염상섭 초기소설의 창작기법 연구:『진주는 주엇스나』와 『햄릿』 비교를 중심으로 (A Study on Creative method of Sang-seop Yeom's Early Novel : Comparative Literary Study of Though Gave the Pearl and Hamlet)

초록

『묘지』와 『삼대』 사이의 염상섭 소설들은 다양한 형식상의 변이와 치열한 현실 인식을 내포하고 있지만 한편으로는 『묘지』와 『삼대』의 독보적인 문학사적 위상에 가려져 그 본령이 충분히 해명되지 못한 형편이다. 1925년부터 1926년까지 『동아일보』에 연재된 『진주는 주엇스나』 역시 예외는 아니다. 『진주는 주엇스나』는 서사구조나 인물의 성격에 있어서 익숙한 패턴을 보여주는데, 이러한 전형성은 『진주는 주엇스나』를 대중영합적인 신문연재소설이나 도식적인 멜로드라마로 평가하도록 만드는 근거로 작용한다. 그러나 작품의 결말 부분에서 나타나는 아이러니한 서술 태도는 『진주는 주엇스나』의 서사가 단지 익숙한 로맨스의 문법을 반복하고 있는 것이 아님을 드러낸다. 『진주는 주엇스나』의 서사구조와 인물유형은 염상섭이 일본 유학시절 문학에 관심을 갖기 시작하면서 접했던 셰익스피어의 『햄릿』과 매우 유사한 양상을 보이지만, 시공간적·비평적 거리에 의해 초문맥성을 확보함으로써 『햄릿』의 주제를 결정적으로 전도한다. 이러한 특성은 익숙한 문법을 반복하되 그것과의 비평적 거리를 유지함으로써 아이러니를 발생시키는 패러디의 문법과 일치한다. 특히 『진주는 주엇스나』의 『햄릿』 패러디에서 주목되는 것은 『햄릿』에서 타락한 왕권과 근친혼을 상징하는 ‘진주’가 『진주는 주엇스나』에서는 타락한 부권과 매매혼, 나아가서는 양자가 결부된 반민족적 자본주의의 상징으로 제시된다는 점이다. 또한 타락한 왕권과 근친혼을 상징하면서 동시에 그것을 징벌하는 기능을 했던 『햄릿』의 진주와는 달리 『진주는 주엇스나』의 진주는 작품의 제목이 암시하는 것처럼 단지 서사 내의 특정한 상징이나 기능을 담당하는 차원을 넘어서 작품을 둘러싼 컨텍스트 전체에 대한 비판적 거리로 표시된다. 요컨대 『진주는 주엇스나』는 1920년대 조선의 현실을 비판적으로 재현하려 했던 염상섭의 문제의식이 패러디라는 창작기법에 의해 그 본령을 얻은 작품이라 하겠다.

영어초록

Sang-seop Yeom's novels between Cemetery and Three Generations involve variousvariations of format and keen awareness of reality, but, on the other hand, the properfunction of the novels is not elucidated fully being hidden by matchless literary positionof Cemetery and Three Generations. Though Gave the Pearl which is published serially inDongA daily newspaper from 1925 to 1926 is also not an exception. Though Gavethe Pearl shows a familiar pattern of narrative structure and character's personality,and this stereotype makes the novel be evaluated as a populistic serial novel in anewspaper or a schematic melodrama. However, the ironic attitude on narration whichis appeared in the novel's ending part proves that the novel's narration does not repeatthe familiar rules of Romance. The narrative structure and the type of character inThough Gave the Pearl are very similar to those in Hamlet which Yeom Sang-seoplearned about when he started to be interested in literature while studying in Japan,but he decisively reverses the theme of Hamlet by retaining transcontextualization throughspatial-temporal and critical distance. That characteristic corresponds to the rules ofparody which generates irony by repeating the familiar rules but retaining critical distancefrom them. What is noticed especially in parody of Hamlet in Though Gave the Pearlis that 'pearl' in Though Gave the Pearl is presented as a symbol of corrupt paternity,purchasing marriage, and antinational capitalism which is combination of the two while 'pearl' in Hamlet is presented as a symbol of corrupt royal authority andintermarriage. Furthermore, contrary to the pearl in Hamlet which symbolizes corruptroyal authority and intermarriage, at the same time functions as punishment of them,the pearl in Though Gave the Pearl is indicated as critical distance from the whole contextwhich surrounds the work beyond just taking in charge of particular symbol or functionin the narration as a title of the work implies. To sum up, Though Gave the Pearlis the work in which Sang-seop Yeom's critical mind of representing the reality ofChosun in 1920s critically obtains the proper function by creative method, parody.
