박동진 창작 판소리 <충무공 이순신>의 정서지향과 역사서사물로서의 의미 (The Emotional Orientation and Significance of Park Dong-jin’s Newly Created Pansori as a Historical Narrative)

초록

본고는 박동진 명창의 창작 판소리 <충무공 이순신>을 중심으로 판소리가 역사적 영웅을 어떻게 형상화하고 있는지를 살펴봄으로써, <충무공 이순신>의 역사서사물로서의 의미를 탐색하고자 하였다. 연행물로서 판소리는 독서물인 소설과는 차별화된 소통방식으로 수용자의 정서를 자극한다. 창자는 다양한 시점으로 서술자의 목소리를 내며 관객과 직접 의사소통을 한다. 그리고 이러한 메커니즘은 관객을 작품에 보다 근접하여 몰두하게 한다.
<충무공 이순신>에는 전승 5가와 마찬가지로 다양한 시점이 혼재되어 나타난다. 그리고 그 시점들은 정도의 차이는 있을지언정 어느 정도의 주관성을 띤 채서술된다. 따라서 관객은 창자의 입을 통해 나오는 소리의 주관성에 직접 영향을 받고 창자가 이끄는 정서에 보다 강하게 공감을 하게 된다. 아울러 제한된시간 내에 역사적 인물의 삶 전체를 조명해야 하기 때문에 서사의 시공간은 상당히 압축되어 나타난다. 인물의 28년 인생이 단 17분의 소리로 묘사되어야 하는 상황이 발생하는 것이다. 이에 따라 창자는 인물 생애의 중요한 국면에 장면을 집중하는데 그 장면 가운데에서도 특정 부분을 클로즈업 시켜 서술하는 방식을 택한다. 흔히 판소리의 장면의 극대화, 부분의 독자성이라고 일컬어지는 이러한 특징은 역사서사물을 그 재료로 택할 때 좀 더 전략적으로 이용된다. 관객은특정 장면에 더욱 몰입하여, ‘지금, 여기’의 공연 현장에서 ‘인물의 역사적 투쟁이 일어난 그 때, 그 곳’, 즉 특정 시공간으로 이동하는 경험을 하는 것이다. 인물의 체험을 관객 자신의 것으로 느끼는 추체험을 통해 정서의 감응과 감동은극대화가 된다. 박동진이 <충무공 이순신>을 창작하면서 전승 5가와 달리 골계미를 거세하고 비장미를 확대한 것도 역사 영웅의 이야기를 보다 진지하고 무게감 있게 표현함으로써 관객과 정서적 공감을 이루려 한 의도라고 파악할 수 있다.
다음으로 본고는 박동진의 <충무공 이순신>이 노산 이은상의 『태양이 비치는길로』와 춘원 이광수의 『이순신』에서 많은 영향을 받았다는 신문 기사의 내용을근거로 그 영향의 세부 내용을 살펴보았다. 이로써 박동진의 <충무공 이순신>은역사적 사실을 문학적 상상력으로 형상화하는 과정에서 상상력의 ‘표현’에 있어서는 춘원의 영향을 많이 받았지만, 특정 서사를 취사선택하여 그리고자 한 이순신 상에 있어서는 이은상의 영향을 많이 받았음을 확인하였다. 이은상은 박정희 정부의 대표적인 이데올로그로 그가 만들어 낸 이순신 상은 박정희 정부가추구한 이순신 상과 밀접한 관계를 맺고 있다. 박정희는 이순신을 통해 반공이데올로기를 첨예화하여 불안한 정국을 장악하고자 하였다. 멸사봉공을 통한 애국정신, 조국애, 민족애, 자주⋅자립⋅자위의 정신, 창의와 개척 정신, 유비무환의 정신, 정의에 사는 정신으로 이순신의 구체적인 정신을 만들어 대중에게 각인시키고자 하였다. 그리고 모든 대중이 이순신의 정신으로 무장되도록 끊임없이 강조하였다. 박동진의 <충무공 이순신>이 그리고 있는 이순신의 모습은 이에적확하게 부합되며 시대의 요청을 적극적으로 받아들였다.
판소리가 갖는 수용자에 대한 호소력과 정서의 감응이 박정희가 원하던 이순신의 대중화, 이순신 정신의 국민화가 보다 잘 이루어질 수 있는 한 방편으로기능하였던 것이다.

