초록

Education constitutes a fundamental cornerstone of human civilization and serves as a cardinal vehicle for cultural inheritance and evolution. As the earliest formalized curricula in both Chinese and Western histories, China’s “six arts” education (ritual, music, archery, charioteering, calligraphy, and mathematics) and the Western “seven liberal arts” system (grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy) encapsulate the quintessential essence of Eastern and Western educational philosophies respectively. Conducting a comparative analysis of these two systems not only illuminates the profound disparities in educational concepts and methodologies between the two civilizations but also provides critical theoretical frameworks and practical insights. To achieve this research objective, the study addresses four key inquiries: first, the conceptual framework, developmental trajectory, historical transformations, and contemporary relevance of China’s “six arts” education; second, the theoretical underpinnings, evolutionary processes, historical contextualizations, and modern adaptations of the Western “seven liberal arts”; third, the shared characteristics and divergences between these two educational paradigms; and fourth, the implications and inspirations derived from this comparative study for contemporary Chinese education. By juxtaposing these two systems, the research endeavors to explore viable approaches for integrating traditional educational wisdom with modern pedagogical requirements, fostering comprehensively developed individuals capable of meeting the multifaceted demands of contemporary society. Moreover, the findings of this comparative analysis can offer valuable references for policymakers in formulating innovative educational strategies, thereby promoting the continuous enhancement and forward-thinking transformation of China’s educational infrastructure.
