충혜왕의 폐위와 고려 유자儒者들의 공민왕 지원 배경 (The Context of Dethronement of King Chunghye(忠惠王) and Goryeo(高麗) Confucianists' Support for King Gongmin(恭愍王))

초록

이 논문은 공민왕의 즉위과정에서 전개된 정치적 추이와 공민왕 즉위를 지지했던 유자들의 활동과 지향을 살펴본 논문이다.
공민왕대는 원의 지배에서 벗어나 중국대륙과 새로운 외교관계를 정립하고 고려국정을 쇄신하고자 하던 때였다. 그러나 공민왕의 즉위는 그다지 순탄한 편은 아니었다. 형이었던 충혜왕이 원에 압송되어 악양에서 사망하였지만 공민왕은 형의 뒤를 이어 즉위하지 못하였다.
충혜왕의 죽음은 그 자신의 도덕적 결함이 크게 중요한 원인이기는 하였으나 원에서 세력을 넓혀가고 있었던 기황후 세력과의 갈등과도 어느 정도 관련이 있었다. 기황후는 충혜왕 후 원년(1340) 제2황후에 책봉됨으로써 자정원을 바탕으로 원 황실 내에서 세력을 확충하고, 또 고룡보‧박불화 등 고려출신 환관들을 구사하여 조정에까지 영향력을 넓히고 있었다. 기황후를 배경으로 한 기씨 세력은 이를 바탕으로 고려에서 세력을 키워가고 있었다.
한편 충혜왕은 고려 내에서 독단적이고 무도한 행동으로 많은 원성을 사고 있었으며, 고위 신료들에게는 그다지 신뢰를 주지 못하는 상황이었다. 충혜왕이 체포되었을 때 강융‧이능간‧권한공 등은 고려왕의 안위보다는 원 황제의 명령을 중시하는 발언을 하고 있었으며, 충혜왕을 구원하기 위한 노력은 이제현‧김륜 등 일부에 불과했다.
충혜왕이 원에 압송될 당시 주도적인 역할을 하였던 고용보는 기황후 측근의 환관으로 원에서도 강력한 힘을 발휘하고 있었으며, 당시 압송되었던 충혜왕을 대신해서 정동행성의 업무를 관장한 것은 기황후의 형제 기철과 원에서 건너온 관료인 홍빈이었다는 점은 당시 충혜왕 제거의 배후가 기황후 및 기씨 세력이었을 가능성을 보여준다.
충혜왕 제거 이후 충혜왕의 아들 충목왕이 즉위하였지만, 고려의 정국은 더욱 혼란한 상황으로 접어들었다. 이러한 상황을 맞아 고려의 유자들은 좀더 유능한 군주를 통한 ‘정상적인 국정운영’을 요구하고 있었다. 고려 유자들이 공민왕을 지원하게 된 배경에는 이들의 현실인식이 자리잡고 있었다. 이제현과 이곡은 충혜왕 이후 고려의 국정운영을 정상적인 상황은 아니라고 파악하고 있었다. 그 결과 이들은 충목왕 서거 후 공민왕 옹립운동에 적극적으로 가담하였던 것이다. 이곡의 경우 충정왕대의 고려를 ‘나라가 아니다’라고 까지 극언하였으며, 이제현은 군주와 신료들의 수신을 강력하게 요구하였다.
공민왕이 즉위한 후 유자들은 공민왕에게 큰 기대를 걸었으나 현실은 그렇지 않았다. 새로운 개혁의 요구와 기씨 세력 등 구세력에 포위된 공민왕은 국정운영과 개혁의 방향을 유자들에게 찾지 않고 무장세력과 속세와 격리되었던 인물인 신돈에게 찾음으로써 고려 유자들의 기대 방향과는 어긋난 길을 걸었던 것이다.

영어초록

This paper focuses on the political situation concerning the enthronement process of King Gongmin and the activities and aims of confucianists who supported the enthronment of King Gongmin. In the reign of King Gongmin, Goryeo(高麗) established new diplomatic relations with mainland China and tried to reform political affairs after getting out of the domination of Won. However, the enthronement of King Gongmin did not proceed smoothly. Although King Chunghye, his older brother, had been dead after transferring to Won, King Gongmin did not ascended the throne following his brother.
The death of King Chunghye(忠惠王) was resulted mainly from his moral flaws. However, it was somewhat associated with conflicts with the powers of Empress Gi(奇皇后) who were extending their political influences in Yuan(元). Empress Gi expanded her political power in imperial Won based on the Jacheongwon(資政院) with being invested as the second Empress in 1340 of Yuan years. She also exerted her political influence over the royal administration by commanding eunuches as Goryongbo and Parkbuka(朴不花) from Goryeo. That is, the power of Gi families with such political backgrounds strengthened their own influences in Goryeo.
On the other hand, King Chunghye incurred serious resentment of their courtiers for his dogmatic and reckless behaviors, and did not gain high-raking officials' trust. Kangyoung(姜融), Leeneunggan(李陵幹), and Keonhangong(權漢功) claimed the commands of the Yuan Emperor rather than the safety for the king when King Chunghye was arrested. The efforts to rescue the king were just attempted partly by Leejaehyun(李齊賢) and Kimryun(金倫), etc.
Goyongbu(高龍甫) who had played a leading role for the transfer of King Chunghye exerted strong influence in Won as an eunuch closed to Empres Gi. In addition, Gicheol(奇轍) of Empress Gi's brother and Hongbin(洪彬) of an official from Yuan managed political works of Jeongdonghangsung(征東行省) in place of transferred King Chunghye. These backgrounds suggested that the de facto power related to the removal of King Chunghye was Empress Gi and Gi families.
Although King Chongmog, his son, ascended the throne after the removal of King Chunghye, Goryeo fell into a chaotic state of political affairs. Goryeo confucionists asked for ‘normal and stable political management’ by a more competent king. The backgrounds that Goryeo confucionists supported King Gongmin were resulted from their recognition of real circumstances of those days. LeeJaehyun and Leegok recognized that the political situation of Goryeo was not a normal and stable state after the removal of King Chunghye. Therefore, they took active part in helping King Gongmin to the throne after the death of King Chunghye. Leegok(李穀) criticized strongly that ‘Goryeo under King Chungjeong(忠定王) was not a country’. Leejaehyun also insisted strongly self-reflection and self-renovation of a king and his courtiers.
After the enthronement of King Gongmin, the confucionists had great expectations on King Gongmin but the results were completely different. King Gongmin was under the political demands for new reformation and the political influences of Gi families. However, King Gongmin did not come up to the confucionists' expectations as getting the goals and directions for political management and reformation from Sindon who had kept isolated from the world.