영어초록

This study explored the significance of <Chungmu-gong Yi Sun-shin> asa historical narrative by studying how the pansori is expressing thehistorical hero by focusing on the Newly Created Pansori <Chungmu-gongYi Sun-shin> by master pansori singer Park Dong-jin. Pansori as aperformance stimulates the emotion of consumers by differentiatedcommunication method from novel as a reading material. The singer ofpansori directly communicates with audience by singing the voices ofnarrators in variety of viewpoints and the audience gets closer to thepansori and becomes immersed in it by such mechanism.
Like the ‘jeonseung-5-ga’ (five passed-down pansori’s), multiple viewpointsare mixed in <Chungmu-gong Yi Sun-shin>, however, the viewpointsnarrate the story with certain extent of subjectivity though the extent ofsubjectivity is different from each other. Accordingly, audience gets directlyinfluenced by the subjectivity of the voice coming out of the singer’smouth and more strongly sympathize with the emotion led by the singer.In addition, since a performance should be done within limited time, thetemporal space of the narration is substantially compressed. For instance,28 years in a character’s life should be described within 17 minutes.
Accordingly, the singer concentrates on the scene of important situationand intensifies a moment out of that scene in narration. These characteristicsare commonly called as the ‘scene maximization of pansori’ and the‘independence of a part’ and they are utilized in more strategic way whena historical narrative is chosen as the material. Then the audience becomesmore immersed in specific scene and experiences a travel from theperformance site of ‘here and now’ to specific temporal space of ‘thatplace when the historical struggle of the character happened’. Thismaximizes the emotional sensing and charge by ‘enactment’ (追體驗),which is feeling the experience of a character as one’s own experience.
Pansori <Chungmu-gong Yi Sun-shin> is different from ‘jeonseung-5-ga’in removing the humoristic beauty and intensifying the tragic beauty and itis the intention to have the emotion of audience immersed in the pansoriby expressing the heroic tale in more serious and heavy way.
There was a newspaper article on Park Dong-jin’s <Chungmu-gong YiSun-shin> that it was heavily influenced by <Taeyangi bichineun gillo>(Toward the road with sunshine) of Nosan Yi Eun-sang and <Yi Sun-shin>of Yi Gwang-soo. This study explained the characteristics of narration inPark Dong-jin’s <Chungmu-gong Yi Sun-shin> by exploring the detailcontent of such impact in the newspaper article. Park Dong-jin’s<Chungmu-gong Yi Sun-shin> received substantial impact from ChunwonYi Gwang-soo in realizing the historical facts with literary imagination, inother words, in the ‘expression’ of literary imagination. On the other hand,Park Dong-jin’s <Chungmu-gong Yi Sun-shin> received heavy influencefrom Yi Eun-sang in describing the image of Yi Sun-shin by selectingspecific narration. Yi Eun-sang was a representative ideologue of ParkChung-hee administration and the image of Yi Sun-shin created by YiEun-sang has substantial relation with the image of Yi Sun-shin pursuedby Park Chung-hee administration. Park Chung-hee tried to control theunstable political situation by intensifying the anti-communism ideology.
He created detail spirits of Yi Sun-shin such as sacrificing personal interestfor country, patriotism, nationalism, the spirit of independence, selfstandingand self-defense, the spirit of creativity and pioneering, the spiritof preparing for hard time and the spirit of living by justice and imprintedthese spirits of Yi Sun-shin on people’s mind so that people would havesame spirit with Yi Sun-shin. The image of Yi Sun-shin described in ParkDong-jin’s <Chungmu-gong Yi Sun-shin> exactly meets the image of YiSun-shin created by Park Chung-hee and it implies that Park Dong-jinactively answered to the demand of the time.
In conclusion, the appealing power and the emotional sensing force ofpansori toward consumers functioned as a tool which facilitated thepopularization of Yi Sun-shin and nationalization of Yi Sun-shin spirit
