그리스어 'litotes'에서 '단순함'의 의미는 “더 많은 것을 알아듣게 하기 위해 줄여 말하는 방법”을 가리킨다. 그러나 단순함은 화자 측에 더 큰 의도를 숨겨 놓은 모양일 뿐이다. 이 문자적 ​​읽기는 문맥에 달려 있으며, 항상 명확하지는 않은 상황을 고려하여 화자의 의도를 해석하는 것은 오직 청자의 몫이다. 성공적인 의사소통을 위해서 완서법은 발화적 측면에서 ‘줄어든 표현’과 ‘의도’라는 점에서 단순이 반의성으로 설명하는 것은 불충분하며 의미적 특성 외에 화용적 특성을 고려해야 한다. 대화주의적 관점에서도 완서법은 다양한 발화적 특성을 보여준다. 감춰진 큰 의도보다 줄인 표현을 사용하여 상대방의 체면을 살려주고 배려함으로써 의사소통 상황을 부드럽게 하는 데 기여한다. 하지만 완화된 표현 뒤에 더 큰 의도가 숨어 있는 “거짓된 겸손”이라는 평가는 완서법의 메타언어적 사용을 통해서도 확인할 수 있다.

영어초록

The understatement, from the Greek word ‘litotes’ meaning ‘simplicity’, is a figure of thought which is presented in attenuated form. But simplicity is only an appearance behind which is hidden a greater intention on the part of the speaker. A figure that “says less to make more heard,” according to the dictionaries, is often manifested by “the negation of the opposite,” for example the phrase, “it is not stupid” would mean “it is intelligent” to have litotic value. Yet this litotic reading depends on the context and it is up to the addressee to interpret the intention of the speaker, considering the situation of enunciation, which is not always obvious. For the sake of successful communication, the speaker would use enunciative markers which direct the addressee towards reading litotics, despite the literal meaning. On the receiving side, he does not have to be a mere receiver, but he is encouraged to voluntarily participate in the interlocution as a co-enunciator for the “interpretative calculation” of the discrepancy between the utterance and the context. As an enunciative manner, litote is indeed a polyphonic form, since it shows several points of view, the responsibility of which is assumed by different enunciators. This figure of speech also shows different aspects of the dialogism: on the one hand, the reading of the words is accomplished in relation to the interlocution, which characterizes the interlocutive dialogism; on the other hand the intention of the speaker will finally be understood through the text and this is an intratextual dialogism.
