포스트 서사극 연출기법 연구: 마리우스 폰 마이엔부르크 作 『못생긴 남자』를 중심으로 (A Study on Directorial Methods of Post-Epic theater: focused on Marius von Mayenburg’s 『The Ugly Man』)

초록

마리우스 폰 마이엔부르크(Marius von Mayenburg)의 『못생긴 남자』(The Ugly One)는 현대 신자본주의의 이미지 소비문화에서 야기된 개인의 자아정체성 상실 현 상을 테제로 삼은 포스트 서사극(Post-Epic Theater)이다. 포스트 서사극에는 포스 트드라마의 수행적 요소와 브레히트 서사극적 요소가 혼재되어 있다. 포스트 서사극 은 관객이 현존하는 배우를 지각하게하고 연극을 매개로 현실의 재인식을 촉구하여 관객 개개인의 다양한 정치적, 사회적 의미를 창발하게 만드는 것을 목표로 한다.
그러나 국내에 포스트 서사극적 관점에서 『못생긴 남자』 희곡을 이론적으로 분석 한 선행연구는 일부분 있으나 연출 접근방법에 대한 연구는 전무하다. 본고는 『못생긴 남자』에 나타나는 포스트 서사극적 특성을 파악하고, 이를 실제 프로덕션 과정을 통해 검증하여 효과적으로 포스트 서사극을 구현할 수 있는 연출 방법을 제시하고자 한다.
이를 위해, 먼저 포스트 서사극의 이론적 배경을 고찰한 후 『못생긴 남자』에 드러난 포스트 서사극적 특성을 세 가지 측면에서 분석할 것이다. 그것들은 ‘1) 파편화된 장면 구성을 통한 관객의 개입 유도’, ‘2) 몰입과 소외를 연쇄 작동시키는 수행적 역 할놀이’, ‘3) 감상적 정서와 비현실적 상황에 기반 한 이중적 소통전략’으로 관객과의 공동 현존을 목적으로 한다. 분석한 포스트 서사극적 특성을 바탕으로 ‘1. 육체 자본 개념에 기반 한 몸 이미지 구축’과 ‘2. 자본주의 사회의 욕망을 가시화하는 시뮬라크 르의 활용’이라는 이 작품의 연출개념을 도출해내었다.
이어서 포스트 서사극의 목적인 관객과 배우의 공동 현존을 통한 관객의 지각 변화 및 관객의 다양한 비판적 사유 유도를 위한 세 가지 연출기법의 실제에 관하여 논의 할 것이다. 관객의 의미창발을 유도하는 방법론으로 첫째, ‘신체 중심의 공통 게스투스 공유’, 둘째, ‘관객의 의미창발을 유도하는 시노그라피’, 셋째, ‘신체적 공동현존을 강화하는 배우의 움직임’을 제시, 그 효과를 검증하고자 하였다.
궁극적으로 본고의 목적은 포스트 서사극 연출 방법을 실제 프로덕션 과정을 통해 확인하여, 관객이 능동적 주체로서 의미창발에 도달하게 만들 수 있는 다양한 실제적 방법론을 모색하는 것이다.

영어초록

Marius von Mayenburg's "Ugly One" is a post-epic theater featuring individual loss of self-identity caused by the image consumption culture of modern neo-capitalism. Post-epic theater is a mixture of the performativ elements of post-drama and the Brechtian epic theater ones. Post-epic theater aims to make the audience be aware of present actors, call for re-recognition of reality through the medium of plays, and create their own various political and social meanings.
However, there are some prior studies in Korea that theoretically analyze the play "The Ugly Man" from a post-epic theatrical perspective, but there is no research on the directorial method based on practical production. This paper aims to identify the characteristics of post- epic theater shown in "The Ugly Man" and to demonstrate how to effectively implement the post- epic theater by verifying it through the actual production process.
To this end, I will first consider the theoretical background of the post-epic drama and then analyze the post-epic theater’s signature revealed in "The Ugly Man" in three aspects. The three aspects are the followings: 1)Inducing the audience's involvement through fragmented scene composition, 2)Performing role play that operates as a chain of immersion and alienation, 3)Dual communication strategy based on sentimental emotions and unrealistic situations are attempted to co-exist with the audience in terms of a dual strategy. Based on the analysis of post-epic theatrical feature, I drew a directing interpretation, 1)Building a body image based on the concept of physical capital, 2)Using simulacre to visualize the desire of capitalistic society.
I will then discuss the actuality of the three production techniques for changing the perception of the audience and inducing various critical reasons of them through co-existing the audience and actors, which is the purpose of the post-epic theater. With the methodology, firstly, 'common body-centered Gestus sharing', secondly, ‘Scenography that induces the creation of meaning for the audience’, and thirdly, ‘actress movement strengthening physical co-existence’ are presented to examine its effects.
Ultimately, the purpose of this paper is to identify the method of directing post-epic theater through the actual production process and to seek various practical methodologies that can encourage the audience to reach performative emergence.
