대만 역사교과서를 통해 본 역사인물의 평가문제: 진시황과 한무제를 중심으로 (Evaluation of Historical Figures Examined in Taiwanese History Textbooks: Focusing on the Qinshihuang(秦始皇) and Hanwudi(漢武帝))

초록

역사연구와 역사교육의 지향점은 완전히 일치한다고 말하기 어렵다. 역사연구의 주요목적 중 하나는 진실을 찾는데 있다. 그리고 史實을 새롭게 구성하는 과정을 통해 역사발전의 법칙을 찾아내어 다가올 미래에 대한 거울로 삼기도 한다. 역사교육에서는 역사연구에 더하여 역사적 사실 중 함유된 ‘교육의 의의와 가치’에 주목한다. 즉 역사적 사실을 선택하고 그에 대한 是非論斷을 더하는 것이다.
역사인물의 평가와 그 평가에 대한 기준은 시대를 막론하고 중시되었다. 역사는 곧 인류과거활동의 기록이며, 역사인물은 역사발전을 추진하는 과정 중 중대한 영향을 주어 후세인들에게 귀감과 본보기가 된 인물을 지칭한다.
역사교육에 있어 역사적 인물에 대한 소개와 평가는 정확한 인식능력을 갖추지 못한 중고등학생들에게 큰 영향을 미칠 수 있다. 역사인물의 평가에 있어서는 그에 합당한 표준이 제시되어야 한다. 위대한 역사인물은 학생들에게 본보기가 되기 때문에 역사인물을 소개할 때는 반드시 그에 대한 도덕적 비판도 수반되어야 한다.
역사인물의 평가는 그 시대의 영향을 받는 경우도 허다하기 때문에 정확한 평가를 위해서는 마땅히 그 인물이 처했던 시대의 역사적 조건 또한 이해해야 함은 자명한 일이다. 비록 실패와 좌절을 겪은 인물이라 할지라도 당시 그가 처했던 역사적 조건을 고려하여 판단할 시, 오히려 높은 평가를 받게 되는 경우도 발생한다.
이처럼 역사인물의 평가에는 보는 것에 따라 그 생각을 달리하는 경우가 같지 않기에, 시대와 입장의 서로 다름으로 인하여 그 評論의 각도 또한 달라지기도 한다.
역사인물의 평가에 대한 문제의식에 기초하여, 이 글에서는 중국역사상 가장 중요한 역사인물로 평가받고 있는 ‘秦始皇’과 ‘漢武帝’ 두 인물에 대한 역사저작과 역사교과서의 평가문제에 대해 탐색해 보았다. 특히 대만의 중등역사교과서에 서술된 두 인물에 대한 내용을 중심으로 역사저술 속의 내용과 비교･분석하면서, 대만의 중등 역사교과서에 서술된 역사인물의 평가문제에 대한 기준과 시각을 살펴보았다.

영어초록

It is difficult to say that the aim of historical research and history education is completely consistent. One of the main goals of historical research is to find the facts. It also finds the law of historical development through the process of newly organizing historical facts, reflecting on them for the upcoming future. History education focuses on the 'significance and value of education' contained in historical facts in addition to historical research. In other words, it chooses historical facts and adds conclusions for right or wrong.
Evaluation of historical figures as well as standards for such evaluation have been valued regardless of time. History is a record of humanity's activities in the past, and historical figures refer to those who have become a paragon and model for future generations by exerting a significant influence on historical development.
Introducing and evaluating historical figures in history education may have a significant effect on middle and high school students who do not have precise cognitive skills. Evaluation of historical figures must be grounded on reasonable standards. Since great historical figures set an example for students, introduction of historical figures must always be accompanied by moral criticism.
In many cases, evaluation of a historical figure is influenced by the relevant era; thus, for accurate evaluation, it is necessary to understand the historical conditions of the era in which that figure lived. Even though the figure might have experienced failure and frustration, he or she may be rather highly regarded when judged in light of historical conditions at the time.
As such, there are different views of the same historical figure in evaluation depending on what is seen. Thus, the angle of criticism also varies according to the different eras and perspectives.
Based on such critical awareness of the evaluation of historical figures, this study explored the writings of history and evaluation of history textbooks regarding the two most important historical figures in Chinese history: ‘QinShiHuang(秦始皇)’ and ‘HanWuDi(漢武帝)’. In particular, this study examined the standards and perspectives of the evaluation of historical figures described in secondary school history textbooks in Taiwan by comparing and analyzing the contents of historical writings focused on the two figures in secondary school history textbooks in Taiwan.
