Response to Truth with Misunderstanding—Photography Semiotic Analysis on Christmas in August as a Melodrama This paper focused on Christmas in August which is representative melodrama film in South Korea. Melodrama is often devalued rather than treated as serious text of criticism. In general, some people criticize the melodrama it deals with the only micro-narrative but ignores the elements of grand-narrative. Indeed, the origin of melodrama was pointed to as 'a sentimentalism play' or 'a popular drama of emotional excess' which is created for the bourgeoisie at later eighteenth century right after the outbreak of French Revolution. As considering factors above, it is not just a wrong indication. One day, Kim Hyeon, who has denounced melodrama, defended value of novel as an art and asserted "truth is not revealed itself but revealed with hiding" against the sociologists who regard novel as just a reference data. According to him, melodrama which seems like avoiding talking about 'era' needs to be defended because it also contains 'revealed truth with hiding'. This paper pays attention to way of directing the 'uniformity of both extremities' from Christmas in August. To chase the logic of creation between both sides, I use semiology of A.J. Greimas for main methodology. Hereby, the purpose of this paper is revealing how Christmas in August leads each signs placed on axises of both poles to point of uniformity, such as 'August' and 'Christmas', Da-Rim and Jeong-Won, death and life, time limited life-memory and eternity-love, and misunderstanding and truth.
