 민속학 10편이 있고, 한국사 분야는 고대사 22편, 고려시대 22편, 조선전기 18편, 조선후기 76편과 시기 분류가 다소 애매한 조선시대 7편, 전근대 2편이 있다. 전근대사 분야 147편을 대상으로 각 시대별, 주제별 분류 결과에 의하면, 연구자들이 가장 선호한 주제는 정치사이다. 국제관계사와 사상사의 경우 고대부터 조선후기까지 시기를 불문하고 비교적 고르게 관심을 받고 있는 반면에 사회사는 고려시대의 경우 보이지 않는다. 또한 경제사는 고려시대 1편을 제외하면 조선후기에 편중되어 있어 분야별 차이가 심한 것으로 생각된다.
그 다음으로 내용과 주제를 검토한 결과 몇 가지 연구경향을 확인하였다. 첫째, 2000년 이전에는 한국학의 초석을 다지는 기초적인 연구, 전통문화와 관련된 다양한 전공자들의 논고가 게재되었으며, 식민사학에 대한 비판과 한국 문화에 대한 자부심 표출이 강조되었다. 둘째, 1960년대 이후로 식민사관의 타율성과 정체성론을 비판하면서 등장한 내재적 발전론이 비판적으로 계승되었다. 셋째, 2000년을 전후로 ‘국학’에서 ‘한국학’으로 방향 전환이 이루어졌다. 이밖에 전근대사 분야와 관련하여 18개의 특집, 31편의 연구가 진행되었으며, <해외한국학자료 소개>라는 제목으로 17개의 자료 소개가 있었다.

영어초록

The purpose of this paper is to reflect on research achievements in the field of pre-modern Korean history, focusing on the papers published in the journal “Korean Cultural Studies” (RIKS) from its inaugural issue to the 99th issue by the Research Institute of Korean Studies at Korea University. This is intended to commemorate the publication of the 100th issue of RIKS and, on the other hand, to review 60 years of research history leading up to 2024, anticipating the 60th anniversary since its establishment in 1964.
Quantitatively, the review results show a total of 186 articles in the field of pre-modern Korean history, with 17 of them being data releases. When classified by field, there are 5 articles on archaeology, 7 on art history, 10 on folklore, and in the field of Korean history, there are 22 articles on ancient history, 22 on the Goryeo period, 18 on the early Joseon period, 76 on the late Joseon period, and 7 on the somewhat ambiguous period of the Joseon dynasty, with 2 on the pre-modern period. Among the 147 articles in the field of pre-modern history, according to the classification by era and topic, the most preferred topic by researchers is political history. In contrast, social history does not seem to be prominent, especially in the Goryeo period. Additionally, economic history is heavily biased towards the late Joseon period, except for one article on the Goryeo period, indicating significant differences between fields.
Next, the review of content and topics identified several research trends. Firstly, before the year 2000, foundational research laying the groundwork for Korean studies and various papers by scholars from diverse disciplines related to traditional culture were published. Critiques of the heteronomy and notion of stagnated development of colonial historiography and expressions of pride in Korean culture were emphasized. Secondly, since the 1960s, the intrinsic development theory that emerged while criticizing the heteronomy and notion of stagnated development of colonial historiography has been critically inherited. Thirdly, around the year 2000, there was a shift in direction from ‘國學’ (national studies) to ‘韓國學’ (Korean studies). In addition, 18 special features and 31 studies related to pre-modern Korean history were conducted, and 17 resources were introduced under the title “Introduction to Overseas Korean Studies Materials.”
